Shaking up Japan -- an 8.9 quake

Here's an interesting article in JapanNews dated February 28. It suggested that the recent Christchurch NZ quakes were a distinct suggestion that movement of the Pacific tectonic plates had begun, and often followed a cycle of 30 years. The prediction: expect a major quake in the Japanese region before too long.

Talk about accurate predictions from science!

I've never heard of that cycle before -- fascinating!

The US already has aircraft carriers there with assistance. Just 1 day after the event. Boggling, it took several days for the US to get to New Orleans for any assistance to its own country.

That was under a very different leadership.

I didn't know whether you were joking before or serious about what you said of the US military. But I do know examples like 9/11 where USAF fighter jets scrambled to intercept was not my imagination.

I doubt that if terrorists suddenly attacked Washington DC that the US military would say "Sorry, can't help. Somewhere it says we are prohibited from being deployed in our own country. So we'll just watch."

Isn't it ultimately up to the Commander-in-Chief?

Spiffer,

Not to play Semantics....but we deploy our troops OUT side of the U.S., its Territories and or 'possessions' ... I believe within that realm, we EMPLOY
them and that takes precedence.

And, our UN-employment rate has been a bit high for a while.....COL.

You Think Maybe So?(!)

You Think Maybe So?(!)

Yes, I am not into playing semantics. Deploy, employ, whatever. I think the obvious point is that the US military can assist within and outside our own country.

Spiffer,

My response was tongue in cheek,

The msg was not.

We are in the same ball park man.

They are saying 4trains running along the coast are missing. Unknown how many people were on board.
Also a town of 9500 are missing.
These were on MSNBC. I'll see if I can find a link.

4 trains unaccounted for in tsunami-hit Miyagi, Iwate prefectures

Saturday 12th March, 05:19 AM JST

SENDAI —

Four trains running in a coastal area of Miyagi and Iwate prefectures remain unaccounted for after tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake hit the area Friday, the train operator said Saturday.

It is not known how many people were aboard the trains that were running on East Japan Railway Co.‘s Ofunato, Senseki and Kesennuma lines on the Pacific coast when the magnitude 8.8 quake hit northern Japan.

And this story, 9500 missing from one town.

9,500 people missing in tsunami-stricken Japan town
More than 1,700 likely dead or missing after Japan quake, tsunami; some 300,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, and number likely to rise.
By News Agencies

Some 9,500 people are unaccounted for in one of the worst-hit areas by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake in north-eastern Japan, officials said.

With many houses, cars and crops in Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture washed away by powerful tsunami after the deadly earthquake on Friday, many of the missing may be victims of the walls of water, prefectural officials said.

Add a tsunami to the quake, which was offshore east of Honshu. Buildings collapsed, hills slid, things washed out to sea; there was even a report that an entire apartment building just tipped over on its side.

Japanese are accustomed to quakes; they hardly pay attention to anything below a 4.0. But an 8.9 is a different game, very destructive, and not just a local event: the entire Pacific side of Japan had to worry about tsunamis -- and so do Guam, Hawaii, Russia, New Zealand, and a few places on the west coast of the U.S.

If anyone out there is affected, let us know!

couple of details loki.....first if it is the CinC then it should also be the
Coast Guard and the National Guard....the conveying title wheras using
a makes it a general term.

Second, and far more important.....9-11 and similar acts would be and are

Acts of Aggression thus automatically authorizing acts of DEFENSE not just
morals or law enforcement.

Not slamming you buddy, just 'covering the bases during the rainstorm'.

thank you my partner is safe he was not in the path of the tsunami thank you for the info

I'm glad to hear you found out your partner is safe. I just came on and you already got your answer, thanks to ElmyDonnstad.
Hang in there.

They're in for trouble tonight: near-freezing temperatures, possible snow flurries, all where over four million people have no source of heat, many of them still on the move as the evacuation perimeter for the nuclear plants expands.

God help them.
