It is a shame that once again, the FBI hands the militia movement another martyr.
As we sit here, this killing will go on to inspire dozens of misguided right wing radicals to join militias and to plot further gun saturated interactions with federal authorities.....perpetuating a cycle of violence for decades to come.
And people have trouble understanding the Middle East?
I've read about five hundred pages of analysis on this one incident so far (mostly trying to find out exactly what went down), and after that I don't think this is going to inspire anyone but those already in "the Movement".
It also makes me think that the reason he got shot is that he publicly and loudly said he wouldn't be taken alive, including that he would go down shooting -- so agents on the scene were ready to shoot at his slightest move. They might have been wise to have been ready with a couple of net guns, though unless a target is running the nets aren't sufficiently entangling to prevent drawing a sidearm -- yet it would have played well even if they'd had to shoot him in the end anyway, leaving little to no room for the accusation of murder by law enforcement.
BTW, in those analyses an explanation emerges of why some thought he was shot while on his knees: standing in that deep snow, a still frame would certainly look like he was on his knees while the agent from the woods side was standing in already-packed snow (note the shallow tire tracks) was clearly on his feet.
One other item emerged: the hypothesis that the FBI and OSP deliberately waited until there was a heavy snowfall precisely so that they could choose spots on the highway where drivers would be tempted to leave the pavement but would end up stuck in the snow. If that's true, my hat's off to the guy with such imagination.
