Florida Circumcision Decision in the News

Heather Hironimus, a 31 year old West Palm Beach, Florida, mother was jailed for nine days for refusing to allow her four-year-old son to be circumcised, after agreeing to it in a parenting agreement made with her ex-partner, the boy's father. Courts have sided with the father. After she ignored a judge's order to appear in court and give her consent to the circumcision, she went missing until she was located May 14 at a Broward County shelter with her son.

Brought before a judge and again refusing to give consent for the surgery, she was jailed indefinitely. Eventually after the nine days imprisonment, she reconsidered and reluctantly agreed to sign, sobbing as she put pen to paper. The father has called circumcision "just the normal thing to do."'

Heather Hironimus has been portrayed as a martyr by anti-circumcision advocates around the country who have followed her case with rapt interest.

In court on Friday, the father's attorney said the surgery had not yet been scheduled, but the judge gave the father sole authority, temporarily, for the boy's medical decisions, and granted a motion to allow him to travel out-of-state to have the procedure completed.

Mary Hironimus, the woman's mother, said she and other so-called "intactivists" planned to reach out to doctors around the country to urge them not to perform the circumcision. Georganne Chapin, executive director of Intact America, which advocates against circumcision, said the images of the distraught Heather Hironimus signing the form to allow the surgery show how she was "bullied" into it and that she didn't truly give her consent.

4 years old is a little late to be doing a standard circumcision for other than religious reasons. So personally I don't understand either sides view in this issue and suspect it is being driven now by personal issues between the man and woman and is just being fueled by the activists.

Agree 100%--having said that---it is ridiculous for a mother to carry on about this as she doesn't even have a dick---and to carry on like being cut is the worse thing ever is really ridiculous.

Not sure how it is in Canada, but a substantial majority of American males are circumcised, not just "rednecks".

This could only happen in the USA; a court case to decide on removing a portion of a 4yr old boys penis. Even the fact of having signed an agreement with her partner seems strange to us Europeans.

Is it being done on religious grounds?

Normally "what's in the best interest of the child" overrules any ideas cooked up by the parents. It does not appear the court considered that.
