Thad's Hockey Corner

There's been a lot of buzz about Luke Prokop, Nashville Predators prospect, coming out as gay. I'm pleased he did. I wish him well. But he's young and with no NHL experience. I hope he comes out of training camp strong and lands a spot with the Predators. But it's likely he'll spend some time in the minors. Nashville's main affiliate is the AHL Milwaukee Admirals. Milwaukee did not play at all last season, due to COVID concerns (Charlotte and Springfield did not play, either, and there were no Calder Cup playoffs.)

As for MY next-season hockey dreams? I've booked flights to Las Vegas and Los Angeles in late October. The Oilers and Islanders will be in Vegas during my stay, and the Canadiens and Sabres will play in Los Angeles during my visit there.

And I bought a ticket to the Golden Knights - Islanders game in October, and made reservations at the LINQ hotel-casino.

I bought tickets to the Sabres-LA Kings game on Halloween, and the Devils-Anaheim Ducks game Nov. 2.

I'll probably get a ticket for the Oilers-Golden Knights game in October when the team puts more on sale this Thursday.

Awesome! I’m so excited for the new season to start.

I'm getting excited about next season!

I'm going to Pride Night at the Pittsburgh Penguins November 16. Even though I don't much like the Penguins...I do like Pittsburgh so this is a great reason to go. They're playing Buffalo, which used to be a great rivalry until the teams were separated into different divisions...and the Sabres turned perennially lousy.

The Predators returned Luke Prokop to juniors. He'll probably see lots of ice time with the Calgary Hitmen. If all goes well, he'll get a callup from the big club.

I expected his relegation to get more experience. Juniors is probably a better place for a young player than the AHL.

I'm in Las Vegas! Saw two Golden Knights games over the weekend, and they lost both. The Knights are missing captain Mark Stone and veteran Max Pacioretty with injuries. It shows. The Knights' passing and puck control was off. And it didn't help that on Sunday they faced an awesome goalie, Ilya Sorokin, of the Islanders. Sorokin had a shutout.

I'll see two NHL games next week. Buffalo at Los Angeles next Sunday afternoon, and New Jersey at Anaheim Nov. 2.

The Kings won Sunday's game, 3-2. Buffalo looked good and seemed to have better puck control. But Los Angeles seemed to keep pushing more, and it paid off.

Last night I wore my Devils jersey to the New Jersey Devils - Anaheim Ducks game. Oops.

The Ducks won at home, 4-0.

Veteran goalie John Gibson did his job perfectly. Veteran Ryan Getzkaf, the Ducks' all-time leading scorer, was on his game. Troy Terry scored twice extending his points and goals streak.

At the beginning of the season, many hockey writers were down on the Ducks. Based on last night, they were wrong.

I really liked Honda Center, the Ducks' home. After the hoopla of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and the cool distance of Staples Center in Los Angeles, it was fun to be in an arena where the game is the thing. But then I had a good seat in Anaheim, 12 rows from the ice. I was in the upper deck in Vegas and LA, and it seems far from the action with THREE levels of luxury boxes between in LA.

I'll see two games this week! Tomorrow the Boston Bruins visit the New Jersey Devils. Tuesday I'm headed to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins host the Buffalo Sabres.

I'm certainly living my best hockey life.

Pride Night at the Penguins was last night. They did it right.

There were lots of rainbows. Both teams wore warmup jerseys with rainbow numbers. So cool - I'd love one, and they're being auctioned for charity, but probably too costly for me.

I bought the t-shirt.

The game? Great. The Sabres' goalie, Dustin Taroski, was fabulous and the Sabres won, 2-1.

In the past, I've said I didn't like the arena in Pittsburgh. I now find it OK. The staff was friendlier. Exiting was easier (I remember blocked exitways). Sightlines are great. But the scoreboards don't provide as much info as other places. And there are few, although BIG, bathrooms...I prefer more smaller facilities.

My next scheduled game is at the Islanders' new arena in December. And I bought tickets for Dallas Stars Pride, Feb. 23.

I watched the Flyers on TV tonight. They lost to the Lightning, 7-1, and have now gone eight games without a win.

Yikes. And this was with the Lightning missing two world-class players, and using their backup goalie.

Thursday night, I went to see the New York Islanders in their brand-new UBS Arena. It's a spectacular facility, on the grounds of Belmont Park racetrack.

The sightlines are great. It's an expensive place. $17 for a beer. Yikes.

And the Islanders are slumping. They haven't won yet in the new building. Thursday's game must have been especially disappointing. Nashville scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left in the game.

I do like the Predators and was glad they won...but my wasted youth was spent as an Islanders fan and I hope they can turn things around soon. I don't like Islanders' goalie Semyon Varlamov; he's experienced and capable, I just don't like him. I DO like the Islanders' other goalie, Ilya Sorokin, who I saw win in Las Vegas in October.

Since I have some time and money, I'm going to see the New York Rangers on Friday. I haven't been in Madison Square Garden in years; it's expensive and I hate the Rangers. But it's time. The Rangers are winning this year. And I do love the Rangers' Mika Zibanejad. They're playing the Vegas Golden Knights, who have a good record this season- but I've seen them twice, and they lost both times.

Well, the Rangers lost last Friday in a shootout. The overtime was the most exciting five minutes of hockey I've seen this season, but great goaltending at both ends stopped all scoring. Laurent Brossoit of the Golden Knights was especially noteworthy.

The shootout had only one goal (by Golden Knights' Jonathan Marchessault) of the six shooters.

The trip reinforced that I hate the Rangers.

Madison Square Garden, despite renovations, is the oldest arena in the NHL. It shows; sightlines aren't as perfect as other buildings and access/egress is more difficult.

But it WAS "Garden of Dreams" night. The Rangers DO good for kids and the community. Gotta love that.

COVID is throwing a loop to hockey. Lots of postponed games and positive cases. I have no tickets until Feb. 23, in Dallas. That's after the scheduled Olympic break. Heaven knows if THAT will go as planned.

No Olympic break! That means the Russians will win gold in Beijing...if the Games go on.

The NHL is dealing with cancellations and postponements, but the worst seems past.

I listened to the afternoon games today. Nashville and Florida won big, hooray! I will watch the Winter Classic from Minnesota this evening and the Flyers - Kings game late.

And I will see Dallas play the Devils in Newark Jan. 25. I love getting special e-mail offers.

I'm new to hockey and just got the ESPN+ to watch the Avalanche. I saw a few guys on there that I just had to have more, but I know nothing about what I'm watching!

Just keep watching. You'll get your opinions!

I haven't seen this season's Avs in person, but they look good on TV. I'm not much of a MacKinnon fan because he underperformed when I did see the Avs. .but I know I'm an exception. I like Makar a lot.

Thanks for stopping by my corner!

Hello from Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils. After 2 periods, the Dallas Stars lead the Devils 4-1.
The Stars scored in the first 20 seconds of each period so far. Joe Pavelski has 2 goals and an assist.

Last night was Pride Night at the New York Rangers. I saw the Rangers beat the Los Angeles Kings in a shootout, 3-2. I still hate the Rangers, but respect their support of Pride Night.

Attendance tonight in NJ is low. A Tuesday night game against a mediocre non-division opponent doesn't attract casual fans. The Devils are having Mental Health Awareness Night tonight and although I support it totally that's not much of a draw either.

Glad to see that you are able to enjoy yourself. It sounds like the weather didn't interfere.
