Soccer World Cup 2010

Yeah, the England goalkeeper Green made a howler and let the ball slip through his hands into the net. #-o

I actually feel sorry for him - you KNOW the British tabloids are going to have their knives out, right?

It would be difficult enough for him WITHOUT having to deal with the usual hoardes of populist anger.

I still tip both England and the USA for progressing to the next stage. ..|

It didn't slip through his hands, he just made a very basic error of having his hands badly positioned to accept the ball; they were too close together and too closed, which meant the ball hit his thumb instead of just going into his hands. Basic error.

England doesn't have any decent goal keeper. I don't think they'll do that well in this tournament.

We do have a decent goalkeeper; Joe Hart. He's just "inexperienced" and a "rookie" so someone who was more experienced and wouldn't make silly, basic errors was picked in his place.

Seeing that Green was in goal instead of David James, I thought, "that's a bit of hubris from Fabio Capello." Turned out just fine. :p

James wasn't able to play due to struggling with a knee injury, if he was fit he would have been in goal instead of Green. And James being James it makes it strange to sya this but; If he was in goal he wouldn't have made that basic error. Trippy O_o.

Slovenia get past Algeria. :=D: They weren't even expected to be at the World Cup.

No Michael Essien is a big blow for Ghana. :(

Well, that ^ wasn't the game changer.

The needless handball by Serbia and a beautiful PK by Gyan of Ghana was! w0w!

Ghana 1 - 0 Serbia

Ghana's goalkeeper Richard Kingson did an excellent job today! :=D:

holy shit, that handball gave a new meaning to needless.

Anyways, on to the, hopefully, first really entertaining match! (besides England-USA maybe..) Go germany! (!)

Hey guys

With just 2 days to go, I'd like to bring in some pictures and team news and stuff to make this thread really informative and up-to-date - would it be okay to do all ...

blackbeltninja, I always enjoy your posts but this time, there's something missing... last week's Bafana Bafana parade in Sandton, Johannesburg ;)

Apparently expecting 40 - 50k, it seems the turnout was closer to 250k people! :=D:

It was waaay to hectic for us (like most companies, we let the staff take time off if they wanted to go cheer Bafana on) to actually get into Sandton, but here is a pic (not mine) taken from Sandton CBD. The atmosphere was electric for literally kilometres around as loads of people took to the streets to celebrate.

Half time and it's already Germany 2 - 0 Australia.

Socceroos missed a golden opportunity at 3:00 on a corner. #-o

That referee is so obviously Pro Germany it´s unfair.

He didn't mark that penalty, and the red card was unfair.

If I were to play soccer again at seventy I want it to be more interesting for me. So I found this picture, and I said, "Shep, this looks like fun!" Here is my seventy year olds view of the game we love so well.

And I want to be the guy tacking the other man from the rear. Now go down man, and forget the crowd. You are not touching that soccer ball.

A very old man's view!
Shep+..|

An undeserved red card for Tim Cahill. :grrr:

Until that red card, I had thought the officiating in this Cup was good. Let's hope this was an isolated occurrence of poor judgment by referees.

Jake,
Thanks for admiring my full of life status. It is more like a perpetual hard on, and seeing grown men in soccer uniforms gets my juices flowing. But being athletic, I also like the game of soccer.

So I declared June 12th Rob Green Day in the USA to honor our new affection for the English goalie and his gift on Saturday. I hope you look at my thread, and you would make my day by posting. I believe not very many realized it is a soccer thread. Or I offended every Englishman on the globe.

As to the officiating, I hope most or all of it is top drawer.

Here is to you!
Shep+

Haha cheers.

My bad - since we didn't get a Bafana parade or a warm-up and none of their WC fixtures in Green Point I figured I'd leave it off... nah, kidding. Truth be told, I forgot to add it!

Netherlands vs Denmark Kickoff 1:30pm at Soccer City, Soweto (Johannesburg)

125px-Royal_Netherlands_Football_Association_Logo.svg.png

My uber-favourites are probably tied with Spain as football's biggest disappointments, having only won major honours once in recent times (Euro 88.). Defeated twice in the finals, in '74 to Germany and '78 to Argentina, as well as the 98 semi-finals to Brazil, the Netherlands always look a worthy prospect on paper and never perform when it counts. Hopefully this time will be different, with a fit-from-injury van Persie up front and terrifyingly skilled Arjen Robben running amok in midfield again after his recent injury scare. Add to that more than competent teammates such as Gio van Bronckhorst, Welsey Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel and the squad is as strong as any Dutch side has been. As with Argentina, however, the proof in the pudding is not so much in the eating as in the cohesion. When it comes to technical ability, vision and skill the Dutch could rape any team out there; whether or not they actually do has always been another story.

100px-Danish_football_crest.png

The Golden Generation of Danish football peaked in 1992 with a surprise Euro 92 win. IIRC, the Danish had not even qualified for the tournament and were given a wildcard entry taking Yugoslavia's spot after the civil war broke out in Bosnia. However, the talent of Peter Schmeichel and the Laudrup brothers among others saw off all challengers. Those times are long gone - they failed to qualify for the 94 World Cup and the 2006 World Cup with strong enough showings in between. The current squad has only a handful of household names in it and most of them are in their own golden years. The Danish will need a surprise upset against the Dutch if they are hoping to progress to the next round.

Prediction:
I hope I don't jinx my beloved Orange, but I'm calling it Neth 3-0 Den

Japan vs Cameroon
Kickoff 4pm .za time in Bloemfontein/Mangaung

100px-Japan_national_team.png

This is the first match at the Free State Stadium in the Orange Free State province, between the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Samurai Blue. Japan have qualified for the last three tournaments as well as co-hosting in 2002, but have rarely impressed. They are up against a well-drilled Cameroon and will need nothing short of a miracle to get a result this afternoon.

100px-Cameroon_2010crest.png

The Indomitable Lions are in their 6th World Cup after missing out on a ticket to the 2006 finals. Every player in the squad is based in the top leagues in Europe at present and the side should overcome the Japanese with some ease on paper. Talismanic captain Samuel Eto'o is coming off the back of a sterling season with Internazionale having completed another Champions' League win with the Neroazzuri.

Prediction: Cameroon 2-0 Japan

Italy vs Paraguay

100px-Paraguay_football_association.svg.png

La albiroja take on reigning holders the Azzurri in the evening fixture in Green Point. I will be there :D wearing my retro France '98 Italy supporters' t-shirt in the pissing rain and howling wind, so they'd better fucking win. PAraguay are playing their 4th consecutive World Cup and have made the 2nd round twice in recent tournaments. They had a good qualifying run, finishing only 1 point off the lead and in third only by virtue of goal difference. Apart from Italy, though, their group F is comparatively "easy" with the numbers made up by New Zealand and Slovakia, countries whose football prowess is really in its infancy at present. Goals if any will probably come from in-form frontman Roque Santacruz.

125px-FIGC_logo.svg.png

Italy are a football powerhouse but have often been thwarted early on in tournaments and frequently seem to have a slow start. However, each squad member is top-class and playing in the top clubs in the top leagues in Europe, and the Italians are never not a handful. The current squad is a finely-balanced mix of youth and experience, with the ability to score goals coming from almost any player on the pitch explaining their 4 WC tournament wins.

Prediction: Italy 1-0 Paraguay
