  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

The climbers who died in 2019 are memorialized here

I don't think they are of the same guy.

They are the same guy.......ballcaphair sent some of those images to me via PM.
It's only very recently I deleted a PM I received from willhunt who was truly devastated by the death.
I was shocked as ballcaphair had sent a PM only days before....... :(

I don't doubt that some of the images came from Ballcaphair himself, but he wouldn't have been the first user on JUB to pass off other people's photos as his own. I still don't think all four images are of the same person.

So I wonder how Andreus is doing these days?

I focused on certain aspects of the face, like nose and eyes, and they looked nothing alike.

I find myself questioning characters more often around here, and caring less because of it.

Indeed, the proliferation of falsity on the web has led to a growing cynicism, making what was once a useful means of expanding one's world into nothing more than an arena for games and role play.

So I wonder how Andreus is doing these days?

The skeptics would argue that he's alive and well, just as the subject ex-member of this thread. And of course that is not to say he isn't among us an posting under a completely different persona.

The difference is that one is ensconced among the Garden of Memories by the website while the other is in some Purgatory of doubt by the way the site has treated the subject nowadays.

The appearance is that the site doesn't know how to deal with the forums. We're an inconvenient truth, or in this case, perhaps an inconvenient lie.

I saw Andreus at Christos in Minneapolis last week. He was enjoying a bowl of avgolemono and he looked well. He was with a woman and two small children who looked just like him. Life goes on, I guess.

^My god. The conversion therapy worked. He said his father threatened to send him.

Again. I still haven't received an answer. What's the point of rehashing this yet again a year later?

Are we going to do this every year on the anniversary of his "death"?

That's the beauty of free speech. You don't have to have any justification to choose a topic. You just discuss what's on your mind, and if you're alone in being interested or vested in it, your conversation will sink beneath the waves without responses, and be on Page 2 in no time.

We've all created dead-end threads.

But to keep popping up to say how disinterested you are seems a bit disingenuous. The thread had interest. People posted.

There are plenty of salacious threads and comments posted sheerly to shock people by blaspheming or desecrating sacred images or concepts, but I don't go rushing into them every two seconds to tell them they're being naughty little boys and a tad obvious.

I posted the thread NOW because I had to wait over 10 months to find the update to the dead climbers memorial that is only annual. Not having an obituary is fairly common, if statistically uncommon. Not having any civic report to the news of an accidental death is also common, but still most accidental deaths are reported in print locally, even if not by name.

But, given the connections to the advanced climbing community, it seems really amiss that our member wasn't reported dead to his colleagues, or that it even could be kept from them.

And, as I noted earlier, the whole business was a pretty angry slugfest for all the wrong reasons last year. It shouldn't have been. There should have been an acceptable way to ask for some objective evidence of the terrible news.

And, out of respect for those who were upset by it all, I didn't perpetuate the argument during the last year, but waited to address it when the magazine published its list for 2019.

I don't see why Jason should have to justify starting this thread. If you think it contravenes the CoC, tell the mods. If you just don't like it, walk away. There are plenty of other threads and something to interest everyone surely.

Was she wearing a burka?

Well it is pretty much against CoC to start a thread to disparage another member.

I think it's quite rehashable. Without documentation it remains an open case.

As I said last time around, it's common for people to ask for links/proof. You yourself have done so for far less important issues than a member's death.

I suppose, now, we need to decide for ourselves if an annual report with no mention of the event is enough proof to close this matter.

What an interesting spin to put on the thread. After going to pains to not name anyone other than Chickenguy in the OP, and focusing on the right to question unproven statements, that somehow becomes an attempt to disparage.

Most people would see it for what it is, the addressing of a question that was stymied the first time it was asked.

Asking questions is far different from making accusations.

Refusing to answer questions and shutting down or leaving in high dudgeon is a good way to create drama where there was no need.

And for context, our most beloved members have at times admitted to faking stories. RobertAC some years ago never was anything but loving to people. We were all stunned when he came back and posted a confessional thread that he had fabricated his relationship with a friend. And, true to form, no one seemed offended by it, because it seemed to come from a place of wishing it to be so, not to mock fools who'd believe it. That makes a huge difference, kind of like people not caring that Elroy is a sock puppet.

Elroy is a sock puppet slut what's had more than one member up inside.

. . . .

I have no recollection of the event or the member. Maybe this happened during the two years+ I didn't come around.

Anyway, I'd rather people didn't use lines such as 'we were all stunned' that seem to include those of us who very rarely post what we're really thinking. Our silences shouldn't, in any way, be misinterpreted.

I was speaking for those who posted in the thread where RobertAC told us of his story, or more exactly, of my memory of the tone of the responses. I agree that no one speaks for all of JUB.

Robert was known for posting in the comments, "just because" and leaving hugs. It was quite endearing.
