No, we remember that Germans needed to see Berlin in heaps before ACCEPTING that their fascist imperialism had failed, just as the Japanese did. They had no problem with authoritarianism, and nationalism wasn't then expunged from European psyches. Both nations were filled with citizens who were fine with dominating their neighbors just as Britain had.
Germans didn't view themselves as victimized. They owned their role in reacting against the hardships of the Treaty of Versailles. If anything, they'd blame the Kaiser or just the oligarchs that triggered WWI.
The still identify by nationality, and the E.U. is a cooperative instrument, not an identity of culture.
To be clear, American MAGATs are not children being deceived by populists. They are consituents who have very different priorities for government than previous citizens had. They don't value equality, equity, diversity, freedom of speech, separation of church and state, international relations, truth, public safety, science, civility, the rule of law, humility, or higher education.
As a block, they value government that enables their vices, vehicles that make power statements as proxies for big dicks, weapons as imagined protection from crime, schools that ascribe to Judeo-Christian lore but don't push their children to perform, the silencing of those who insist on constantly interjecting minority priorities about race and fringe sexualitty, unfiltered incivility as "revenge" for PC muting of speech, and vast inequity as long as they believe they have a chance to become one of the rich.
But that doesn't make them any more or less gullible than any other electorate only focused on a few promises from the leaders. Hard left voters have been plentty disappointed with Obamacare's thin veneer, the failure to move to alternative energy, and the substitution of abortion for any real gains for the country while merrily stitll overfunding warmongering, corporate greed, and bailouts for every corrupt sector of the economy (medical, housing, transportation, etc.) The Democrats have fiddled while the nation has burned, and throwing out a few scraps while business as usual goes on isn't that much better than Trump's naked aggressions.
The two-party system is at fault. Americans know this. Not sure about farther north.
