I get so pissed off when I hear Bush and other Republicans bang the family values drum.
One of my first posts on JUB was regarding the Bush family values, and went something like this:
Dubya is a recovering alcoholic and former cocaine abuser.
Laura was acquitted of vehicular manslaughter charges in a Bush friendly venue.
Both daughters were busted drinking underage with phony IDs.
Brother Neil was neck deep in the Savings & Loan scandal. (Some theorist beleive Daddy Bush led us into the first Gulf War to divert attention).
Many beleive Jeb pulled the strings to throw the Florida votes.
Since then Big Barbara made those callous remarks about the Katrina survivors lodged in a sporting arena.
Since then Newts adultery has been exposed plus a host of other immoral and illegal activities on the part of Republicans.
Yet they continue to tout about their partys' "family values" and the lemmings continue to follow.
"Beam me up Scotty! I'm drowning in bullshit here."
An example of "Do as I say and not as I Do" on steroids.

That's one of the reasons I know so much.

And one of the things I know is that a mother and father raising a child is not necessarily an ideal situation. Sometimes a mother and father raising a child is a nightmare, and very often a single woman or man or two women or two men is a healthy situation. Depends on the people, not their gender.

Now that you dropped the over-generalization, I can see your point -- a good one.

But I think the original use of "ideal" was in the sense of "the ideal", as in, what would the most beneficial situation for a child to be raised in be? and holding that a father and a mother together is an element of that. On that I agree -- but having a brother who is a foster parent, who the case workers call on to take kids who have been abused by other foster parents, I'm very aware of just how wrong the "ideal" arrangement can go (like the pentecostal-type church elder and wife... and the wife often put out her cigarettes on their little foster girl, right through the clothes).

So another way to say it is that not all families are anywhere near ideal, meaning that while they have a required aspect, they don't get close to the ideal. And some are so darned "not close" I wonder if maybe Tarzan wasn't better off.

I have two thoughts about that.

First: as far as your last line, I can think of a number of Democrats who fill that bill as well.
Second: darned tootin', pardner! (My version of a Texas affirmation).

Every time I hear a politician start in about "family values", my thoughts go to the old Gypsie recipe for fried chicken: first, get a chicken. So much that they do doesn't even value families, and they're preaching about family values? Get real.

I knew a Lutheran pastor who had a solution for parents who wouldn't consider divorce (which should only be an absolute last resort): separate houses. He insisted one couple do that or he would turn them away from communion, since they weren't dealing with things, just being hateful, turning their kids hateful, making the neighbors and half the church elders miserable....
So the dad asked the boys where they'd like to live, and the menfolk got a house on the outskirts of town and left the original house to the mom and girls.
Within a month, the kids' grades went up, their behavior changed like dusk to noon, the church elders weren't getting phone calls anymore at all hours... and when the next church potluck came, that family sat together and were smiling and happy.
Six months later the parents were dating....
Two years later they decided to move back together, and it all went to hell in under a month. So back they went to separate houses. Mom and dad went out on dates, the kids excelled all around; the womenfolk dropped in on the men's place once a week to clean and such, and the menfolk dropped in on the women's place to do yard work and repairs.
It remains in the top few weirdest things I've ever seen -- a two-parent family in two houses.
There's the real reason "no-divorce" policies/beliefs are damaging -- not many pastors or priests are creative enough to try new ways of making it work.
And I think that there's a reason a lot of people don't want to see gay couples with kids: they're afraid that might work.

LOL -- now I'm trying to picture a family with Ann Coulter as mom... working.

This is a good story. I had an aunt and uncle who got married 5 times....to each other. This might have worked for them. lol

There are way too many variables to reasonably conclude that the gender of one's parents is what determines an "ideal situation."
