Should we be forced to acquire a license to have children?

I know this is going to be hugely unpopular, my saying this, but so many people here locally have a brood of kids and do nothing but live off of welfare. It's all I ever see in the grocery store, and my own cousin is planning on living off of welfare when her baby arrives. She got preggers just cuz she really wanted a baby, ignoring the fact she was in med school and now cannot finish, or the fact the guy that impregnated her is jobless, had no impact at all on her.

Oh gosh. My cousin used to say that if she got pregnant by her 37-year old, jobless, car-less boyfriend who already had two kids, she would be happy. She even told me they didn't use condoms. She's a waitress.

I forgot to mention this guy is indeed 10 years her senior, is divorced, and already has a 6yo daughter. So yeah...my family is all so Very proud of this lil unblessed event...LOL.

I mostly don't care if people reproduce in spite of their lack of responsibility or intelligence.

However, giving birth is the most devastating act a person can inflict on our precarious environment.

Licensing is a sensible solution given our circumstances. There are compelling reasons to place restrictions on our freedom to breed.

The only way to do this would be via chemical castration, however at the moment, temporary chemical castration is only permitted for a maximum of 24 months at a time due to the unknown effects of long term use of the drugs used. The main thing though, is that chemical castration reduces sex drive. It doesn't render the person infertile. So would be pretty pointless as a weapon against pregnancy.

That said, it seems a little one-sided that ANY couple can have kids, but those wanting to adopt have to jump through hoops to get one. There should be some form of check on everyone wanting to bring a child into the world.

Actually, he wasn't disagreeing with your opinion, he was taking offence at you telling him to think before he speaks. He obviously HAS thought about it before he spoke about it - otherwise he wouldn't have said "I get the point" and "I do believe something like this is necessary". I too believe that something has to be done to control the world's population and the fact that each generation at the moment seems to be worse than the last. Whilst castration is somewhat extreme, I believe it's about time that people were made to realise what a responsibility it is to bring up a child - especially when some parents seem to struggle to tie a shoelace or pick their nose!

Oh, and if anyone is going to tell a member to "Shut up", it certainly isn't you. Your 'I'm going to tell it like it is and fuck everyone else' approach is getting tired.

i feel that it's out of place for people to decide that other people shouldn't have babies or not. that's just foul. to me, that is no different than telling someone that they can't get married because they're gay, telling someone that they can't sit in the front of the bus because they're black, and etc. people should be entitled to their civil and natural rights and having kids is one of them regardless of who the sperm or the egg comes from. just because a parent is fucked up doesn't mean that their kids will suffer the same fate. then we go into the whole idea of parenting and etc which is a whole different issue altogether. hell, there's many people that come from screwed up households that come out to be productive citizens and many people that come from a two parent, love filled household that come out to be billy bad asses and fuck ups. the parents have a part to do with it and then it's the individual.


and if that's how you feel about me telling him to shut up and that my whole "tell it how it is" gimmick is played out to you, then that's cool. i'm just going to keep being me because that's who i am. love it or hate it.

I've been saying this for years. People really should not be allowed to have children unless they get a license. My way would be unless you meet certain standards (economic, health, employment, etc) you'd face certain penalties (fines, welfare reduction, child taken away, jailtime, etc).

Sounds like the people in my town and on the first they have 5 kids at the store being bad with a cart full of food. I support a license to have kids and a kids limit. Its just crazy how people are popping out kids and have nothing to show for im not saying get a masters degree or anything just get a decent job and a decent house.

Article claims 60% said yes, but impossible to implement, in a poll asking the same question. While 32% said something had to be done.

Leaving a wopping 92% in favor of licenses.

Only 6% said no.

But only refuji mentioned the one reason this might be a good idea: culling the gene pool. Where there are genetic diseases that scientists say could be wiped out if the genes were removed from the population, a decent argument could be made they should not be allowed to reproduce, for the sake of future generations.

But licenses to have kids, just because? Idiotic notion.
