A good way to spend your time is to think of others. A priest in my town.

Love this thread. Thanks to you all for sharing your wisdom. Here is one I learned when I was a child: "El mono aunque lo vistan de seda, mono se queda" You can dress a monkey in silk but you will still have a monkey.

"The truth is incontrovertible. Panic may resent it; ignorance may deride it; malice may distort it, but there it is." -- Churchill.

Shakespeare " Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once!

"Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking." - The Scarecrow, in THE WIZARD OF OZ, 1939.

My favorite movie quote ever in my lifetime or earlier. the truth of that saying is SO BLATANT these days!

''Find a place inside where there is joy, and the joy will bring out the pain'' ... Joseph Campbell

I hate to say this, but I think there is a slight typo (or autocorrect error) here: bring should be burn (at least according the sources I've seen).

“Find a place inside where there's joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.”

Something to really think about in these troubled times!

People who cease to believe in God or goodness altogether still believe in the devil... Evil is always possible. And goodness is eternally difficult.

Anne Rice - Interview With The Vampire

''Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that''

"I have drunk since I was 15, and few things have given me more pleasure. When you work hard all day with your head and you must work again the next day, what else can change your ideas and make them run on a different plane like whiskey?"

Yesterday I read the following quote in Italian attributed to Gustav Mahler:

"La tradizione e' conservare il fuoco non adorare le ceneri," or "Tradition is to preserve the flame not to adore the ashes."

I then found the original Mahler quote, "Tradition ist die Weitergabe des Feuers und nicht die Anbetung der Asche" and this version in English, "Tradition is not the worship of ashes but the preservation of fire." I also read that Mahler attributed the quote to Thomas More, but that no one has been able to find it in his writings.

I also found this variation from Jean Jaures, a Mahler's French contemporary: "Etre fidele a la tradition, c'est etre fidele a la flamme et non a la cendre," or "To be faithful to the tradition is to be faithful to the flame and not to the ash."
