School Suspends Teacher After Gay Marriage Facebook Comment

There was no mention of harm to anyone. There was only his personal sense of disgust at marriage equality.

That "sense of disgust" is the harm. He's made himself a victim.

He is disgusted with marriage equality, but you don't know that he's disgusted with gay people and their relationships, in general.

Same as I don't know he's only a bigot on facebook?

It doesn't cause harm anymore than him expressing any other political opinion. Just because some people's feelings are hurt doesn't mean he has harmed them or that he deserves punishment.

Censorship does more harm.

Well finally you've got something right. Censorship does more harm. I'm glad this fuckjob has decided to quit censoring himself about how he views gays and lesbians.

Again, just because you were offended by his viewpoint doesn't mean you were harmed. Sorry. Those are your feelings so you should take responsibility for them.

And no, you don't know anything about the man outside of what he posted on his Facebook status. A rush to judgment doesn't do anyone any favors, especially those like you who would so quickly seek to pass judgment on someone else.

I'm glad he was uncensored, too, and I hope he gets his job back. And I'm sorry if you don't agree with me about that, or anything for that matter.

Uh huh...

To be offended, means there was something offensive. This isn't about how I, or you, feel about what this man says. It is about his behavior and his position in regards to students, that we've both established by probability are gay.

-----------------------------

But now, what's good for the goose is good for the gander no? So you can take your "so quick to pass judgement" bullshit right back to where it needs to be and tell that to the fuckjob. Him being so quick to judge those entering in to a same sex marriage somehow magically getting a pass from you and all. Judge us all, or judge no one, it's your choice. But you can't have it both ways.

p.s. My personal favorite is how you say a rush to judgement doesn't do any favors and immediately rush to judge me. Nice!

Behavior? He hasn't done anything inappropriate to begin with. He expressed an opinion that you didn't like about same-sex marriage. Lots of people have those, dear, and unless it can be shown that his somehow negatively affect his students or that he discriminates against them in some way, his "position" is a non-issue.

Yes, he shouldn't be so quick to pass judgment on marriage equality. I never gave him a pass. But I also don't think he should be suspended/punished for his views.

Whatever drives the point home.

And he doesn't know anything about gay marriage or gay people to suggest that marriage between same sex couples is a 'cesspool'. But apparently the thought of that makes him want to throw up. He is a person making judgments himself.

Whether you like it or not, he works as a person who has to be careful of what he says when it comes to public speaking or any medium that can be publicly viewed. He broke ethics codes, you don't like it, that is too bad. He has rules to follow as a Teacher, he knew that and he messed up. He doesn't like it, that is his own fault and maybe he should find another occupation where he wouldn't be held accountable for it.

The high school will have to decide what to do with him, and to what extent he broke any ethics code.

It is inappropriate to publicly insult a demographic within his classroom. Typing on a keyboard is a behavior. Calling gay people "cesspools" is a behavior.

In effect, he's bullying his students. How you don't get that, I'll never understand.

This case puts in mind the psychology student who was kicked out of her program for "holding on to her traditional values"...

What seems to not be understood, is that gays and lesbians are fully functioning segments of this society. Even though many states in this country do not have discrimination laws in place, Florida does.

We're here, we're queer, get used to it.

Seems getting used to it is going to entail a bit of work huh?

He didn't insult a demographic. Like I said, you don't know his feelings about gay people and relationships.

Wow.

Basically, 99% of your argument against him is based on "in effect" arguments, which are, in effect, assumptions about him and what he believes about gays and his potentially gay students.

Two completely different situations.

By censoring people and hoping they get fired when you don't like what they say, eh?

And I'm sorry to natter on, but one more thing strikes me after reading that link:

WHO THE FUKOSHIMA NAMED ANY PLACE IN FLORIDA "MOUNT"?!!!

:grrr:

Maybe the guy who named the town, knew a girl named Dora, and he really wanted to get into her pants, so one day he thought "Boy, I'd really love to mount Dora" and, voila, the name for a town was born??

It's indicative of his prejudice against gay marriage, yes. But his statement of disgust was not directed at the students. You can't automatically pin that on him.

Yes we can. JQ

By him expressing his disgust for gay marriage, he has immediately done irreparable harm to the gay students in his class, his school and his community.

He has made it very clear in this one stupid moment, that they have no right to have aspirations to equality with their heterosexual peers; that those who dream of marriage and a secure loving relationship are somehow deviants and unworthy.

And his comments then influence the other students and his environment.

As a teacher, he is not entitled to promulgate his faith, to pass judgement or opinion on matters that are in essence faith based or to marginalize any student because of their race, their faith, their sexuality.

What if he had expressed his disgust over inter-racial marriage.

Would there have been any question about this?

If he were in my community, I'd be raising holy hell.

Mount Dora High School? Seriously? Hate to be the girl named Dora in that school.

I don't have to assume anything. He willingly let his stance be known. Again, how you can't understand that is beyond me. Are you a masochist?
By censoring people and hoping they get fired when you don't like what they say, eh?

No. By advocating free expression and then removing from the public sector those who will not serve ALL the public. Or do you feel the gay children at that school don't deserve to be treated equally?

Get used to it.

Wow...teachers really do have to be careful...there is a really fine line

In the following case, the court dropped all of the more than 20 statements, with the exception of 2, that a teacher made about religion.

High school teacher's anti-Creationism comment violated law

It may have been mentioned above...this is a huge thread...but let it be repeated, if so, that he was posting where MOST OF HIS OWN STUDENTS WILL MORE THAN LIKELY SEE THE COMMENTS.

It is tantamount to standing in front of his class and calling the class a cesspool because there are gay kids in it. (I need to look at the actual comment, though - somehow I missed the link - is it in the OP? I'll look as soon as I leave this.)

Though many schools would probably actually accept such front-of-the-class behavior by a teacher nowadays, especially if they're tenured, such behavior is cruel, unwarranted, and very possibly life-threatening.

[EDIT: The news article doesn't have the original post, but the summary sounds like it was rather cruel toward people who happen to love each other. I guess it didn't call the students or class a cesspool...but still enough to instill or reinforce antigay sentiment!! If I were to post something similar on my Facebook, which of course I'm not about to, I don't have a bunch of impressionable children who I interact with many times per week, who are going to see that vitriol, possibly take it to heart, and lash out at those horrible ((faggots)).]

The district has not made a decision about what further disciplinary action could be taken against Buell. The award-winning social studies teacher was suspended and working in a clerical position at the school district’s administration building.
