It's a personal decision, I wouldn't want anyone to "Out" me. Celebs are people too, lol...they deserve privacy.

Definitely not, everyone should be entitled to privacy.

The only correct answer is a simple "NO". It's up to the individual to "out" himself/herself and no one else's business.

I'm pretty amazed that in this whole thread, most people chose the individualistic route(privacy, individual rights, choice...."it wouldn't help anyone, or the world"....so it is up to themselves)...

We are hated, oppressed, killed, and discriminated against as a group...GLTB...why wouldn't having alot of people, most of us, be proud and fearless? what's wrong with nudging people to tell the world about who they are?

Idealistic ,sure, but we have had a pro gay movement for awhile now, and it has helped....why not expand and carry on, with heads held high?

I don't know how easy for you it was for you to come out. But for me it was a difficult thing and you need to understand that for some people it's going to be hard. And whether it helps me or not I want to be respectful to others. Call me stupid but I was always taught to be selfless and it's always seemed like a good thing to keep up.

oh, falconfan,..... I remember you from this site discussing the same question a few years ago....

I'm sorry your coming out was so hard for you....I think I understand....it took 27 very painful years to be "free" (and 10 years of therapy...all that Catholic mess, and being told I was a sinner, and being hated and being beaten up).....

I'd be respectful of you personally, if I knew you....an acquaintance, a bud, a friend....you know... work it all thru....

but for the American and the World stage, and the heavy consequences....well....no...

I remember when my gang of friends were very young in the party years of San francisco.....amazing....we were popular and we hung with a (sadly late) Hollywood manager named Bob Lamont (sp)....he was a dog.....I never accepted those pair of pants....

what I recall was that he was John Travolta's manager...he told that young homo star to hide his personal life, move into the Hills, keep it all private, and....you'd be a star...good advice...it worked.....if that's what you want....

I never wanted ,ever, to lie ,generally, or about myself....it's a good idea.....it has carried me through some very hard, very sad decades...

head held high, ya' know....

It's rather odd that many of the same people who advocate outting celebs also feel peoples HIV status should not be made public.
There are probably several reasons but one is job protection.

That's great but that's YOUR decision to make. If you never ever to to lie than don't but you can't make those decisions for other people. You just can't. People are different and their lives are their own.

There's no such thing as "outing". People discuss other people's lives all the time, whether they are gay or straight. Why on Earth should be continue not discussing them while continuing to discussing the lives of straight celebrities? Are you saying that if we discuss so and so dating a person of the same gender publicly, we're outing them? Whether the person wants to come out publicly and confirm it, is their business, but there is nothing different between talking about a person who's dating a person of the same sex or the opposite sex. If that is a problem, then we should be discussing whether we should be talking about anyone's personal life. That's not going to happen, so we can continue to talk.

I understand why up and comers don't come out of the closet early on in their careers. However, those who are established, should definitely come out. It's a moral obligation. Gay people need to be visible as to confirm their existence. It is important for the progression of society. I'm looking at you, Jodie Foster!

Politicians who vote for a bash gay people, should be publicly outed, with all media attention on them. CALL A PRESS CONFERENCE! OUT THE BASTARDS! :=D:

Excellent, herewego! I would almost follow this board more often just to hear more of what you have to say... the key word being "almost"... lol

But still nice to hear from someone who has the common sense to see the pathetic double standard so many gay people buy into. None buy into it here, though, at least... :p

I said No, but to be honest they need to come out it will be better in the long run

Well I would say it would make it easier to discuss celebs here, but I think it would be there descision (they are people) as much as is seems they aren't sometimes they are...Sure I would like every celeb I like to be gay. Same goes for that hot guy at the counter in the store or that hot doctor or that hot guy giving me my pizza...You wouldn't force them to out themselves would you? No really would you I doubt it...at least I wouldn't.(*8*)

I vote yes/no

yes because they chose a life in the public eye, no one forced them into show business/politics and if they can't stand the spot light then they need a different profession.

no because they have a public life and should have a private life and what they do behind closed doors should not in the public view.

Celebrities have a right to privacy? Please. They became public figures knowing full well that their private lives would come under close scrutiny. It's part of the price you pay for being rich beautiful and famous. People are going to talk talk talk talk talk in any event and there's nothing anyone can (or will) do to stop it. The only thing you can do as an individual is choose to ignore it.

In the end, it's safer to assume nothing said about any celebrity is completely true. How sad, though, that a group of PROFESSIONAL LIARS called the publicity machine chooses to have us believe that the most talented, beautiful and famous people in the world can only be heterosexual.

very good points, especially about the liars.....actors are liars to begin with, because, their job is to not be ones self, but to portray another character (and no matter how multifaceted the actor....they are on the whole reading lines, written by someone else).

this sets up the fantasy world they live in , that we have grown to love and imitate, and dream of....our culture is so much about fantasy and dreams.....and the guardians, players, promoters do NOT like that fantasy fucked with.....truth and exposure are anathema.....

Hollywood tought America to lie properly, and to believe the lies, and how to spin (Washington learned the lessons very well).....the really evil players are the spin doctors, publicists, and media pundits, who all avoid the truth as much as possible.....there is ALOT at stake here!!!! if you cooperate you get really good material possesions, fame, and in the case of the celebrity, maybe an Oscar (isn't that right Ms. Kidman?).....

I love a good escapist film ,or TV show.....but it's just that... escape....not to be misunderstood as reality....

going back to the charming Cruise family, Tom was on top of the world when he had the best publicist in Hollywood, Patricia, keeping his fame and celebrity afloat.....when he sank deeper into loonyness, he fired her, and hired his sister.....no pro,..... not smart....poor Tom has really fucked with his carreer...oh yes, by the way he is straight....haah.....

and don't get me started on Miss Oprah!!!

alot less lies and liars, will really help the world to see things for what they are, and hopefully make things better....nice hopes for 2008

Nope..

Unless they are one these people who bashes gays in front of the camera, but perform blowjobs behind the camera. They are the ones that need to be outed for their hypocrisy.

See and it's just this kind of ridiculous that shows why "outing"" shouldn't occur. Because looking at your personal "knowledge" it's a completely mixed bag of well known gay icons, to people I think we can all say are probably in the closet, to people where this little or no evidence. As one gets so obsessed with outing the bar of proof is just gradually lowered. I think the odds are pretty damn good that at least one of the people you've decided is gay or bi isn't and you're continually harassing and bothering at least one person for no real reason. And where does your decision that Daniel Craig is gay come from? The fact he wants Bond to have a male love interest? If you support gay rights and aren't a female pop singer than you MUST be gay right? This is really teh message we want to send? We want to repay people for their open mindedness by persistently asking them a question they've answered again and again simply because we're not satisfied with the answer... really? really? You want to help gay rights? How bout you leave Jodi Foster alone and spend that time campaign for a local pro-gay politician or becoming one yourself.

I'm pretty sure people knew how to lie properly long before Hollywood ever existed.

It's amazing how many people try to blame Hollywood for society's problems when society has existed long before Hollywood. Hollywood does not and has never existed to educate; Hollywood exists to make money. If you have issues with people lying and deceiving, look at the people around you.
