  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Should I buy this?

I'm gonna cut this short, I had a feeling discussing materialism with americans wouldn't lead anywhere.

Okay, now you're getting stereotypical. And I'm gonna quote you, sweets...

"I'm starting to get a bit sick of all the materialistic threads, it does nothing to disprove certain stereotypes IMO."

Isn't that what YOU are doing? Setting a stereotype by painting all "Americans" with the same brush?

Buy the tee shirt, Mr. Lunacy.

I had one of those, and you wouldn't believe the number of "smockin' hawt" guys who'd come up out of nowhere to hit on me whenever I wore it. Yeah, at Wal-Mart, at the laundromat, at the post office... I tell you, I had to fight 'em off with a stick. We're talkin' 100% STR8 boys too, like you wouldn't believe. One of 'em he was even an extra in that movie about Alexander the Great, remember? And one was an accountant, I think.

Of course, we lost everything in that tornado, so now it's just me 'n' my BF in donated tee shirts (thank God Americans aren't materialistic and will help others who are down on their luck).

Yeah, buy the shirt. You won't regret it.

It's not a temper. It's exasperation. I don't think I've yelled in about a year, no real point. People don't react well.

And I consider racism being offensive about where someone was born. Whether technically, it means that person has to be a different colour, I don't know. In my opinion, it's heritage that is involved with racism, and you're criticising and stereotyping people of a different heritage.

Phobos was the greek god of fear, might I point out, not prejudice. Where does your statement imply that you're scared of Americans? Xenophobia is the term for fear of strangers, technically.

And frankly, since xenophobia is also used as a fear of extra-terrestrial beings, I thought that racism was a better term for it.

I don't really care, since you've used such things to avoid answering my question.

And I'm in university right now, so okay, I'll stay in school. Whatever. And your point about continuing the argument applies to two people. Are you suggesting I'm arguing to myself, and that your responses are somehow outside of this thread?

EDIT: Whoa, meant to post this ages ago. Left to go to the loo, thinking I'd posted it when I hadn't. Things moved on a lot in that time :)

Quote where I say all americans are materialistic. I simply said discussing this with americans (the ones here, to be specific) would lead nowhere. And look where we are. This is RL's thread, so if we must carry this on, start a new thread and I'll be happy to go to it.

Oh, not to worry. Your discussion may well have rescued this thread from the hellish depths of Fun & Games! :p

Exactly. And you're being stereotypical by saying that. You're basically saying there's no point in discussing anything intelligent with an American.

What does one's nationality have to do with the ability to discuss a certain subject? I certainly don't take nationality or race or anything else into consideration when discussing a topic with someone.

That was a blanket statement.

I'm not trying to pick a "fight" with you, I'm just giving my opinion to what you said. And that's all.

And RL, pardon the hijack, but I couldn't resist.

You said it, not me. The real meaning behind my statement is that there is no use in discussing materialism with people from the same country that gave the world Walmart.

I didn't mention race, the other guy did. And in this case, I think nationality has something to do with it. Some countries rely on natural resources or manufacturing for their economy, but places like Canada and US rely a lot more on consumer culture.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you either, but so long as you give me something to respond to, here I am.

And I as well am sorry about the hijack, my posts don't usually garner this much attention, it was unforeseen.

And thus continuing the stereotypes. When a stereotype is created, its because people are assuming that everyone in a certain situation is the same. So, by assuming they they're materialistic just because Wal-Mart is from there, you're carrying it on.

This is how all forms of stereotyping popped up.

After all, the stereotype of camp gays didn't pop up for no reason. It exists because there are some camp gays, and people are assuming we're all the same.

I'm really gonna have to stop reading this thread, I can't help pointing things out. It's part of my personality.

OMG, sweets, I think we should just discontinue this right now, lol. That's another blanket statement that truthfully doesn't make much sense. You're stereotyping again.

Bigtime.

These things, I'm afraid, will blind you to opening your mind to intelligent conversation, so I'm gonna bail this now and leave you be. But the exchange was fun ;)

Can someone please tell me how this thread transformed itself from a George W. Bush t-shirt question into a discussion about materialistic Amish Québecois?

That is freaking hilarious. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Buy the shirt RL! If it wears out, use it as a rag eventually. Or, you could wipe with George Bush's face and throw it out!

I've always wondered what he'd look like with shit on his face....

another? I thought it was the same. Isn't it typical to say "stereotype!" and duck out of a debate without really addressing any points...

Anyways, have a nice day :)

Probably quite similar to usual, considering how much butt-kissing he must have to do to get any level of support from other politicians, when he's a fool himself. ;)

:D Couldn't resist that comment!

Oh wow, you've given me a great idea! I'm gonna start a toilet paper company that prints the face of George Bush onto every sheet!

And every time there's a celebrity who becomes rather hated, the next design would appear! Hell, we could even do requests from people who've had a messy break-up, etc. Oh wow.

Okay, fine. What, exactly, are the points you want addressed?

You tell me and I'll do my best to address them.
