That's what one of my whitewater kayaking instructors always says as you approach something dangerous.

You don't have time to dawdle as you're approaching the rapids or the waterfall. You can't just not paddle and go with the flow, because the water is rough and you'll flip over. You must actively paddle forward or you are toast!

It's a great metaphor for the tough times in your life.

It's helped me a lot lately.
 
- The more people try to tear you down, the more successful you've become.

- Stand up for yourself. Nobody else is going to do it.

- Nobody else is going to do your looking back with regret for you.. so live on your own terms.

- It's better to regret the thigns you HAVE done than to regret the things you HAVEN'T.

- Allowing other people who bother you when they're obviously just trying to bother you lets them win. Cut that out.

- Tell the truth now. Lies just make you look stupid.

- Pain now. Joy later.

- Sell your stuff. Collecting things like comic books, CDs, dolls, toys, buttons or tea cups is a waste of time, a waste of money and a waste of space. more than that, things just drag you don't and don't create life. They dont' allow you to move forward.

- obsession with a movie star or pop star or celebrity is a form of personal weakness.

- The closet is a lonely place to live. It's an even worse place to die.

Poor is the man, whose pleasures depend upon the permission of the others.

I have learned not to possess anything. I merely see myself as a steward, endowed with fruits of his work, to dispose as he finds fit, while knowing that he is only a steward.

When all is said and done. You, yourself are the source of both your happiness, power and suffering.

Treat yourself very well. Surprisingly, the others will follow.

In real life, make yourself scarce. No one appreciates anyone, whose available to all.

Do all the things in your own time. Let the others know that it is only you, who is in charge.

Always trade space for time.
