Someone should do a similar meme reminding everyone that after being tortured in a POW camp during Vietnam, a little pressure from politicians didn't phase him. McCain didn't capitulate to political pressure from anyone. Contrast that to modern day Republicans who cower and say, "But they might primary me!".

For stainless I stopped buying Calphaon years ago and went with All Clad. They are supposedly American made - not the reason I bought the first one, but who knows these days, that could just mean they were assembled here I suppose.

As somewhat of a libertarian I don't understand why there need to be talks for free trade: free trade means you can sell any of your stuff to us and we can sell any of our stuff to you. It should rally be called the "Sort of Free Trade but Not Really" Act.

Free Trade was always a sham Free Trade was supposed to demolish tariffs and allow the corporations to shift manufacturing to lowest cost zones with penalty. The US and Canada used to have a full slate of tariffs in place until Mulroney and Reagan decided to help the corporations pull off the largest betrayal of workers in North America.

So what actually happened was that all the big players immediately shifted their plants down to southern states and then into Mexico to get really cheap labour and Canada became a raw resources and service economy. So to a great extent did the rust belt and great lake states that had lower productivity and higher production costs because...winter.

And then the corporations shifted it all offshore....hahaha on the US, Canada and Mexico (to some extent)

Even the auto pact didn't prevent the big three from gutting their Canadian plants which is why we shifted to Honda because they opened a major plant in Ontario.

Full disclosure...my investment guy finally got me to dump my Ford stock this year because he doesn't see an upside to the company any more.

But Trump now, not satisfied with NAFTA 2.0 because the US is running a trade deficit with Canada and Mexico is going to break the covenant made in his first term....and even under NAFTA, Canada was endlessly hammered with trade disputes over lumber...so most of us in Canada have always regarded NAFTA 1.0 and NAFTA 2.0 as unmitigated disasters for our economy. The problem now is that the damage is now almost irreparable to industry.

Even steel, which used to be represented by strong players was gradually all bought up by US Steel who then recently almost sold off to Nippon. So what happens now? Will US Steel just let it drift into bankruptcy?

Waiting to hear what comes of this. So far denials by parties that they are meeting with Trump Jr. The idea of the US 'purchasing' Greenland is absurd. Even the US couldn't float that kind of loan without collapsing its currency. The only way that Greenland will become US territory is by seizure...and we fully expect that they will and then tell Norway to go fuck themselves in the face.

I don't know. Think of all the Congressional representatives and electoral votes the state of Canada could have. Maybe each province can be a state and we can have 60 states! Wouldn't that be fun! Maybe you would have enough votes to take control. You should consider it.

It's a good point. Since US House representation is apportioned by population and the number of seats is fixed, this would mean that Québec alone would reduce most of the dead-end US States to 1 representative.

The population of Québec is 9 million people. The population of the two Dakotas (why do we have 2 Dakotas?) is less than 2 million.

Meanwhile, NPR reminds us that "one of these things is not like the other".
