Political cartoon racist?

I'm officially banning the term "political correct."

It's terribly misused and has become a cheap deflection tool, completely void of context and often times simple logic. It's the new "nazi comparison." A quick TKO to a conversation is to call someone "PC" stripping them of credibility no matter how much sense they make.

You're a special kind of fake to pretend that there's absolutely zero possibility for this to have been done in mal intent. "Oh black people? Monkeys? I'm sorry, I've never heard of that. I don't see the connection."

Then you either slept through the entire month of February in high-school history or you're exceptionally dense and culturally deficient.

..| While you're at it ban "racist" too. That word is used in the same manner by some.

God you're so right. I'm sick of people saying to me "You're just gonna call me racist aren't you?" "You think I'm racist don't you?" If I used the word as much as people predict I'm gonna use it you'd think I had a 2nd grade vocabulary. The irony is.....nevermind.

"Hates black people" or "Thinks poorly of minorities" are so much more efficient since people usually associate "racism" with burning crosses and church explosions. Their failure to comprehend the meaning of the word and strip it of extreme associations makes the use futile as racism is much more nuanced.

Good suggestion.

Obama's baby or not, the pelosi pork package is not his bill, it's purely a result of the efforts of Pelosi, Reid, and others.

Here's the first thing you'll hear from Republicans if the stimulus bill doesn't work:

"OBAMA'S BILL WAS A MASSIVE FAILURE!!!"

You can stop now, Hank. We got you guys' number years ago.
Shouting out Pelosi and Reed is just more spin.
And let's be honest, the stimulus package that passed certainly doesn't resemble much of what Pelosi et al wrote. Under the whining opposition it went from $1 trillion to just under $800 billion, which economists say is not enough to stimulate the economy.

"As far as race pimps like Sharpton and Jackson are concerned everything is about race."

People say the same thing about Ellen Degeneress and Rosie O'Donell when they use their celebrity status to stand up for Gays...

If you're Black you shouldnt have to take racist SHIT..If you're Gay you shouldnt have to take discriminatory SHIT...If a Famous face can stand and represent your community then so be it...

Black activists like Sharpton and Jackson NEVER burned any crosses in anyones yard or did any hangings...They have EVERY right to March & Protest peacefully for any cause just like Gay activists...

This is STILL America folks....

Yeah and I could do research on Rosie and Ellen and probably everybody on JUB and I'll find SOMETHING I won't like..

We're not living in a PERFECT world where people havent made mistakes in their past...

I support any man's right to Protest peacfully..I could care less if he stole a bag of M&M's when he was 5yrs old...

Is it racist? dunno maybe, maybe not. It's ambiguous.

Should it matter this much? No.

The NYT is stating facts, not opinions. If you don't care for the source, check the police and court records. They say the same thing.

Well you would have to check the official records. We all know the Old Grey Whore to be an unreliable source.

you're reaching........its pointless debating this thread.....because yes you technically are right....but perception is reality...and most americans see it as obamas baby

and on another note....are some posters serious about people (who called bush a monkey) racist.....this forum is becoming a joke

Excellent point Marley. Whenever people don't want to here a crticial viewpoint they try to dismiss it as "PC." Like of the way they used to call people "bleeding heart liberals" for showing any kind of social consicence.

It isn't necessary to call someone out as "PC" to strip them of credibility, they do it to themselves by being so intellectually dishonest that they cannot say what they really mean and try to pretty it up instead.

a not that funny cartoon IMO

is all

the idea that a monkey (aka stupid) created this package

is not that funny

but i don't default to it's racist

and al sharpton of tawana brawley fame has zero cred

chance1, my friend, I don't default to it's being racist either. I look at it, and I can SEE that it's racist. It's an evaluation. The Post's "explanation" is what they came up with as an excuse, but if you look at the cartoon and don't see the racism...well, I honestly don't see how an intelligent, knowledgeable person can look at that and not see it, so it confuses me that you don't.

Sharpton was fooled by Tawana Brawley, as were many others. And that happened 21 years ago. Al Sharpton annoys me, but I don't think it makes sense to bring that up here. It's a matter of judgement, not a matter of facts that someone alleges. This one is perfect information: we look at the cartoon and can judge for ourselves.

.

That's not an evaluation - that's a knee-jerk reaction, so typical of people with chips on their shoulders.

An intelligent, knowledgeable person would see it for what it is - a political cartoon. Period.

What chip do you think I have on my shoulder, just out of curiosity?

Perhaps the "I'm looking to be offended" chip. Others come to mind, none of them flattering.

You looked at the cartoon and saw precisely what you were looking for.

Check out the history of political cartoons going back 130 years or so. This was pretty tame by comparison.

By comparison to the cartoons during the peak of racist oppression, yeah. Of course. But in theory we've progressed since then.

Do you really idealize the way things were circa 1879? If you don't think society should have progressed since then, there's little or no point in having a conversation.

By today's more racially-sensitive standards, that cartoon is an outrage. The Post attempted to find a rationale to give them wiggle-room, but while people can spout it, I don't think anyone actually believes them.

*sigh* There is no double standard here. For centuries, essentialist arguments about the inherent inferiority of black people have relied on what's now known as the "Negro-ape metaphor" in order to justify the inherent superiority of the white race. There is a long historical precedent for the argument that depictions of black people as apes is racist in intent. There is no such historical precedent for representations of white people as apes.

BearDaddy, you said in your other thread that we're suipposed to be color-blind. While it would be nice if race truly made no difference in the way people treated each other, the fact of the matter is that we do NOT live in a color-blind society, and we cannot ignore history.

Racially-sensitive standards are in and of themselves an outrage. And insulting to the intleligence.

ANY intelligent, educated, and enlightened person OUGHT to be able to laugh at anything.

i guess my point is to ASSUME and judge that it's racist is convenient and lazy

when i saw it i thought "uh oh" as in i know there will be a shitstorm here

u say sharpton was fooled - i say if so then he wanted very much to BE fooled - because it served his agenda - worst is that after it was proven that she was lying he did not apologize - and he has never made amends with the the accused

he is a charlatan plain and simple who pounces on opportunities to cry injustice no matter what the facts are

his mere existence/verbosity here makes me cringe

Didn't slimy al also incite a riot over what turned out to be a non-existent problem at a store or cleaners - a riot during which people died? He never apologized for that, either.

He is a slimy sob. Can't understand why he gets so much face time on the news - even on Fox. At least, I assume he still does - haven't watched tv for more than a year, now.
