Racism in the Gay Commuinty

Re: Racism in the Gay Community

I'm assuming that your concern is with this part of my post. If it isn't, please let me know as that's the part I'll address at the moment.

Sort of, but not completely.

Running with that assumption, what's wrong with caring more about an issue that affects you directly? I believe it's perfectly reasonable for someone to acknowledge that there are other problems, but to focus on the ones that affect them personally.

In a nutshell, this pretty much says that racism doesn't have a direct effect on white gays, and that you as a black man find it acceptable ("reasonable") that they don't pay it much attention because it's not very high on their list of priorities.

Enough with the seriousness and back to the cuddlefest. Mused, could you Irish up my cocoa for me?

Ok. I just have to go academic it seems...Now. I DO NOT MEAN OFFENSE TO ANYONE. Scientific thesis and hypotheses are blind.

1). Problem. Hate to use social Darwinisim...but honestly. If survival of the fittest holds true. At a primal level..weather gay/bi/straight...Humans will select the best mate or the most viable. African Americans, in large part are seen very negatively...many grow up in poverty and the news is the first to point out when an African American has committed a crime. 1 in 9 African American males are imprisoned in the United States. So. Many are seen as undereducated and unworthy to mate with. Sub consciously. I mean we can all say we have no prejudices but it's clear that when we look deep down...all of us do. If that hypothesis holds true. The explanation of self hatred in large part by many African Americans can be explained as a perceived deficiency. Even well to do African Americans, Kenneth Chenult (CEO AMEX), Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson....see a perceived deficiency. Those who make it out of poverty are the first to move away from neighborhoods. Honestly...I had the chance to go to Evanston Township High School. One of the only North Shore Suburban schools with real diversity...There are many impoverished African Americans who have been confined to a certan section of the city of Evanston...And then there are those who are Upper middle and Upper class...I need you to understand that where I come from...Its not color that matters. It is money. For example...Most African American students in AP classes at ETHS are upper middle class. If you carry yourself as if you are from the hood' you will be treated as such in my hometown...Simple.

Now..I have much more I can say...but my hair is air drying...and I need to get it under the blow-dryer.

Lovewill, I understand the sociological theory behind what you're saying, it's not new. But your analysis is is a condescending oversimplification of race-relations, particularly with regard to the behavior of upwardly mobile African Americans. Blacks who become affluent are not abandoning the inner-city in droves to live in white suburbs. Many are staying behind to rebuild the communities they came from and intend to live there, graciously.

And I agree it is irritating to see people in this thread who have no serious interest in the topic, whistling in the dark, for no good reason.

As usual the race threads turns into a black of guys (and occasionally Asian) talking about the topic and the whites staying out or trying to derail it. I know it's tiresome to see this over and over, but for some gays, it's actually a daily reality. White privilege means not having to think about race, so you roll your eyes at this, but it actually means something to other people. Just remember that before scorning these threads.

I understand what you're saying Lovewill. Babi knows what he's talking about I trust his opinion. Moe, on the other hand, talks as if he's driving naked down a highway with a bottle of champagne and yelling at someone over a cell phone.

In other words, don't listen to his NOIZE. It's ok to want certain things Lovewill, but there's nothing wrong with being black either. I don't straighten my hair anymore. My hair is curly, if a dude doesn't like it oH WELLLZ. You seem like a good guy though Lovewill, don't let them get to you.

BITCH, it ain't over till I say it's over. Those poison barbs you launched at me during those other threads are still stuck in my heart, and I'll be damned if I let you get away with it. I'm dragging your Soul Sista self down to the pit, cause you a DUMB ASS BITCH! I'm goin Medea on yo ass, you ain't got nuthin on me Huney...you just an afterthought.

lol yeah I'm just playing. But you guys shouldn't attack Lovewill for stating his opinion.

Well said. The emperor never likes to be reminded that he has no clothes. But let me just add this, for the young minorities among us. Whatever discomfort or uneasiness you feel about the way things are will not ease with time; nor with money, status, or any individual acceptance you may gain.

If you should be so fortunate as to find yourself sitting in an upscale, gated community with a prestigious, corporate job, 10 years from now; your identity politics and activist tendencies will still burn. And certain attitudes of indifference and insensitivity, relating to us will continue to get on your first nerve, your last nerve, and every nerve in between. But that is life, also. Not just the job, the clubs, the parties, the clothes, and the men.

Now let me drink this next glass of champagne and allow these thoughts sleep in my mind. Yes, dammit, I drink champagne while doing my MBA homework and posting on JUB. Like the sign says: "Never blend in." We are who we are and we do what we have to do.

You heard it from the BGP.
