Senate Repeals DADT

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

I don't know about you, but Harry Reid has left me cussing and biting my nails over all this. I would have credited Lieberman, Levin, and a few others. Reid's calling for the cloture vote on the Defense Appropriation Bill before the tax bill made me pretty angry. He's no Pelosi.

Obama, on the other hand, hasn't done anything to annoy me through all of this. He's a behind-the-scenes operator as far as I can tell--anything but a showboater. That probably isn't a particularly good thing for his political standing.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was referring to Congress in general and the president when I said both.

I would agree that Lieberman and other Senators have been more influential than has Reid. Still it was Reid who agreed to move up the timing of the vote to today when it was originally going to have been next week so I do credit him for that.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

65-31 was the tally on the final vote.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Actually, it has passed the Senate. But the full repeal will not occur until the president signs AND the president, SecDef and joint chiefs chairman certify it.

Fine. I'm reckoning the certification to be done in relatively short order. It's not going to be like the foot-dragging we've seen for the last six months, that's for sure.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Who besides Murkowski, Collins, Snowe, and Brown joined the Democrats?

I'm guessing Kirk, Ensign and Voinovich

Those 7 voted yes. And there was one more yes. I'm not sure who that was yet.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

Sadly I was out during the final vote.

The bill orders a mandatory waiting period, I forgot how long it is.

I'm thinking sometime in the Spring.

The waiting period in the amendment to the Def. Authorization Bill was 30 days. I'm assuming this stand alone bill tracks that pretty exactly. Have you heard that there was a change on that?

-The final vote had everyone who voted for cloture ,, plus Republicans Burr-N.C. (I know WTF?!) and Ensign-Nevada

-The mandatory waiting period is just two months

Everybody who worked hard on this, great job, WE DID IT!!! Go celebrate tonight!

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

The 8th one was Burr.

Yes, Richard Burr of NC.

No one had mentioned him as a supporter before. I bet his and Ensign's vote were more just to be on the right side of history once they knew it was going to pass.

60 days. Somehow back when we were looking at the Def. Auth. Bill I had counted it to January 29, and that would have made sense back then for the 60 day period. So I guess we can quit bitching about this until mid-February. :=D:

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

I believe it is 60 days from the time all of the officials certify the repeal. So it will be a bit longer than that.

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

I am so happy about this. At long last, an injustice of bigotry has ended! We can leave 2010 a little optimistic and hopeful for good things to come!

Re: Senate DADT vote likely on Saturday

:)

Lol. Hotatlboi I know you're just keeping it real but the senate repealed DADT!!

I'll change the thread title. ;)

Yes. I just looked at the text of the bill. The 60 days starts with that certification.

EDIT TO ADD--So I guess we can start bitching about how long the certification is taking. ;)

Burr was a HUGE shocker to me (but then again I believe he's on his way out anyways), but Ensign wasn't completely surprising. He had expressed support before, and Nevada is a pretty Libertarian state.

As far as certification goes, I expect it won't take too terribly long, considering Obama, Gates, and Mullen are all very supportive of repeal.

He's actually not on this way out, he was just reelected in Nov.

So I guess he's got time to live this down.

haha, actually I think he's probably taking a long term view.

With 70-75% support for repealing it right now, in 6 years and after DADT has been gone for 6 years, support for bringing it back will be exceedingly low, so he probably figures it will be a total nonissue in 6 years and he's probably right. I'm actually surprised that more Republicans didn't think about it in those terms and make the right call.
