  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

So, anyone care about the Oscars?

I only watch it because it's live TV and anything can happen. I love those moments when things go wrong. Even just one can make the 4-hour show worth it. One year they tried to do a special effect of 3 animated Disney characters sitting in an actual row of the theater. It worked, but then a seat filler (a black lady if I recall correctly) sat down in the seat that was occupied on-screen by Minnie Mouse. She just sat there smiling, having no idea she was being broadcast around the world. The image of Minnie sitting in her lap was so bizarre we couldn't stop laughing about it for 20 minutes.

I'm sorry I missed that. I remember the year Jack Nicholson accidentally farted during his acceptance speech for "as good as it gets." The look of shock and disgust on Frances McDormand's face made that year's snoozefest worth sitting through.

I always think some of these women who win technical awards and can't fit into their dress are going to have a slip of the tit.

Kathryn Bigelow taking out Director & Best Film is LOVELOVELOVE

Hurt Lock is an amazing film, sure Avatar is a visual feast but Bigelow's film got the kudoo's it deserved. Was really good to see Mo'nique & Bullock get the oscar nods they deserved, as well as Chris Waltz. Jeff Bridges fell on deaf ears for me, but besides that every winner was really good!

i was so happy to see michael giacchino win for his score for "up." :)
Me as well...

In retrospect, "Up" and "The Hurt Locker" were my two favorite films...

Of course, they couldn't be more different from one another, but both of them succeeded in what they wanted to do and delivered what they promised...

Well, with 3 hours to go.... anyone want to do predictions?

Cock on a block time:

Well, glad I didn't bet real money on most of these things!

For my next bit of psychic energy, I'll have a crack at Spain for World Cup 2010 (even though my heart always wants it to go to The Netherlands). Wonder if this time they'll finally get it right...

Was the Oscar show at least entertaining? I couldn't be arsed to watch the telecast at 3am local time, but it's shortened to a mere 3 hours for a rescreening tonight. The choices are gym normal time, first 90 minutes of Oscars be buggered; or gym early (and queue and fight for machines and weights with the rush) and watch the full show.

In other news, there was a spectacular thunderstorm in Cpt this morning at about 2am which I did get woken up by and watch some of.

Haha she was a deer in headlights at the end when they handed her the second Oscar.
yep

I thought she was going to pass out....

You gotta give her credit. She's Cameron's ex, so I'm sure she has enough money, and yet she has the balls to continue in and make her own artistic statement...

GOOD for her !

yep

I thought she was going to pass out....

yeah that one guy was like holding onto her arm the whole time steadying her so she didn't fall over lol

but yeah that's a great achievement being the first female to win best director.

Totally watched Sandra's accept. speech again, she was so humble. Not the best performance, but I think it was more a commendation of her career, which has seen some really good quality from her (Premonition, The Proposal etc).

Hoping for the same variety next year <33

To the original question.

No.

I wanted Monique to win for supporting actress but I have to say that I found her acceptance speech a bit snobbish. She acted like it was a given she had the best performance and that there would be something wrong with the Academy if she hadn't won.

Didn't watch the ceremony as its way too boring for me. I was rooting for Streep though and as usual, she did not win. Bridges was a justified win but best picture should have gone to Avatar.

I found it interesting that not one political joke was made from the White House to the Court House. That has got to be a first time in a generation! I rather liked it that government and politics were left out, but at the same time, it sure was obvious considering all the crap going on these days! And with Martin and Baldwin at the helm....they must of had to practice hard not to spout out even one.

I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I was a little disappointed that they left out the Original Song performances and kept that horrible Origing Score interpretive dance nonsense. Steve and Alec were weak as host, imo.

Huffy is already on it . . . .

Farrah Fawcett Left Off Oscars 'In Memoriam' Tribute Montage

One big name that didn't appear in the Oscars 'In Memoriam' tribute to actors and filmmakers lost in the past year was Farrah Fawcett, who died last June of cancer at the age of 62.

The segment is generally dedicated to film stars, and while Farrah was best known for her role on the television series 'Charlie's Angels,' she also lit up the big screen in movies such as 'Man of the House,' 'Dr. T and the Women' and 'The Apostle.'

also Farrah's first starring film role was opposite last night's Oscar winner, Jeff Bridges in "Somebody Killed Her Husband."

I think my favorite moment was during the speech by the winner of the best foreign language film.

He said something along the lines of, "I want to thank the academy for not considering Navi a foreign language..." (A shot at "Avatar", of course...)

After he said that, they got a shot of James Cameron and I swear I thought he was going to shoot laser beams out of his eyes... If looks could kill that guy at the podium would have keeled over right then and there...

The joys of Hollywood ! ..|

I agree, the Oscars are a reason for friends to get together, print ballots, bet $5 your going to win, and depending the size of the party, have a fun evening drinking, trashing all the celebrities, and win some money. I only got 14 right out of 25, so I did not get any money this year, but had a fun evening and it was worth being exhausted all day at work today.

Avitar is the only movie this year I saw more than once and enjoyed it as much the 2nd time, it deserved more Awards, but everyone in the Academy thought taking in $2.4Billion was award enough.

1- why the John Hughes segment...bigger names than him died last year
2- the dance number to original scores was a total waste of time.
3- why the 5 person testimonials for actor and actress instead of just last year's winner reading names and showing clips.
that being said- I got 17 out of 24 right :)

1- Because of the age factor he and his actors represent
2- every couple of years the producers haul out dancers....they have to work, too
3-I wondered that, too. Brought out more actors to be seen, but did little else but draw out the night.
