STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Sept. 2) - Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a suburban Atlanta Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.

At 61, if he has no criminal history, he'll probably be required to apologize and get a fine, community service and an anger management seminar.

Now, if he has a criminal record, he better prepare for some time in the pokey.

While I don't condone what he did,
there's been times when I've felt like doing that myself.
And while he was at it, he should have slapped the mother, too, for good measure.

I've been at public libraries when there's been kids crying, running around and screaming like they're at a playground, teenagers laughing and yelling, people talking full voice on cell phones.

Y'all may be reading new reports about me slapping someone someday...

Given all the poor parenting in this country, I wish we had more people like that guy, who simply takes matters into his own hands if the parent isn't going to do the job themself.

This guy deserves a medal, if anything.

Did some of you even read the item?

After he repeatedly struck her, she began screaming.

So I don't think his strategy exactly succeeded.

Adults who use violence against children aren't heroes, they're bullies.

I think its funny that the man actually had the balls to slap the kid. I'm sure many people think in their minds "I'm gonna hit that kid if he doesn't shut up" but he actually did it!

Anyways if that were my little sister or something i would of gone off on him.

Wow, if he slapped my child he would no longer have a dick to play with.

It isn't your child, so don't touch her. Simple.

I think if someone hits someone elses child that isn't their own, then the parents have every right to legally kill the motherfucker in anyway they see fit.

the mother is the one who should have been bitch slapped, the toddler should have been comforted...shitty pissy diaper and vomit coated outfit and all.

:eek::eek::eek::p:cry::cry::cry:

Hilarious. Fucking wal-mart. The typical mouthbreather wal-mart shopper just let's their children's mouth run on like a fucking human alarm. I've always wanted to just slap someone, usually I'd want to slap the parent though because they don't do shit to quiet their child/give it attention.

Are you kidding me, people?

Some guy grabs a 2 year-old and smacks her across the face and we're okay with this?

Do we know the situation at all beyond what has been reported?

Did you NEVER cry in the store as a child?

Is a 2 year-old not allowed to get tired or frustrated and just be 2?? That's what being a toddler is all about. The kid doesn't deserve to be slapped.

I'm honestly very surprised that some here are defending this guy.
I'm not really surprised.

Most of these relics forget they were once children themselves. Not to mention no one should hit a 2 year old child. They can still barely talk.

If it wasn't a little girl and a two year old at that, I probably wouldn't care as much. But she's just a baby, what he did was way out of line. If he did something like that to my niece, that old man would've got punched out. Now if it was some snot-nosed 12 year old brat, I would've laughed first then said book the MF, because you still can't do something like that.

Have you been drinking ammonia?

For all this man knows, the kid could've been autistic or had some other condition. His ignorance is only superceded by your ignorant praise.

I don't like people who chew loud so does that give me carte blanche to go around slapping people? Do we get to do that anytime someone annoys us?

Having some random stranger strike you as a two year old can be damaging but of course none of that matters because here in America the only thing that matters is the comfort of the individual, no matter how you have to knock upside the head to get it.

If he doesn't like crying children he's welcome to shell his sorry ass in his apartment and avoid the outside world altogether. What a sorry fuck. Oh, and so is the guy you're exalting.

Which wouldn't matter anyway. She's 2!!!!!!! There's no scenario where that would be acceptable.

@ the bolded part: according to my mom and dad, I never was a noisy child and was quite well behaved for my age. Though that didn't stop me from shutting down a whole store (another story, lol).

@OP: I dislike how the guy went about it, if I were him I would just go to another side of the store or just leave. I like that he got arrested for this, you just don't go up to a strangers child and slap them silly!

I am not a fan of screaming kids and I would rather have the parent keep the kid at home, if not with a friend.

If I were a child and saw this face, I'd scream, too:
