Losing the Senate seat would mean at least two years of Congressional deadlock worse than it is now. Something that happened 30 years ago probably is not important enough to justify voting for deadlock.

^ If Ben is an atheist, and if he was a surgeon or an attorney [*snark*], he would still have COMPLETE right to discriminate due to "religious" beliefs, if the Republicans took a ruling (for the baker) to its extreme. They would. They ALWAYS take the extreme road.

Certainly if discrimination is allowed, no religious test will ever be required, it can be purely on one's own prejudices and animus.

To be logical, you need to decide what issue is more important. Unless you claim that Moore is today going to have sex with under age young women, what he did or did not do years ago is not as important as what he is doing or will do now. How is it relevant? On the other hand gridlock in the Senate, including the selection of Judges is extremely important; our democracy probably hangs in the balance. 5 liberals on the Supreme Court will change our election laws to favor their party.
