Senate Repeals DADT

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

JockBoy,

Who do you bet will be the extra vote (right now there are 61 confirmed)?

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Spin the dreidel. Let's see if it isn't Gregg, Lugar, Kirk, or Voinovich.

Don't forget Ensign as well.

BTW I read Lugar has pretty much said he won't vote for repeal now, which surprised me since he just a few months ago seemed so open to it. Anticipating a primary challenge perhaps?

Kirk is a no vote. I sent an email last week urging a yes and got a reply that basically said he could not support it. His a conservative Republican packaged and disguised as a moderate.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Voinovich has no reason not to support it. He's on the way out and not beholden to the far right.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

^^^Same goes for Gregg and Bond

Right before election day, Kirk was portraying himself as an independent. When he compared his victory to "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" I wanted to puke. If I say anything further, I will be violating JUB posting (and George Carlin) standards.

He's one of the best U.S. Senators (Karl Rove money) can buy. He's not to be trusted.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

If some politicians are smart, they will want to be on the winning side of history.

Of course, smart and politicians is like bagpipe music or military intelligence.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Senator Wyden has prostate cancer and will miss votes starting today. He has surgery on Monday (but apparently he will be able to vote this weekend). Wish him well and hope he's available to vote for cloture on the bill.

Mark Kirk won't be accused of being smart any time soon.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

I'm hearing contradictory reports about Sen. Wyden, does anyone really know if he will be there or not?

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Ok, this isn't over yet.

Lieberman just said today that on the Republican side he has only confirmed Collins and Murkowsi 100%, and now there are reports coming out that Kent Conrad (a Dem) might also vote against it which is odd because he voted for cloture on NDAA.

That means only 58 completely confirmed at this point.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

I just want all of my friends in the US to know that we have, chilled, a fine bottle of Dom Perigon ready for tomorrow.

If the vote passes, the first toast at our dinner party will be to the realization of fundamental civil rights for homos in the US armed forces and a welcome to the US in joining enlightened and confident nations in accepting diversity as part of the strength of military forces and in advancing the cause of democracy and civil rights the world over.

I am so hoping to be able to give this toast to the guests we will have from many countries around the world.

As I keep asking.

How will the Senators figure out a way to fuck this up so that the debate can continue for the next 30 years?

I always thought that the 62 vote projection was so much wishful thinking.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

If Brown and Snowe follow through with their previous statements of support (though they are not 100% confirmed yet) then we should still have 60 votes even if Conrad votes no.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

update: brown is now a confirmed yes. So we have 59 confirmed yes.

I think either Snowe or Conrad (or one other GOPer like Ensign, Luger, etc) would be needed for 60.

Snowe has said that she still wants to see a spending bill passed first, which the Senate has not done yet.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

It's just a CR.

Which is a spending bill. ;)

It extends the length of the previous appropriations. It just doesn't issue any new guidance on how the money is to be spent.
