Thad's Hockey Corner

Tonight I'll see a rescheduled game in Philadelphia. The Detroit Red Wings will be in town.

It works for me. I haven't seen the Red Wings yet this season, so it's a chance to check them out. If the season ended today, they'd just miss the playoffs.

Okay, this is weird. I've been to 14 NHL games this season.
I've seen 14 different teams win.

Next week I'm going to see the Winnipeg Jets at the Dallas Stars. I've seen the Stars win. But I saw the Jets lose.

Will the streak continue? (Disclaimer: Don't bet either way!)

Nice, 14 games so far this season! I haven't been to a game in a while now, but living in AZ there isn't much incentive to go. I miss going to games when I lived in Minnesota.

I'm in the middle of my Midwest hockey swing. It's been fun.

Thursday night I saw the Flyers crush the Blue Jackets in Columbus, 4-1. Neither team is making the playoffs this year but it was still fun to watch.

Friday and Saturday I saw games at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. I hadn't seen a game there before, although I had seen and touched the building before. It's across from the Amtrak and Greyhound station; when I had to make a connection once I crossed the street to see.

The Blues are good and in a playoff push. They beat Minnesota 4-3 in overtime Friday, coming back from a 3-1 deficit. They did not quit.

Saturday was a rather odd 6-1 Blues victory over the Islanders. There were no goals in the third period.

Robert Thomas is the best hockey player who was under my radar this season. He was a star of the game both nights. Although he was on the Blues' 2019 championship team, I didn't really know him. I do now.

And I won't do sports betting, but I'd consider this Blues team Cup contenders.

Tomorrow it's on to Chicago. The BlackHawks host the Los Angeles Kings, who need a win for playoff positioning. The Hawks are out of the playoff picture but I'm sure they'll try to be spoilers.

I love United Center in Chicago and look forward to returning. Enterprise Center is LOUD. Not just enthusiastic fans; the music and announcements are at high volume. The arena is nice enough otherwise. I sat on opposite sides for the two games and preferred the view from section 233.

The playoffs are on!

I was surprised the Lightning swept the Panthers in their second-round series. I did see the Lightning win once this season, and they're playoff-proven. But the Panthers won the President's Trophy...and then got shut down.

The Battle of Alberta sure is interesting. Anything could happen tonight.

And the Blues are still alive, hanging tough against Colorado. I hope they can pull it off.

Almost pulled it off! But, alas, end of season for my Blues. It was a hard-fought series though and I am proud of them.

St. Louis turned me into an Avalanche fan this postseason… impressive, considering that I’m a Red Wings fan normally

Awe thanks! I do like the pic. Probably too much.

I've already got my ticket to see the Canucks in Columbus to play the Blue Jackets Oct. 18. It was the shockwave news of the off season when Johnny Gaudreau chose to sign with the Blue Jackets. I want to check this out early in the season!

I'm working on my bucket list, too. I've seen hockey in every NHL city, except Seattle. I'm going there in December, and will see the Florida Panthers there.

I'm excited about a normal upcoming season. And I've bought tickets to the Chicago Blackhawks' home opener vs. Detroit Oct. 21.

The new season is on!

I saw the first two Red Wings home games in Detroit. The home opener featured a goaltenders' duel, with a scoreless first two periods. Rookie Elmer Soderblom, who is 6'8", scored his first NHL goal to put the Wings ahead. They then scored TWO empty net goals vs. the Canadiens, for a 3-0 win. Ville Husso, who the Red Wings just signed from St. Louis, got the shutout, but Jake Allen from Montreal also did a stellar job in goal.

Last night the Los Angeles Kings won in overtime in Detroit, 5-4. The Kings could have won in regulation, but could not put the puck into an empty net in the final minutes. The Red Wings tied the game but Philip Danault of the Kings scored his second goal of the game in overtime. Very exciting. Worth the trip.

And tonight I'll see the Vancouver Canucks as they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus is starting the season slowly and their star Patrik Laine is out. Johnny Hockey (that's Johnny Gaudreau, whose signing with Columbus was the shocker of the NHL summer) had better step up.

The Columbus game went to overtime as the Blue Jackets got the win. Poor Canucks. They had a 2-goal lead at some time in each of their first four games. They haven't won yet.

My fourth game this season was another overtime thriller. The Blackhawks battled back to beat Detroit, 4-3. Nobody is expecting much from the Blackhawks this season, so it was fun to see their grit.

And then there was my fifth game, San Jose at Philadelphia. The worst so far. The Flyers played and won the night before in Nashville, and they had no energy left. They had a goal called back due to offsides, and that killed all momentum. James Reimer did a fine job in goal for San Jose. But when the Flyers pulled their goalie trailing 0-2 with 4 minutes left ..well, the Sharks scored before I could say, "This will not go well."

Although I watched hockey on TV, and will likely watch tonight, my next in-person game is next Sunday when the Blue Jackets visit the New Jersey Devils.

My Buffalo Sabres are doing well with a very young team! (average age is 25)

I am so impressed!

Last Sunday I saw the Devils clobber the Blue Jackets, 7-1. It was by far the most dominating performance I've seen this season. The Devils?! Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt have grown into their strength. And the defense! The Devils goalie has it easy. I'm impressed.

I saw the Flyers beat the Senators on TV tonight. The Flyers are overperforming. I like it. Carter Hart does NOT have it easy, but he's doing his work well.

Hello from Seattle! I've now completed an NHL "bucket list." I've seen home games in all 32 NHL cities. (There are five arenas I have not seen games in yet; they're replacements for other arenas I have been to.)

Seattle's arena is nice. I had probably the worst seat in the house Saturday but it was still OK. Tuesday's seat was much more to my liking.

But apparently I'm a jinx to the Kraken. They're having a good season, 2nd in the Western Conference. But I saw them lose to Florida, 5-1, and to Montreal, 4-2. Although I rooted for Florida, I did want the Kraken to beat Montreal.

Hi Thad,
I grew up in Denver, but left for school a year before the Avalanche arrived. I adopt them as my team, even if it's a bit of a stretch. Frankly, it depends on how hot the goalie is, and I don't know what happened to last year's, but I miss him. I've watched a lot less ESPN+ without him! Sorry for not using the names, I am TERRIBLE at remembering hockey names.

Last year's Avs goalie was Darcy Kuemper. I like him too. But he signed with the Washington Capitals after winning the Cup.
The Avs' current goalies are Pavel Francouz (meh) and Alexandar Georgiev, who I like a lot. He's the only NHL player born in Bulgaria. But he learned hockey in Russia. He played last season for the New York Rangers.

I'm watching the Maple Leafs - Red Wings game on ESPN now and rooting for Detroit. Detroit leads 2-1 halfway through.

Next Monday I go to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins host the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks have Trevor Zegras, a rising young player...and not much else. Pittsburgh may not be as great as in the past, but they're still a probable playoff team.

I'll probably go to the Penguins - Senators game Jan. 20 as well.
