Thad1527 Appreciation Thread

^Didn't go. Wasn't up to it.

But I'm going to hockey tonight! My underperforming Nashville Predators are visiting my overperforming New Jersey Devils. Yup, two teams I like. Should be fun.

Happy Thanksgiving, Thad! (*8*)

I hope you enjoyed your hockey game the other night. Knowing you, you've probably already taken in another game, or some other interesting event by now.

Thad's New York Bar Crawl

Sometimes I do some pretty surreal things.
Last Monday, after the Devils hockey game in Newark, NJ, I thought I'd go into New York and visit a bar or two. (I'd considered this before leaving home; it wasn't totally spur-of-the moment.)

So I hopped on the PATH train to NYC, changing at Journal Square in Jersey City for the train to Christopher Street. My plan was to start at Ty's, an old-school gay men's bar.

Ty's was busy. I didn't think I could get a drink without a long wait...and then I'd have nowhere to sit.

So I checked out Marie's Crisis Cafe, a very mixed piano bar which is great fun when not too crowded. It was too crowded. I didn't even go in.

I roamed the neighborhood, considered the Stonewall Inn, but the Monster was across the street and was not crowded at all. I sat by the piano and caught Kenny Allen Smith singing and playing. People came and went. It was fun, but after two beers (unhurried) I felt it was time to move on.

I continued down Christopher Street, past Pieces, which was packed with a drag contest. I wanted to go to the Boiler Room on the Lower East Side, and had a little wifi difficulty before my phone gave me directions. It involved a subway ride for two stops. And, unfortunately for me, the Boiler Room was closing at 2 am. Many NYC bars are open until 4. But I hurried, got to enjoy a beer, caught the last of karaoke night and met the host. I want to go back sometime and fully enjoy it. It was my favorite stop of the night.

But it was 2 am...where to go? Ah, the infamous bar The Cock was open and just up 2nd Avenue. There was a cover charge but I was OK with it...
Turns out it's a backroom bar, or sex club. I was oddly detached and considered it a "look but don't touch" situation. Nobody came on to me, anyhow. But it was like live porn being two feet away from a really hot fuck. My inner voyeur was thrilled. Would I go there again? Probably not, but I certainly know what to expect.

The first train home leaves after 4 am, and there's another after 5. I decided to walk to Penn Station even though there was plenty of money on my MetroCard. It was a cool clear night and I'm always excited having the city streets almost to myself. I stopped at a 7-Eleven for coffee, took my sweet time, and missed the train after 5. The next train was at 6:20 so I had way too much time at Penn Station.

But I got home, slept almost all the day...and didn't tell anyone of my adventures. Until you, now.

Good Wednesday morning, Thad! (*8*)

It sounds like you had quite a night in Greenwich Village, bar hopping after the Devils' game. I hope your trip to Washington to see the Capitals turns out (or turned out?) well for you.

Good Wednesday evening, Thad! (*8*)

I'm sorry the Capitals game didn't turn out so well, but glad the Utah game was much better. You dared to wear an Utah jersey in the Flyers' home arena? I've heard that people who wear visiting team hats and jerseys at the Philadelphia Eagles home games get a lot of grief.

It was just my Utah Hockey Club hat, which I bought in Target in Salt Lake City that trip. Since Utah is new, there were maybe three people with any Utah gear, including me. Hockey fans aren't football fans anyway. They may tease.

Good Friday morning. Thad! (*8*)

It sounds like you had a good time taking the train to Alexandria, VA, and touring the city there. I hope you've got something going for you, maybe another hockey game, or concert, or maybe yet another trip somewhere.

It's time to hibernate. I bought $45 of groceries and am ready to stay in for days. Well, maybe an occasional local outing...and I will go to a surprise birthday party Dec. 28.

Merry Christmas, Thad! (*8*)

I hope you are enjoying your hibernation at home, I take it that you've decided not to go anywhere for a while, and. take it easy.

Happy New Year, Thad! (*8*)

Yeah, it seems some people are a bit too eager to take down their Christmas decorations. I've made a rule that I leave mine up until at least January 6, or Epiphany. That takes in the 12 days plus 1, old style.

Good Sunday afternoon, Thad! (*8*)

I see you’re going to be in a television audience Thursday in New York. Should be lots of fun.

Yeah! I've been to The Daily Show before and it's one of New York's better shows for audience members. Maybe fewer giveaways than some daytime shows, but few delays.

Good Thursday morning, Thad! (*8*)

I'm glad you had a great Flyers Pride Night. So you're going to Toronto to watch hockey there? Should be a good time.

I didn't go to New York for the Travel and Adventure Show. Even though I had complimentary admission, I didn't want to spend on train fare and food when I have my own travels and adventures coming up so soon!

Good Saturday morning, Thad! (*8*)

I hope you had a great time at the hockey game in Toronto. You'll have to fill us in the next time you get a chance to post.
