Rufus Wainwright Slams Beyonce's Music

It's kind of weird how out of all the artists to point out he singles out Beyonce, is it because she's gorgeous, talented and currently one of the top selling female artists out now? Beyonce did not rip Kylie Minogue off, that whole concept was inspired from the 1927 film "Metropolis". Everyone wants to accuse Beyonce of being unoriginal, but if that's the case let's point out how Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are nothing more than watered down versions of Janet and Micheal Jackson, and Fergie let's just call her a wanna be Gwen Stefani. That comment Rufus made was a personal attack on Beyonce and we all know it, the man is bitter bottom line. Why not call out Ashlee Simpson who is one of the biggest frauds ever to hit the music industry or Justin Timberlake who went from being this advocate for pop music and now wants to be this r&b crooner. Just because you have a certain liking for a specific genre of music does not mean you are lacking when it comes to intellect, everyone has their tastes. Beyonce is a powerhouse performer, and talent, and even if you strip her of that $1000 hair weave, coutoure dress and put her in some sweats and a scull cap, she's still gonna be talented. When she performed with Prince at the Grammy's she showed the world that she is here to stay. Rufus is just mad because Beyonce has been all over the billboard charts and he is no where to be found.

He said exactly why he singled her out. Did you read the original post?
Being good-looking and talented and top-selling doesn't mean that your product is good. Many talented people end up a victim of the entertainment industry and sell out to the perks rather than the fans. I'm sure Beyonce is talented, but that doesn't automatically make her albums good.

Not everyone who accuses Beyonce of being unoriginal are fans of the other craptastic entertainers so you can just put that baby to bed.

If he had said something about Ashlee Simpson, we'd be saying "Why not call out Beyonce? He's just making personal attacks on Ashlee Simpson." See how that works?

Just because you have a certain liking for a specific genre of music does not mean you are lacking when it comes to intellect, everyone has their tastes.

Someone's genre-preference is rarely indicative of their intellect. A better litmus test would be asking them to explain why they think it's good music. This is why understanding value systems is so important. You have to draw a clear line in your mind between "things that are good" and "things that you like".

When she performed with Prince at the Grammy's she showed the world that she is here to stay. Rufus is just mad because Beyonce has been all over the billboard charts and he is no where to be found.

You have no proof that Rufus is mad because of Beyonce's popularity so stop throwing that around like it's true.

i think he pointed her out because she was getting too much play on the radio and TV and he was tired of hearing her shit. Ashlee Simpson doesnt get that much air play, and neither do others.

It was tacky on his part to single her out end of discussion. He could of said artists in general. Even if he would have said Ashlee or Justin it still would of been tacky. I just find it odd that being that we have so many other artists he decides to spit out her name. Like I said before the man has been out since the late 90's and his fanbase is no where near the size of her's and he's pissed.

beyonce is annoying as hell. she copies everyone, jennifer lopez, kylie minogue, u name it! beyonce has copied them all! Her "Get Me Bodied" performance at the BET Awards was purely a rip off from Kylie's fever tour performance...

THANK YOU !! That was my immediate thought when I saw beyonce come out on stage dressed in that robot garb, then disrobe into a shiny outfit, which is, without a doubt, a carbon copy of Minogue's ORIGINAL stage show on her FEVER tour. WHY no one else picked this up is beyond me, other than the fact it was BEYONCE and no one at that show was going to call her on it.

I was gonna write a long drawn out comment defending Beyonce... but im not. Just know that if you can write paragraphs on paragraphs about someones music you "don't like" then you either like the music or you're hating on the artist. BOTTOM LINE. And the reason why Beyonce is so successful is because she is the best, no one compares. Britney Spears was a "fad" she was someone who never had talent and became successful. You cant even put her and Beyonce in the same sentence. And whoever this Rufus guy is needs to stop trying to tear someone else down and step his game up, then maybe he'll be as successful too.
Good Day!!

No, what's tacky is saying "of" instead of "have" like a third grader. That's right, I went there.

Secondly, you didn't actually argue any of my points. I think it's safe to say that I win this one. Nice try though.

Wow like, oh my god. You totally said you weren't going to write a long, drawn-out comment defending Beyonce and then like, out of the blue, YOU DID! How drammatic.

Beyonce's success is debatable, obviously. You have to remember that making money does not automatically equal success. This is what Rufus was getting at. If Beyonce can make money selling crap to people, what does that say about "people" (specifically, people who tend to be won over by show rather than quality)? It says that we've LOWERED OUR STANDARDS. And by "we", I mean people that accept Beyonce as a legitimate artist.

Well...STEAMPUNK... I don't think understand what artistry is... an artists creates something and in doing that they invest themselves in the process. Beyonce has created a sound, a brand, and a name that NO ONE else has. (and if anybody denies that... you are lying to yourself). And I understand that everyone is'nt a Beyonce fan, i get that, but to call her music crap is ubsurd. There is no way you can sell 100 million albums and have 10 Grammys, not to mention countless other awards, and your music is crap!! Sorry...NO WAY!! People have not lowered their standards by endulging in her as an artist. She is an ENTERTAINER... and one of the BEST. She gonna be here so ya might as well get used to it!!
P.S.- Was I long and drawn out again??

Well...STEAMPUNK... I don't think understand what artistry is... an artists creates something and in doing that they invest themselves in the process.

That's exactly the kind of thing someone would say who doesn't know the first thing about art. Art is about quality. It's about producing something that creates a sort of event at which awareness of both subject and object is made possible. The union of a medium and its message are judged solely by their apparent harmony. And everyone gets it. They just can't explain why. It's all about quality, my friend.

Beyonce has created a sound, a brand, and a name that NO ONE else has. (and if anybody denies that... you are lying to yourself).

So Beyonce created Rhythm and Blues and Soul and Pop? Tell that to Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie and The Jackson 5. Beyonce hasn't created anything new. She's riding the coat-tails of the great artists who came before her. Ever heard the phrase "there's nothing new under the sun"?

And I understand that everyone is'nt a Beyonce fan, i get that, but to call her music crap is ubsurd. There is no way you can sell 100 million albums and have 10 Grammys, not to mention countless other awards, and your music is crap!! Sorry...NO WAY!!

Plenty of people went double-platinum selling crap to teenagers. Just look at Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

People have not lowered their standards by endulging in her as an artist. She is an ENTERTAINER... and one of the BEST. She gonna be here so ya might as well get used to it!!

You're wrong. People have definitely lowered their standards and I'm very sorry you cannot see this.

P.S.- Was I long and drawn out again??

Heh

I wonder what Rufus Wainwright would say about Prince, who incidentally has performed with Beyonce. Prince won't perform with just anyone. One must have talent to be allowed on stage with him.

I'm sure Prince would tear Rufus a new asshole.

Talent has nothing to do with it. Prince likes beautiful women. Apollonia, Vanity... Beyonce fits right in. His favorite girl band was TLC. I love TLC, too, but there have been and are better singers than those girls.

Oh STEAMPUNK...buddy you don't have a clue... and thats okay. But you cant compare Britney and Justin to Beyonce...thats a joke. #1-Double Platinum is'nt the same as 100 million albums(2xPlatinum=2 million).
#2- I never said Beyonce created R&B, thats crazy. What I did say was she has created a sound in R&B that was not there before (and unless know R&B, you won't understand that. And I dont think you do because Ella, Duke, and Count Basie were Jazz musicians, if you want to talk about truly shaping R&B you would say: Ray Charles, Sam Cook, Aretha Franklin etc. And it was established way before the Jackson 5).
#3- As for people lowering their standards... You dont respect her work, so you're going to always think someone is lowering their standards. Thats just you.
#4- And as for what art is...your view is all screwed up. I could look at the Mona Lisa and say it's a peice of Shit...and you could look at it and think it's the greatest thing a man could have ever created. It's all in what inspires you...THATS WHAT ART IS!!! Everyone WILL NOT GET IT...my friend. It's what moves you. So before you say Beyonce is crap do your homework...listen to songs other than what you hear and see on the T.V. And if you are still not impressed then say "Well Beyonce does'nt inspire or move me by her music." Don't call it crap because thats not fair...I take it you're not an atrtist, because if you were you would understand that...my friend.
Good Day!!

Of course U can't compare Britney and Beyonce, cuz Beyonce is not worth being compared to a superstar ... whose name on the Street of Fame ... Brit's vocals may not good but her dance move was excellent, for me, no one ever can compare to her dancing ... But U have to admit Baby One More Time is an excellent song, And other songs that make great success too ... compare to what I've heard from Beyonce ... yes, her vocals good in Irreplaceble, Baby Boy and thats all, others like Deja Vu, and Ring The Arlarm stuff was crap or even shit ... Her B*Day was full of shit by the way

I can tell you why, it was on BET. Unfortunately, not many of people of BET's target demo are Kylie Minogue fans. I noticed that copycat move myself and I immediately changed the channel.

Oh STEAMPUNK...buddy you don't have a clue... and thats okay. But you cant compare Britney and Justin to Beyonce...thats a joke. #1-Double Platinum is'nt the same as 100 million albums(2xPlatinum=2 million).

I never said double platinum was the same as 100 million albums. I was giving a basis for comparison. Even entertainers that go double platinum can be talentless hacks.

#2- I never said Beyonce created R&B, thats crazy. What I did say was she has created a sound in R&B that was not there before (and unless know R&B, you won't understand that. I never said Jackson 5 was R&B. Remember, I named Pop as a genre to which Beyonce owes her music.

Oh, and as far as the artists I named, they contributed to most of what you hear in Rhythm and Blues. Going back as far as the original contributers is what makes my argument better. :)

Edit: Beyonce hasn't added anything new to R&B that wasn't there already.

#3- As for people lowering their standards... You dont respect her work, so you're going to always think someone is lowering their standards. Thats just you.

I don't respect her work because I haven't lowered my standards. That's how it works. When you expect people to produce things of quality, you don't settle for second best. Hehe

#4- And as for what art is...your view is all screwed up. I could look at the Mona Lisa and say it's a peice of Shit...and you could look at it and think it's the greatest thing a man could have ever created. Art is not purely subjective. Any actual person with an iota of an art education could tell you that. I would sit here and debate the rest of it, theory and all, if I thought for a moment that you'd actually listen. But your rigid thinking makes it incredibly difficult.

I have listened to Beyonce. I jam out to her music all the time. It's fun and bombastic and dance-worthy, but it's not "good". Get it? Tryin' to school you on value systems, "friend". ;)
