Rufus Wainwright Slams Beyonce's Music

Ok... I'm going to become an obscure artist who makes unpopular music that no one buys. Then, for some reason, I have the right to then trash more successful and arguably more talented music artists just because their music is played on the radio and my music isn't.

It's a sad case of jealousy. It's the kick the person at the top type of mentality. You know a lot of people hate Donald Trump just because he's rich. Insecure people like to forget that Donald earned his accolades.

Rufus (who) fell victim to this.

It's an entirely different mentality. Usually indie/alternative artists like Rufus Wainwright don't want to be the big-selling artist like Beyonce, because then they'll be on a major label, which more often than not pressure them to make that big hit single. I don't think Rufus is jealous; otherwise he'd be making more accessible pop or rock music instead of baroque-influenced music.

That is very true... very true.

She makes me sick too with her ditsy act (maybe it isn't an act).

I do think she is more talented than a lot of people give her credit for.

your retarded she doesnt play ditsy AT ALL look at her interviews she's actually really reserved in the ones i have seen...and yes she does have a lot of talent she has a great voice and co-writes all her songs

no one can fight Elvin here
the last person who did showed up 3 months later in a ditch in Elsalvador

you be part of the mafia
the gay mafia
...hahahahahahahaha
we need to make a gay mafia
that'd be great

The gay mafia is scarier than any other. You don't wanna fuck with those mac daddies.

What's funny about this whole thing is that Rufus had slight Beyonce in order to get this many people talking about him.

I agree, maybe he feels the need to attack her to get his popularity up so that he can make more money and fuel his meth addiction, can we say RELAPSE.

He's from New York, and has had strong commercial success everywhere but the US.

Sorry to nit-pick, but Rufus Wainwright is Canadian-American. His mother, Kate McGarrigle, is from Quebec and his father is from North Carolina. He was born in New York, but spent most of his childhood in Montreal after his parents divorced. He still refers to Montreal as his "home town" and maintains a residence in Canada.

Again, don't mean to be so picky, but ya gotta support your own, y'know.;)

More Rufus fun facts:
He is bilingual (French/English)
We was raped when he was 14
Elton John convinced him to seek help for his Meth Addiction

Sorry...that quote about him being from the NY was from Legend500....still haven't mastered the whole "quote" function yet.

Apparently, Rufus was raped in a park in London by a guy he picked up from a bar. This information comes from Wikipedia though, so take it with a grain of salt. Could be true, who knows.

In the songwriting credits they put them in order of "contribution" : the one that wrote the most goes first, the one that contributed the least goes last etc...

That's why for example she wasn't nominated for an Oscar for "Listen", because she contributed the least for the song and there were 4 contributors and only 3 can get the nomination...

Oh man here we go again. Personally I could care less who has more money/success/popularity or who contributed the most to music ; what I wanna know is why do you guys take the sides of people you don't know from a hole in the ground so quickly -- while you're on this JUB forum "defending their honor" ; they're somewhere enjoying their lives and luxuries not knowing or giving two shits about you. But of course, that just how I feel.

I understand exactly from where you're coming.

To those of you unfamiliar with Rufus Wainwright, here are a couple of his performances:

Hallelujah:

Going to a Town:

One Man Guy:

The Maker Makes:

The first video, "Hallelujah" was written by Leonard Cohen and performed by Rufus. The other three "Going to a Town," "One Man Guy," and "The Maker Makes" are written and performed by Rufus. "Going to a Town" is his commentary on the Bush administration. A talented pianist, Rufus usually accompanies himself on the piano during his performancies.

Wainwright's music is in an entirely different universe than Beyonce's. Rufus has been commissioned to write an opera for the New York Metropolitan Opera. He is writing the music and the libretto himself. He is writing the libretto in French, which I presume he speaks fluently as a result of growing up in Canada. It is hard to imagine Beyonce Knowles writing an opera for the Metropolitan!

I suspect Wainwright's music might be more popular if he wasn't so obviously gay-acting on stage. (That's not a complaint - just an observation). He is fond of making risque and even lewd gay references on stage, such as once relating how he asked a date to "rim" him, etc. I suspect most of his audiences would prefer he leave out details that graphic.

he is actually a very good singer and i like all the songs he had written, and performed on this thread... more power to him.

I adore Rufus. I'm going to see him! At the end of July! I've already wet my pants a few times in excitement. I need to stop doing that.

I like more Rufus Wainwright songs than Beyonce songs, as it turns out. But I'm not much of a fan of either. I take songs one at a time. A song isn't good because Rufus wrote it or because Beyonce sang it. It's good because I like it. I don't care how "important" it is, or how "artistic" it is, or if it'll still be popular a year, ten years, a hundred years from now.

Do I like it?

Rufus is sick of Beyonce's music. I can understand that. To my ears, the best of it is just good pop - not even great pop. A lot of people disagree with him...and me. That's fine. If we can't disagree about music, what the hell CAN we disagree about?

Beyonce' could give a shit, her plan is to retire by 30 and I'm betting she's well on her way.
I've no true opinion on Rufus, what I've heard is not my kind of music, but he must be a tad intelligent. After all, he insulted one of the biggest stars in the world and got people to talk about him. It's not exactly clever, but all publicity is good publicity I hear.

When people debate, it's generally because they're concerned with finding the truth. I don't think anyone is defending "honor" here.

I don't care about either musician's personal life. How you managed to tie those two ideas together is beyond me. If a celebrity is wealthy, we shouldn't concern ourselves with the things they produce?
