Even if it's on clay!?? Clay makes tennis a lot of fun. I like it better than any other surface
 
Masters series in Rome is looking like a good one, but don't forget the girls over in Germany!

Oh and btw, Congrats to Kimmy for winning her first tourny of the year! Whoot!

But seriously, When watching women's tennis, I find it both bitchy and boring and have little patience with it. On the other hand, to play mixed doubles is always a pleasure.

It's all one's own point of view. When Andy is throwing a hissy fit at the chair umpire, I thoroughly enjoy the theater. :badgrin:

By the way, I wish he could be coerced into playing strip tennis.
 
I love watching the girls just as much as the boys... as far as the tennis goes! I love watching the power and mostly offensive tennis from the boys, but at the same time I love to watch the girls because it seems like they are better at working a point than the boys. It seems to be a smarter game instead of a more power game. I love it all though! And who doesn't love a good Andy hissy fit!?

I would pay good money to watch Andy and Lleyton play a nice "friendly" game of strip tennis! Throw in Nadal and Ginepri and we'd have a doubles match worth my life savings!
 
Yesterday over in Rome. Monfils took Andy Roddick out and Almagro nearly did the same to Federer. And this weekend we are going to see lots of hot stuf from Nadal. It is great to see this new generation of young players moving up.

Andy will do fine once he gets onto the grass. But yesterday, to put it mildly, he was not happy. ](*,)
 
Fantastic tennis in Rome today when Nadal beat Federer in a very close 5 set-5hour match. These two guys are just so much above the rest of the competition. check the websites!

While all this was going on, I was out playing tennis in ideal, cool weather but at an infinitely lower level of competence. This time my serve was on and won all three sets. A different outcome from a few weeks ago.

I really enjoy the game both as a player and a spectator.
 
Over in the WTA Hingis lost to Mauresmo in the quarters before she bowed out to Henin-Hardenne in the Semi's. Nadia Patrova continued a very impressive clay court streak by beating Henin in the finals.

With Nadals win he tied Villias Clay court streak record. All he needs now is one more match (which will come in the second round of the next tournement) to own a new record.

All the while I was also out playing tennis in not so ideal, extrememly hot and retardedly played without sunblock. The center I play out of held a tournement and I played in it. I won on Friday night, 6-4 6-4. EARLY the next morning I won 7-6(2) 6-7(2) 6-3. I got 45 mins of rest and went back out midday to win 4-6 6-3 6-4. At this point I looked like a lobster/tomato hybrid. I got up this morning and played in the finals and took it 6-0 4-6 6-4! I did it the hard way, but I did it!

A great weekend for tennis allround. Congratulations on the win! :=D: :=D: :=D: Very impressive but you really had to work hard for it. Playing in the heat is not so bad as long as one can sip water and not get dehydrated but at this time of the year it takes some getting used to the strong sun. I should use sunblock more but don't like it when it gets in my eyes. I prefer floppy hats.

Would have loved to have seen the final over in Rome. Followed the end of it via the scoreboard and even there it was clearly a cliff-hanger. Both players are nothing short of amazing; each in his own way.
 
The Australian author and critic, Clive James, once wrote a wonderful poem, "The Sweat of Gabriella Sabatini". The poem was an adoration of the very beautiful Argentinian tennis player whose birthday is tomorrow, 16 May. (DOB 16 May 1970).

Perhaps somebody could write a poem in adoration called, "The Left Arm of Rafael Nadal."
 
Wow, I totally didn't realize Fed and Rafa pulled out... they were in the draw when I went to work this morning... oh well.

Guess we got "Ljubi" as the top seed, but he's hardly the favorite...

As for Andy... pretty cushy draw for him last week in Rome, but a surprisingly good showing nonetheless... which is gonna make his 2nd round loss at Roland even more disappointing. Acasuso, anyone?
 
I was sorry too that the Rome final was not shown over here. However, it won't be the last time we see these too slogging at each other. If they both get to the French Open final, we will see that, as I recall from last year. **wars** Great tennis ahead!

I gather by the grapevine that ARod went back home to "recover". I imagine him out on his lake in that noisy speedboat of his, annoying the canoeists and other mild creatures. It was a bad choice as he had a real chance of picking up a title. As it is, he will drop a place in the rankings. It was similarly stupid for him to miss China at the end of the last season when Federer was not playing his best :cry:. I don't think he's interested in doing anything more than fulfilling his tournament obligations on clay. It will be "all or nothing" when he gets to the grass at Queens and Wimbledon (!) (!) . Again, exciting times ahead.

Also impressive in men's tennis this last week have been the young players. As well as Nadal, Almagro,Monfils, and today, Andy Murray, have put on great showings. Gasquet, though, disappoints.

Meanwhile, the rest of us slog it out on the home courts. Congratulations to Havoc on his tournament win last weekend. Hard work was rewarded! ..|
 
They did play the Federer/Nadal match on The Tennis Channel. I don't have it but my mom does. I saw the first set and there was some great tennis being played. Everyone should call their cable or satelite company and tell them you want the Tennis Channel. Lord knows I've bugged Directv about it plenty, lol.

I would love Federer to win the French Open but it seems like his chances keep shrinking. He did manage to take care of Nalbandian in the semi's (which was also a great match btw). Nadal has to be the heavy favorite going into the French though.

Who do you think would be the favorite on the womens side? Petrova has a nice streak going on, and you can never count out Henin-Hardenne on the clay. Clijsters has voiced her recent distaste for the clay, but is a two time finalist at the French. Maresmo (whom I do not like) will probably be the top seed, but always manages to choke at her home tournement. We haven't seen too much from Pierce since the year end finals, but she did come from no where last year to make it to the finals. Davenport and Sharapova have a small chance on the clay, but come Wimbledon their numbers will go up. Hingis is no stranger to the clay and could really surprise everyone if she was on her A game. Not to mention the hoard of Russians and up-and-coming Chinese girls. I think this is a wide open tournement for the girls. My hope would be Clijsters, Hingis, or Davenport (because it's the only one she's never won).

What's everyone eles thoughts on the guys and girls chances at the French?
 
Can't help here, Havoc. Little interest. Things just haven't been the same since Steffi Graf retired. That lady had (and still has) style. Nobody like her playing the pro tournaments now. :cry:

On the men's side, I think Federer will get it but anticipate another hard fought final with Nadal. Often the deciding factor is which one has the easier time in the quarter and the semi-finals. In Rome, this was clearly Nadal and it may have given him the slight edge.
 
Good postulating, Havok, and I totally agree with you about the men's side... it's really hard to see anyone beating either Rog or Rafa, especially since Federer beat Nalbandian last week and he's always given him a ton of trouble (for the record, Nalbandian still holds like a 6-5 lifetime edge over "old Rog").

The women's side is way more open, but for the first time ever, it's REALLY tough to pick against Petrova. She's never been one of my favorites, but she's beaten all the big players on clay this year, with the exception of Kim (who should do well, but not enough to win, I don't think... too bad, too...) and she's also a two-time Roland Garros semifinalist, too. If she's gonna win one, it's gonna be this one. She's got the pedigree, she's on fire, and of all the Russian girls (excluding Sharapova) she's really improved her mental stability (though 7 titles in the past 7 months does a lot to improve that, too).

Also, don't quote me, but I seem to recall reading that Lindsay was most likely not going to play Roland this year and concentrate more on Wimbledon. I could definitely be wrong, but I won't be surprised if she doesn't show up. Davenport on clay = clumsy clumsy. And I like her, too, but she won't win, sorry. Kim won't let her beat her again if they meet, and Pierce or Sharapova or Mauresmo or Petrova or Dementieva or any number of other quality clay-courters would be able to fell the giantess.

As for Mauresmo, as if her expectations from the French crowd weren't enough already! Now she's got the "defending Grand Slam champion" label on her head, to boot! I'm just musing, but I think she's gonna make a LOT of French people unhappy (again) when she goes out well before her ability level should take her... shades of Ivanovic last year, maybe.

So what am I saying? Haha, no idea, it's such a tossup, but I still think Nadia's got the game and the right lead-up. We'll see how she does in Rome this week, but she's my pick. Also, look for Hingis to outperform a large percentage of the field; she's been impressive so far (not counting the Williams match). I'd say back-to-back Grand Slam quarterfinals might be in order! ;)

Okay, so while I don't think anymore that I had read at one point that Davenport was going to miss Roland Garros, it appears that as of today, she will. While I didn't see her as a threat to win the title, it will be sad that she won't be there... seeing her try to conquer the clay year after year was (if not just a little amusing) always pleasant, and I appreciate her attempts each and every time. Just because she's kind of a waste of space on the terre battue hasn't stopped her-- not the way so many Spaniards and South Americans have refused to play on the grass for years. Lucky for them, the clay court season goes through October.

I agree with the Captain in the missing of Mrs. Agassi, but I love the girls playing now. Steffi was an AMAZING player and no one has dominated womens tennis the way she did since.

I agree with you on a LOT of things, Testudfan. Davenport is one of my favorites and I would really be routing for her at the French (if she was playing it), if not for her saying that she'd rather have another Wimbledon title than the French Open title. I think she knows where her strenghs are and I respect the hell out of that.

Petrova is really hard to bet against right now. She's done what no one else this year has done, dominated. It's only been a couple months, but that's more than we've seen since Kims hardcourt season last year from any of the girls. The only thing that I think could possibly work against her is the amount of time she's spent on the court. She's not used to playing the whole tournment in every tournement that she enters. I'm not sure if she's in Rome this week or not, but unless she takes a quick break to get herself in order before the French, she may not be as strong as we've seen her in the last couple months.

I don't know what it is about Mauresmo, but she just doesn't impress me. I don't get excited when she's on the court. Everything she does well, someone else does better in my mind. Henin has a better backhand, Hingis is smarter, Davenport hits the ball better, and Clijsters is a better defensive player. I guess it's good that she has a nice variety, but she just doesn't excite me.

As of now I'm going to have to totally agree with testudfan with the Allez Kim! But if not Kim than Allez Martina!
 
That last sentiment echoes mine precisely :-D and I also have to echo my love for Steffi Graf, the reason that I started playing tennis in the first place. Why my sn is still testudfan confuses me, but it's been that way for a long time, so meh. But I digress...

I do like Mauresmo, but Havok has a great point: all the things that the commentators love about her are indeed done by someone else much better, and it's not like she has unflappable mental fortitude.

The "too much tennis" point for Petrova is well-taken, but I think back to last summer and how Kim played four straight weeks and won three tournaments and still was fit enough to outlast all her opponents (and demoralize Pierce in the Open final) so I think Petrova's capable of being fresh since she will (I assume) get a week off before Roland begins. And yes, Havok, she is in the (somewhat decimated) Rome draw with only two people in the draw (Kim and Martina) with any shot of even taking a set off Nadia, IMHO. But I agree there is a line... if she wins Rome, too, will all this tennis be TOO much? (Last year Justine won four clay court tournaments leading into Roland, too, but I would submit that she is-- Aussie Open final notwithstanding-- a fitter play than Petrova.) I'm VERY anxious to see what becomes of the next Grand Slam fortnight!

Seriously... I sound like the world's biggest Nadia fan, which is for sure not the case at all, but Kim and Martina aside, she's maybe the most deserving of it at this point. I do hope she doesn't pull a Justine and complain herself off the court with a "sick tummy". Blegh.
