On my way to the hospital

Final update

I just got back from paying a visit to my surgeon who replaced my hip last January. X-rays were taken and discussed with me. It was the first time I had seen the replacement except from a distance. Anyway, he explained what had been done (but not how, thankfully). It was the first time I had heard that the socket had been replaced as well. At my age, it makes things fit and mend better.

I mentioned that the swelling had gone down and that the tissue was much softer. He examined it and was pleased with the result. He told me that the swelling should continue to go down over time until it wouldn't be visible anymore. Finally, he had me stand and walk across the room to the door without my cane. I did so easily enough and he told me that I didn't need to use the cane anymore unless I need it for balance. I assured him that I needed it, but rarely, if ever, for support.

He asked about any pain and I told him that it begins to hurt if I walk too far or if I stand too long, such as when I cooked Thanksgiving dinner.

He's cleared me for the future and, unless something happens down the road, that was my final visit with him.

The journey continues. Thank you Dr. P. You did good.

I have followed you in this though I don't recall having posted, I am so glad that you have done well, please be careful as the ice appears, ..|

^ I've got my trusty YakTrax ready to be installed on my shoes. They should keep me upright, and I certainly won't intentionally be going out looking for ice to walk on. ;)

I just bought a set of ice grips for my shoes. They have a 9 out of 10 satisfaction rating.

They cost me $40, but I feel safer about winter already.

I'm glad you're doing much much better. Hopefully, this winter will be kinder to you (*8*)

^ Well, look at the bright side. If I break my right hip this winter, I'll have a matching pair which some future archaeologist can turn into a set of bookends when he digs me up.

gsdx, did you know you can take "fall training?"

It's especially important for people who have had mobility issues, because if you slip and know how to do it right, you can save yourself a lot of grief by going to the ground safely, and potentially even add years of independent mobility by avoiding a worse injury. I'd be all over my health authority to find out what's available...

^ I've fallen several times over the past few years, but always flat on my back. When I broke my hip, I was walking sideways pulling my utility cart with my right hand, my left foot leading. My foot found the ice and slid to the right, knocking my right foot out from under me and down I went, right onto my hip. Nothing could have been done to fall safely in that instance, no matter how many classes I had taken.

Maybe you can get a Commonwealth transfer to NZ or AUS for the Winter!

^ I'd probably go to England. I think winter in the Cotswolds would be incredible. Cozying up in a thatched cottage, curled up in a big lounge chair in front of a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, sipping a mug of hot chocolate and munching on oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips...

I was trying for maximum heat therapy for you - you'd be quite toasty in 30C sunshine on the sandy beaches, some shrimps on the barby and marmalite at the ready, maybe some roo steaks, too.

I'm relieved that episode is behind you (mostly), Neil. I think, though, that you should have sprung for an anti-gravity belt. I know I should have.

Dammit! I'm in bed with a cold and trying to rest. NOW I have to get up to make cookies. I hope you're happy.

lol! I just checked the grocery cupboard after reading your reply and I am so out of ingredients....

Neil,
I had to read that a few times - I was seeing FF, but my mind was seeing BB and wondering what the hell in these comments brought that on!

Must be the general forum and my tiredness.

That, or those were especially good cookies.

We have home made brownies - one pan with nuts, one pan without.

I'll share . . .

Hey, it's been ages since I have been back on Jub. I hope you're much better in 2020.
