Senate Repeals DADT

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

So now all that remains is calling for the vote on the underlying bill. I can hardly imagine that not happening. It looks like we're less than a week away. Good. And no thanks to my Senators.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Isn't it a mandatory 50 hours?

It is normally 30 hours but that can be waived by unanimous consent, so it can be anytime really. Lieberman said they could even vote on final passage later today.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

McCain is a bigot. If it gets repealed, his head might explode.

Your mouth to God's ear! We used to call that a "nervous breakdown." What an image! John McCain in a strait-jacket. :p

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Is it really a Victory?

Here's the thing folks...Since 2008 The Obama Administration and the CURRENT Democrats in Congress has done more for the Gay Community than any previous Administration & Congress in our American History...It's certainly not appreciated...

There's a portion of the Gay Community that HATES President Obama and could careless about Bills he pass that will allow Gays in our country to feel like "Citizens"...

So who is this a Victory for? Conservative Gays & Moderate Dems in the Gay Community still plan on not voting in 2012 or vote for a Republican or continue Praying that the Democratic Party nominates another Candidate to run.....

Over the last 2yrs The Obama Administration has tackled most of the issues they stumped on and it's still not enough..It's VERY interesting that The Obama Administration only received 70% of the "Gay Vote" in 2008, yet President Obama is FEARLESS when he speaks about Gay Rights and has passed more Bills for Gays than any other struggling Group......That 70% of Gay Supporters has dwindled down to about 50% or less...How Fucking TWISTED is that...It's comical when you think about it..

So who is the "Victor" in all of this?

^^^I know but I'm still Mad.....

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Sources say the final vote will happen at 3 PM today!

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

And Obama didn't pull a Bush. You know, use his attorney general as a tool to get laws overturned.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Congradulations to everyone!

Exactly...But Gay Activists were all over CNN & MSNBC BASHING the Obama Adminstration for allowing Congress to Repeal the Bill instead of the Courts......

President Obama LIVED & BREATHED the Constitution at Harvard...But people still question why he did what he did...

Agreed, it was also completely hypocritical because the left got all over Bush for expanding his executive authority to do what he wanted irrespective of law.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

President Obama said it would be repealed by the end of the year. Looks like he's correct.
Again.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Tony Perkins is a joke.

Tony Perkins released this statement, in which exactly ONE phrase was both truthful and provided his real motivation for opposing this.

This represents a substantial increase in the percentage of truthful content in Mr Perkins' statements.

truthful statement in bold:
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council:

"Today is a tragic day for our armed forces. The American military exists for only one purpose - to fight and win wars. Yet it has now been hijacked and turned into a tool for imposing on the country a radical social agenda. This may advance the cause of reshaping social attitudes regarding human sexuality, but it will only do harm to the military's ability to fulfill its mission.

"It is shameful that the Democratic leadership, aided by Republican Senators, has forced through such a radical change in a lame-duck session of Congress. The 1993 law which is to be repealed was adopted only after months of debate and at least a dozen Congressional hearings. The repeal has been forced through only eighteen days after the Pentagon released a massive report, which raised more questions than it answered on the impact the overturning of this policy will have on our nation's military.

"It is clear why this was done: not to enhance the military's ability to accomplish its mission or to enhance national security. Rather, it is a political payoff to a tiny, but loud and wealthy, part of the Democratic base. They knew that the Congress elected last month would never adopt such legislation - certainly not without a more thoughtful and deliberative process.

"We thank Senators John McCain, James Inhofe, Jeff Sessions and Jim DeMint, as well as all of those who voted to support our troops over advancing a liberal social agenda. These senators fought hard for our men and women in uniform, and their efforts will not be forgotten."

Yes, Mr Perkins, it sure will. And hopefully it will further marginalize people like you.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Hey question, where are the Obama/Dem bashers in the thread? NickCole? They are all so quiet?

Did their heads explode because Obama is keeping his word and doing things they way he said he would in the first place? Not trying to overstep his power like previous administrations? Odd...I know.

Anyway, this is great news, more for me and people like me in the military than anyone else. But this is still a major victory for the glbt community and this will live in history now. Or at least gay history if anything.

I'm an Obama basher so I'll be happy to answer this...Obama did shit to get this passed. It was Congress, not Obama that got this to a vote.Obama,if you haven't noticed,is pretty fucking useless.

As a matter of fact, it was Obama that instructed the Justice Department to appeal the original court verdict striking down DADT..What a fierce advocate..

If anyone here is to be thanked, let's thank Harry Reid for keeping the heat on and getting it to a vote..

You are just not aware of the facts.

Fact 1: Reid consulted with Obama in accelerating the vote on the bill today.

Fact 2: It was the White House who brokered the deal on the compromise language in the bill that was key to obtaining sufficient support.

Fact 3: Obama called key senators over the last few weeks to help secure their vote.

Fact 4: It was Obama who helped to initiate the study which also was key in building the necessary support.

Fact 5: Congress would likely not have even considered it if OBama had not made it a public priority earlier this year.

As a matter of fact, it was Obama that instructed the Justice Department to appeal the original court verdict striking down DADT..What a fierce advocate..
The executive branch does not get to choose which laws it likes. If they did it would set a dangerous precedent. That action had absolutely no relation to Obama's desire to see the policy repealed.

Some of the frustration is real. Why wait until the end to enact a landmark repeal?

But a lot of it is ignorance of how our government works. Obama will not and should not interfere with the judicial system. This is what separates us from Iran or any other dictatorship.

I like when you talk dirty..

About the facts as you see them..

1-How do you know that Obama had any role in accelerating the vote?

2-I know compromise is one of Obama favorite words, but this was a stand alone bill. What was there to compromise on? You vote yes or no..

3-What Senators did Obama consult with and how did he get them to change their vote?

4-Wasn't it also Obama that appointed the Marine Commandant that was badmouthing the study and, said that soldiers, distracted by gays among them, would die as a result of having to serve alongside gays?

5-Was it Obama that made it a priority or public pressure?

Yep, and when I told them how things worked, they insisted on licking their wounds. They were mad as can be and wanted to stay that way.
