Ouija Board--Real or Fake?

Just as an aside, a theory is not the same thing as a best guess. Another word for theory is "explanation."

Facts are established through observation, investigation, measurement, and verification. A theory explains how the facts relate, or how they don't relate.

Theory should never be mistaken for "filling in the blanks with something we don't know."

Ugh, I've always been terrified of using them. Even though I don't believe in this shit, my mom used to tell this scary story that the Ouija Bored would not leave, and every time they threw it away it would appear back in the closet. She also said that each one was "blessed" by Satan.

1) Scary for a little kid to hear
2) My mom is totally crazy

IT is ignorant to completely believe in silly board games as gateways to demonic realms.

IT is also ignorant to tell people not to play said games because you believe hocus pocus mumbo jumbo.

IT is also ignorant to compare metaphysic mumbo jumbo to actual scientific applications since theories are based on multiple testing of varying degrees of certain factors that can not as of yet be applied to something as innocuous as a game...especially since most of the hearsay involved in the game is based on weak willed people believing on faith alone or the FACT that it was mainly used as a scam device back in the day.

I can't believe NONE of you see how silly you all sound...

If I told you not to go into the backyard of your house because Bigfoot was there would you never step outside to the backyard again?

If I told you not to go swimming in a lake because the Loch Ness Monster was there would you not go swimming there again?

If I told you gay sex was going to send you straight to hell would you stop having gay sex?

The answer is probably No... yet this game is exactly like those things.

You want to believe in this GAME so badly that you all refuse to accept that it is indeed just a game and that you have been duped by hysteria and mumbo jumbo.

There is nothing logical about a piece of plastic being a gateway into the unknown... Only an illogical mind would think something so illogical.

I agree, but some folks can only learn that for themselves.

They've been warned by a number of posts, what else can you do?

I completely agree with this statement ... unfortunately like P.T. Barnum once said "There's a sucker born every minute." And most people don't like to think they have been suckered so they create imaginary things to justify it as to not have to admit to being suckered into believing a charlatans accessory is nothing more than a piece of plastic directed by a huckster.

What's beyond my comprehension is how so many people can sit here and spew this inane babble about a simple toy...

A toy I have played NUMEROUS times at parties and everyone of us had a few good laughs out of and then put it away. No harm done to anyone...

WHY?

Because someone in the group was the one pushing the planchette and we had a blast playing as with any and every other game we/I have ever played.

The Ouija board is about as dangerous as Connect 4... Anyone who believes otherwise is only fooling themselves.

I will say this; they're very, very beautiful things indeed. I'd like a properly produced Ouija board for decorational purposes :)

The Ouija board is not a game.

Then why can you buy it in the toy department of Walmart*?

Or online, even:

Read it's history. It's probably not what you think it is, and it's certainly not as old as you may think it is:

It is what people make of it but, in essence, it is nothing more than a board game, just like the Magic 8 Ball:

Considering that most stores do not have an "Occult" department and that Parker Brothers market the Ouija board as a toy, retailers think categorizing it with toys is okay. It's not.

How can anyone seriously hand a Ouija board to a bunch of kids so they can summon dead Grandpa Joe or an unknown entity?

There are things in this world that should NOT be played with as a toy and this is one of them.

The thing that mystifies me is that IT IS A TOY... Did you even watch the Penn & Teller Bullshit episode that was posted on the first page where they significantly debunk the complete hooey surrounding the "phenomenon" behind this?

If you buy into the hogwash concerning this as an "occult" tool used to summon the dead .. then fine...believe what you want... But the fact is that it is a TOY... If it wasn't and there was any truth behind it at all instead of a few easily duped people believing otherwise ... It wouldn't be so mass produced and placed on shelves at a toy store.

On a side note... Since apparently you can not do it blindfolded because you have to have the "spirit" see through your eyes... If I were to summon my friends grandfather... would he be able to communicate through the board... since he doesn't know any English at all and only spoke and read Korean? Or would we have to use a Korean board with a Korean medium?

After all... this TOY is marketed so that ANYONE can use it...

The irony of this is that I'll bet that everyone who is adamantly defending this game and their beliefs in said game, which can not be proven to be real at all, only their own minds making them THINK it's all real... are probably the same ones to shout down radical religious zealots on their common misconceptions regarding homosexuality and it being a sin/choice/lifestyle etc.

I did the search for the history of the game. I presented it to you to save you the trouble of doing the search yourself.

That you refuse to even consider the history speaks volumes.

I'm amazed at the utter mental retardation in this thread. Honestly, how can people believe in this shit?

I wouldn't go as far as saying anything as nasty as that. Or does one really have to be so inflicted to believe in something that you don't believe in?

You've got 3 posts under your belt. Far too early to begin tossing around insults.

Many posters on this thread don't seem to think that there's anything to ouija boards. My mind is rooted in science and logic but I still am open to the possibilities. My opinion is that something seeems to be going on. All I can do is relate my experiences with the ouija board.
This all happened back in the nineties. The people using it were myself, my mother, her friend (female) and a friend of the family (male). An entity came and called itself 'Bo'. It claimed to be from hell and was obsessed with my mother. It claimed it could control people. She said prove it and shortly after she began dating this man. He paid some of her bills and he did things for her. He couldn't explain why he did it. As time went on, Bo became more hateful, using foul language (for a while, I thought Bo might actually out me but that didn't happen) and at one point we believe he was trying to take physical shape. My mother and her friend were alone with the board. This was told to me later. My mother was in a trance and a foul odor was filling the room. Her friend screamed and threw the board down. That broke the spell, also scaring our cat silly in the process.
After that, my mother soon got rid of the board. When that happened , her bf broke up with her. BTW, she told him about the board. He didn't believe it until he watched the board spell out things to me and my mother that he hadn't told us. He actually went to a nearby university and asked their psychology department about it. Some months later, we got a new board. Yeah, I know. I have a mind that likes to investigate things. Anyway, Bo was eager to come back. By this time, her bf had moved to a new house and had an unlisted number. My mother asked to get in touch with him and Bo spelled out a series of numbers. Guess what! It was her bf's new phone number.
By this time, I was doing research. Apparently, you should use protection before and after using the ouija. I started doing a thing called the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram. And to this day, the board is pretty much 'dead'. I can't make it move anymore.
Scientific evidence? What are the odds about the phone number? My mother was lucky or psychic? I don't know but something was happening. ALso, the ritual I did seemed to clear it out. A part of me wants to try it and see what happens. But always try to ask for positive spirits and call upon the white light. Yeah, I know that makes me sound like a silly goose. However, I'm open to the possibilites.

And gsdx, I'm so spooked out by Ouija boards that I'd prefer NOT to visit any Ouija specifc websites.

If there is something about the history you'd like to share, then please do.

They aren't 'Ouija-specific' any more than a website which offers recipes for marzipan. They neither condemn nor condone the board. They simply offer the history.

Here it is according to Wiki (which I was hesitant to post because of its nature). The article is basically a regurgitation of what you would find in the other links I posted but in much less detail:

During the late 1800s, planchettes were widely sold as a novelty. The businessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard had the idea to patent a planchette sold with a board on which the alphabet was printed. The patentees filed on May 28, 1890 for patent protection and thus had invented the first Ouija board. Issue date on the patent was February 10, 1891. They received U.S. Patent 446,054. Bond was an attorney and was an inventor of other objects in addition to this device. An employee of Kennard, William Fuld took over the talking board production and in 1901, he started production of his own boards under the name "Ouija".[3] The Fuld name would become synonymous with the Ouija board, as Fuld reinvented its history, claiming that he himself had invented it. The strange talk about the boards from Fuld's competitors flooded the market and all these boards enjoyed a heyday from the 1920s through the 1960s. Fuld sued many companies over the "Ouija" name and concept right up until his death in 1927. In 1966, Fuld's estate sold the entire business to Parker Brothers, who continues to hold all trademarks and patents. About ten brands of talking boards are sold today under various names.[3]

By the way, I have had experience over my lifetime with Ouija boards, and some of those experiences cannot be explained. I'm not condemning anyone in their beliefs in the board. I am merely trying to 'keep them grounded' as it were by reminding them that it really is nothing more than a game intended for entertainment only.

And for comparison gsdx, how many "experiences" have you had with Monopoly and Scrabble?

There is no talking to you, is there? You get a 'hate on' for someone and it blurs everything you read from them.

Yes, I have encountered 'unexplainable experiences' with Ouija, but none which would cause me undue concern. If you believe them to be evil, your experiences will be evil. If you think they are benevolent, they your experiences will be benevolent. Or, you may be a complete skeptic and nothing will happen, no matter what you do.

And, if you must know, my 'unexplained experiences' involved a Ouija board and a chess board. Who knew the spirits know how to play chess?
