Songs That Shoulda Been Massive Hits

In the U.S., I'm speaking. I realize Madonna is popular elsewhere.

As for "Ring The Alarm," it's a slow crawler. We play it here, and it's doing well on Urban and Rhythmic. For some reason, Deja Vu's mediocre success (quick rise, even quicker fall) set the mood. Pop radio only played DEJA VU because it was Beyonce, a stellar radio hit-maker. Her songs just don't fit the format, according to research. I personally LOVE the song, but it took awhile to get used to. Also, the yelling parts for the chorus don't help her mainstream success. The songs she's released so far, including her third single "Irreplacable" lack that pop quality that made her a solo success. Her new record is an aquired taste, and I think in the long run, the song will be successful - hopefully.

But to answer your Billboard question - her digital single rocketed the single into the Top 20, but airplay alone didn't help it increase. That mixed with the decreasing downloads of the song made it so that the song cannot rise to a higher position.

As for Madonna - I think Hung Up was the poppiest she got with this record. The rest, lyrically were horrendous, and also the 'dance' genre she went for just didn't catch on here. Foreign markets eat it up because they're more dance-oriented. Americans like to dance, but not to Madonna's odd lyrics that a 4-year old is capable of writing. She's come up with better in the past, and I just think her U.S. fanbase is decreasing because of it. If she had an album with songs like "You'll See" and "Take A Bow" and "Music" and "Ray of Light" there would be no doubt in my mind she'd have major radio and commercial success.

Madonna just doesn't have appeal any longer. People are turned off by the fact that she uses pointless media stunts to market herself. I think she has an okay voice, but as others have said, her entire Confessions album sounded the same. 'Hung Up' only did well because of it's sample and it was pretty catchy - a good pop song. 'Sorry' and 'Jump' are just...nothing. People know she is capable of better and has given better than what we're receiving. Our listeners simply DON'T want to hear it. We go by majority rules here. We play a song, and its basically a we like it, or we hate it, and even 'Hung Up' got a 50/50, so we played it but not often. She's just not radio friendly. She's just totally not with the program anymore. I miss the old Madonna, personally.

This, and coming from a professional deejay no less. And yet you have Paris Hilton and the talentless Simpson sisters on your list of underplayed artists.

No further comment needed.

And that's all based on YOUR OPINION. Yet our LISTENERS want to hear them :) We don't pick what we play ;)

And since when are media stunts, talent?
I never once said Paris had talent. And the SImpson sisters, thats just an opinion, as was everything I said in the post you quoted. And the majority of our listeners don't want to hear Madonna. Why is that such a big deal to you? Radio jocks can't have opinions? Most radio jocks don't like Madonna. But that doesn't mean we won't play her music if our audiences want to hear it.

I think anything P!nk releases should be big. All her songs are awesome. Yea her most recent album hasnt been doing that well. But thats ok the real fans will buy it. Who Knew should of been WAY bigger then it really was. I love the new song U and Your Hand but the video sucks and has nothing to do with the song. They NEED to release Dear Mr. President and MAKE SURE its a good video.

Paris Hiltons album is really good actually and once they remade a video for Stars Go Blind alot more people (at least in my area) liked it alot more. I love the new song but the video RUINS it. Its doing really well on VH1's countdown.

All I am going to say about Madonna is that simply I dont like her music. I like her sound from the 80's and thats about it. Confessions On A Dance Floor all sound the same to me.

Some random songs I think should of been/be massive hits are:
-So scandalous - Mis-Teeq (the video was actually on TRL for a while)
-Everytime We Touch - Cascada
-Chemicals React - Aly and Aj
-Doin Too Much - Paula Deanda
-Low - Kelly Clarkson
-Damaged - TLC
-Let It Slide - Joanna
-She Said - Brie Larson
-Wrong - Kimberly Locke
-Welcome Home - Brian Littrell
-Have A Little Faith In Me - Mandy Moore
-Sick Inside - Hope Partlow
-S.O.S - Rihanna

-Everytime We Touch - Cascada
-Doin Too Much - Paula Deanda
-Low - Kelly Clarkson
-Damaged - TLC
-Wrong - Kimberly Locke
-Have A Little Faith In Me - Mandy Moore
-Sick Inside - Hope Partlow
-S.O.S - Rihanna

Some great picks! I see you live in Baltimore. Did they not play SOS or Everytime We Touch there? They were massive hits nationally in airplay. The rest are AWESOME songs that I agree should have been played more. We ARE playing the new Kimberley Locke song, "Supawoman". Well, it's not THAT new but hey, we're one of the only stations playing it. WOO ha

As for Madonna - I think Hung Up was the poppiest she got with this record. The rest, lyrically were horrendous,

how you can say that whilst having a Mariah Carey picture in your signature is beyond me.

I agree with Rhianna's SOS. It was definitely better than Unfaithful which was played WAAAAAAY too much last summer.

Also have to say Pink's Dont Let Me Get Me was underrated, as well. A LOT of Mizunderstood was glossed over. Mainly because it didn't resemble Pink's initial offering of R&B/Pop. It was more Pop/Rock and people aren't open to change. But I loved all the singles from Mizunderstood. Pink's a great lyricist. I knew that from Can't Take Me Home.

uh...S.O.S. was a number one hit...how much bigger do you expect a song to be, unless it goes into negative numbers??? i don't think unfaithful hit the top ten.

and tavares, mizunderstood was a 10 million seller in the u.s. alone. albums don't get much bigger than that.

i think he's saying mariah's lyrics are inane also. which they are. the difference is, unlike madonna, she has a voice. but they both annoy me.

I dunno. I guess the things she releases to radio can be taken that way, but there a lot of great songs like Outside, Petals, Close My Eyes...but yeah, she does have some of those simple lyrics, but those are in the minimum. Guess thats why theyre pop hits lol. I'm just glad she writes her own stuff, unlike 99% of artists out.

Unfaithful was a #1 hit as well. It was her biggest #1 to date.

Mariah Carey is bland. Every single album is exactly the same. She is not original, she never takes any risks. She is doing exactly the same thing she was doing in 1991. Her lyrics are dreadful.... she has no personality in any of her songs. Just because she sells records doesn't make her good. Oversinging doesn't mean somebody has talent. McDonalds makes billions a year but that doesn't make it good food.

2 other groups that should be/have been way more successful than they were are Placebo and Garbage.

Alrighty then. That's your opinion, but I don't agree with any of it. Not everyone has to like her :)

maybe you'll think i'm nuts but i loved this song when i was 10 and i love it now, LOL. love her horrible, unwatchable version of the running man. i think i even laughed at it then. but the song is soooo catchy.

OMG SOMEDAY!!!!!!!! <33333333 I love her trying to dance LMFAO That was such a classic MC moment! She is such a DORK lol. Come to think of it, that entire video was pretty stupid. But, one of her megahits!

don't you just wanna shoot yourself when she dances? and how about little mariah throwing a tantrum when the boy passes her in the hallway, LOL. it's some kinda classic.

alright, i don't think this was a big hit, i just discovered the song on youtube (the greatest thing ever, but not better than JUB of course) and it's a great fucking song...

I'm not talking about sales... I'm talking about how Pink herself should've been bumped up a couple of notches. Instead she was overshadowed by Britney Spears.

LITTLE MARIAH <3 That was the main reason I loved that video lol. I wanted to date her cause I was that age when I discovered Mariah and so I thought that girl was soooo cool I wanted her to be my hag (j/k, gay wasnt even known of when I was that age lol)

I laugh everytime she tries to dance. I just love her dorkiness. She does some of the dumbest things and I can't help but love her more for them.
As for it being a hit, it was a big #1 record for her both on radio and on sales.

As for PINK, I agree, she was completely overshadowed by Britney, but she did make a huge name for herself. Unfortunately now, she's got SO MUCH competition that just didn't exist during her second album.

i totally think mariah is talented and how someone could say all her singles sound the same totally blows my mind. mariah is big like she is because she is talented and her songs/albums break records. but yeah heartbreaker sounds nothing like fantasy.. so this is crazy... but off that subject.
i agree with whoever said that sophie ellis baxter should be hot over here because her music is awesome.
also paris' album should have sold tons more, but she is picking the wrong second single to back the first one up.
which i believe is still doing well on the charts..
anyway i think once paris releases a couple more albums and does a tour it will help her out.
