So there will likely be severe consequnces for pregant women who may be exposed...but it this were chickenpox...all the kids who weren't vaccinated becuase of some stupid reason their parents didn't beleive in it should one day launch a suit when they get shingles against their parents and the state for failure to provide adequate protection for them when it was available.

Funny, how even after Salk, we are back to 1950's thinking.

Rubella (which is also in the MMR vaccine that these kids didn't get) is the most dangerous for pregnant women and the fetus- causing miscarriage and birth defects, including congenital deafness in children.

Measles also puts pregnant women at risk, causing miscarriage, stillbirth, low infant birth weight and developmental delays.

Ironic for a State so obsessed with abortion; they're willing to put fetuses at risk with measles and instead want to focus on outlawing elective abortions. And the irony of "religious exemptions" for bypassing immunization requirements for public school attendance... and a SCOTUS that is bent on reinterpreting "freedom of religion" as being more important that societal good.

Miami-Dade and Broward County are ticking time bombs because of the high number of undocumented immigrants from impoverished countries. The measles vaccination rates for Cubans is good- > 90% of Cuban children get vaccinated and because of the "wet foot" legal immigration pathways, they are evaluated for immunization compliance when they immigrate to the US.

Haiti and Venezuela don't have as good of a immunization record because of their failing health systems; their rates were in the 70% range before the latest political instabilities in those countries.

Legal immigration comes with requirements for proof of vaccination for residency. Unfortunately, illegal immigration often means that adult and children migrants may not get the immunizations that would be mandated if they had the opportunity to be processed via legal pathways.

I recall in the 1980s some authority saying that measles was no longer a concern, that it was nearly eradicated.

These fundy religionists believe God is going to send plagues on the earth -- but with them refusing to get their kids vaccinated, God won't have to, they're taking care of it by themselves.

Which may mean that there is a method to the madness.

The MMR immunization confers long-term immunity, in many cases, lifetime immunity. It's also one of the most effective immunization- it prevents about 95% of infections.

Public health people in the 90s were taught that measles was a "third world country" disease because the US had mandated MMR immunization as a prerequisite for starting public school.

Then came the "home school" movement. Then came the religious exemptions for groups like the ultraorthodox Jews. Then came the anti-vaxxers with their non-scientific justifications.

Now we have a governor of one of the largest States who enabled the anti-science crowd because he saw it as his path to being President.

Which may mean that there is a method to the madness.
Except that the children born with low birth weight and deficits are American citizens eligible for Medicaid.

Guys like Ladapo are a mystery- MD, PhD from Harvard and looks good on paper. Unfortunately, I've worked with a few MD, PhDs and they tend to be lab researchers who don't have good bedside manner. This seems the case with Ladapo- he was an academic researcher in his previous positions and did not directly treat patients.

Add "medical choice" to the "school choice" bullshit being shoveled by the evangelical far right.
