On my way to the hospital

On the up-side, I had 2 young student nurses give me my first shower there. I was seated on the 'port-a-potty' seat that fits over a toilet for people who aren't supposed to sit as low as the toilet seat (like me). The 'potty' is open, obviously, and I could almost hear the silent arguing to see which would get the privilege of washing my dangly bits.

Speaking of port-a-potties, the last bowel movement I had was last Sunday morning before 'The Fall'. Medications and all that other stuff prevented me from having another until yesterday (Saturday). After lots of 'over-night' laxatives and a horrible-tasting liquid, things finally loosened up on Saturday afternoon. My roommate there commented that he thought I was running a marathon. They let go as I was sitting on the port-a-potty, fortunately. I made it with time to spare.

I swear, I left enough in that toilet to supply a stool sample for every single patient in that hospital.

Purging is such a wonderful, cleansing experience.

(I didn't quite make it this afternoon. I should have set the walker to overdrive.)

The things people tell us when they're 'chasing the dragon'. . . even the synthetic dragons and the dragon's derivatives . . . :)

Glad to hear that you are home where you belong, Neil. Take your time resting up, now.

Best you hang out here when you're on line, though, as I doubt you'll be fit for mixed company for at least another week or two, when the 'opiates' wear off. ;)

Adopt and Adapt, BUTT ... Take it Slow, and Easy, for NOW, "Steve" (Austin)! ..|

You'll be UP, and Running, before You know it! (!)

Sounds like the Cloud of that Fall had Titanium Linings! \:/

Just more reasons to ... No Matter What ...

Keep Smilin', Buddy!! (*8*)

Necessity is the mother of invention - I'm glad you're figuring out ways to cope.

If the couch is low, don't forget the suggestions I gave you for Raising it a bit.

Neil, my friend, I am so glad that you are home and on the mend!
I have kept you in my thoughts.
Take gentle, small steps...no great leaps for a while! :D

Neil...
There really is no place like home. Glad you're back. By the nature of your posts, you sound terrific. I hope you are. (*8*)

After my abdominal procedure last year, I guess I was expecting too much. Just crawling from the foot of my bed was challenging, so I decided to just let nature take its course, reminding myself that "it gets better."

For anyone keeping track, I managed to bend my left leg slightly early this morning without having to lift it. That's a first. And two more firsts: I managed to slide my left leg off the bed TWICE without having to move it with my hands.

It's not much, but it's progress.

Get your ass up, go to your computer chair and your internet command station and start posting like in days of old. It will be therapeutic.

Another thread like "San Andreas" would lighten your spirits.

Some of us are keeping track. That's good progress.

Glad to hear it.

^ Calling 'foul' on that one. Sorry. Cute, but fake.

This, however, isn't:

Glad to see you posting regularly again Neil. The place was empty without you. Keep up updated on your progress and I wish you the best.

Progress update:

I've been walking with a walker since the day after my surgery last week, but that's simply a matter of moving the walker ahead of me, swinging my left (bad) leg forward slightly, bracing myself, and stepping forward with my right (good) leg. I've even been able to free-stand (with the walker very close at hand).

I've been doing various exercises to help my leg muscles mend for over a week now. Today, however, I decided to try something on my own. As I was standing with the walker, I decided to see if I could actually lift my left foot off the floor.

I did. First time since the surgery. So I put it back on the floor and lifted it again, then again, and again, and again.

Five times.

I think I have a new daily exercise.

My mom is breaking in hip #5 (false hip #3; she's had the right side replaced for the 2nd time) at present. It's a bitch, but I'm sure you'll get there. The critical part is to keep up with the exercises. They may not seem like much on paper, but the amount of effort you're putting in is working more than just the leg and hip area. And you'll notice it if you miss them for a couple of days in a row.

And hopefully you're less cranky about it than she is... ;) love you, ma.

I'm finding that a few of the exercises are to regain the strength in the muscles which were cut during surgery and a few are for the untouched leg muscles which have had to take over for the damaged ones. Surprisingly, it's the undamaged muscles behind the knee which hurt the most.

Could it be that those muscles might be getting the most benefit of exercise?

I don't know. Maybe Kara or another expert can weight in.

Our bodies are Amazing things! Keep in mind that YOU are one of the most Sophisticated "Machines" on The Planet! (!) (!w!)

SO ... Now you have some "synthetically engineered" bits. ..|

Keep up the good work/exercising, and in nearly NO Time at all, everything will be back in sync, perhaps even better than before! \:/ (group)

Neil,
Great to see your update - I know you're continuing to push yourself and trying to do more day by day - that's great.

Maybe you'll be up for a 5K walk/run (walk, in your case) around Victoria Day.
;)
