I gave up watching them after Crash won best picture. I have a moderate interest hoping that Colin Firth will take best actor but I don't think it is going to happen. Also I would like Meryl to win best actress but I think she will lose again -- so I'll be watching a homo movie instead.

By the time the Oscars come around, there have already be 423 awards programs and isn't it all a bit anti-climactic?

The Oscars:

Watch successful people which you never met in life win an award and get publicity, while you sit at home and fart in your couch.

i'd like to see a CAREY like scene, where the Oscar auditorium doors lock shut and all that hairspray coated hair in that silly place catches fire and burns itself out.

.

Yes. Yes I do.

i couldn't imagine an event i care about less.... except every other award show ever created.

If they really were about rewarding "best picture" or "best actor" it might be fun.

but they're just about Hollywood in a big circle jerk as they congratulate each other for being SO much better than those common folk. They show lots of clips of movies while they applaud themselves for being super-humans. They watch endless montages of old movies as they remind the world that they're much more important than those awful reality show stars.

Then they give awards who whomever spent the most on the gift bag for the voters who are a bunch of homophobic jerks whose average age is 72.

I'd rather take a big shit and then turn around and look at that. At least it'll be shit I made and not shit made by some stuck up Hollywood loser.

Operafan: You and I are in total agreement. To deny "Bareback Mountain" best movie was one thing....but to declare "Crash" the best movie was simply adding salt to the wound. I have hated the hypocracy that is Hollywood ever since. To watch that bunch of pompus asses parade before the cameras and tell the world how great they are is just too much

Phony people giving phony awards to phony actors.

They might as well hold a press conference this year to announce the winners.

Pretty much all the winners are already known shoe-ins.

I can't believe this -- but I actually agree with Jasun for the first time. I would add that the movie industry has gotten too political with most movies having a "message".

Whatever happened to simple entertainment?

What would you tell little boys or girls that dream one day of winning an Oscar or wanting to act?
If you choose a profession because you want to win an award, you misunderstood what work is.

^^You are absolutely right.

But there's not an actor living who doesn't crave those little trophies.

^^If those awards were given with complete objectivity, I'd agree with you, but, as often as not, they aren't.

They are often awarded because of popularity, sympathy, timing, to make a political point or a host of other reasons.

No one in the industry believes Sandy Bullock gave the "best" female acting performance of the year.

But many, many people in the industry love her, and they feel it's "her time."

nonsense. in any field there's always cachet and pride that comes with being recognized as an innovator/leader from your peers. acting is no different. it's human nature to want to be validated.

Only to the extent that the collective wealth in the audience would probably pay off the national debt.

Then again every penny THEY have was voluntarily given them.......

Lucky7, you have a severely over-sentimentalized view of what the Academy Awards are all about.

But if that gives you pleasure, it's all good.

But it's really just an excuse for a big party, where everybody pats one another on the back.
