Political Cartoons, Memes & Amusing Videos

It's both.

This is an example of how we sometimes don't see the forest because of the trees.

The trees are the need to hire protection for schools and awards shows.

The forest is, "Why did we allow our society to get to the point that we have to be afraid when attending school or attending an awards show?".

Ah, for the good old days when we were afraid of Islamic terrorism. Now, we have to fear each other... and it's because so many of us have guns and are mentally ill.

Speaking of guns....where are the lies? We face the same problem in Canada from smuggled US guns.

I wonder what Hillary is thinking these days? The walls were closing in, remember?

It wasn't a shining moment for Margaret Brennan. She shot out an accusation at Rubio, then was left flat-footed when he returned fire.

I'm no Rebublican supporter, but when reporters engage in debate rather than interview and let the viewer form impressions, they lose.

OK, that's an explaination. I was more thinking about poor photoshoping, but anyway, I don't think hairspray is allowed in prison, which rules out the comical combover.

The difference is that we don't send our children to the Oscars.

So the people at the Oscars deserve greater protection?
The solution is to incarcerate the criminally mentally ill, provide care to the ones who can be helped

Which won't take effect for a good dozen years.
the cause is the arrogance of self and entitlement. We raise ravenous wolves of greed and lust and hate, and are then shocked when they don't become lap dogs.

And selfishness that leaves kids feeling abandoned in their own homes and hated in their schools.
It's something I can't really grasp since where I grew up if kids were being treated poorly at home the churches would step in and if kids were being bullied the lettermen's club stepped in (they reserved the right to monitor and regulate all bullying).

It's both.

One big part is that prosecutors bargain away gun crime charges more often than they pursue them; that should be illegal under federal law for the simple reason that the purpose of guaranteeing that the militia (i.e. the citizenry) can be armed is for the security/protection of a free state, not to harm others. I'd make it a federal offense to even offer to drop gun crime charges.
Another is that Congress refuses to use its authority to "discipline" the militia, which under the meaning at the time includes specifying how arms are stored, both to keep them in good shape and to keep them safe from those who would misuse them. That could be tricky to balance with the Second Amendment, but the authority is right there in Article I, Section 8, clause 16.

Or to call for trained volunteers. Back in the day, protecting schools (if they'd had public schools) would have been a function of the local militia. The NRA regularly calls for armed protection at schools, so call on them to provide trained volunteers [once I would have said they had the money for it, but their idiotic legal team dragged them into lawsuits and billed at $1k+ per hour, with thousands of hours billed].
The forest is, "Why did we allow our society to get to the point that we have to be afraid when attending school or attending an awards show?".

Or a concert, or a movie . . .
Part of it is that churches no longer have the influence they once did. I remember as a kid when some teenager was acting out their pastor telling the parents to lock up all lethal items, a term that included kitchen knives. Another part is that guns have become a fantasy item because far fewer people are properly trained with them as kids plus because so many movies turn killers into heroes. A more minor aspect is that certain "gun control" laws have actually made it easier for criminals to steal guns (talk about unintended consequences!).
None of those elements were on purpose, so the "why" can be boiled down to unintended consequences of societal changes.
Now, we have to fear each other... and it's because so many of us have guns and are mentally ill.

Thank you, Ronnie "Raygun" Reagan, for dumping the mentally ill on the streets.

Not many NRA members agree with me, but I maintain that a national community-based mental health system can be construed as authorized by the militia clauses under Article I on the grounds that not caring for the mentally ill impairs the "well-regulated" aspect of the militia that the Second Amendment cites as partial justification for the right to keep and bear arms being protected: while most mentally ill folks are just fine having guns, a large enough minority aren't that offering services to all mentally ill would benefit the militia as well as serving what the first clause of the Second Amendment states as a reason for guarding the right, specifically improving "the security of a free state" (it "begins at home").

But the Republicans at the moment would rather saddle the rest of us in greater debt by cutting taxes to enrich the dwindling portion of the people who are already in control of four-fifths of the republic's wealth than actually engage in protecting the republic.
