Chapter 786 – Lucky’s First Day Home and Swain Comes to Lunch
We finally got Lucky presentable enough to let him leave the hospital. Now we were just waiting for the doctor to give him parting instructions and finally release him. Cooper came in to check on him giving me a nice hug as he did. “Wo, wait there. Why does Josh get a hug and you’ve never given me a hug?” Lucky asked disappointedly. Cooper chuckled.
“Josh is a friend and you are a patient. Don’t worry, once you’ve been released, I can hug you goodbye,” Cooper told him as he grabbed Lucky’s arm and started moving it around like he’d instructed Rowen to do. “Remember to do this for him, Rowen, several times a day. And you, Lucky, can practice this on your own without Rowen’s help. If you want to get back to work, you need to work this arm, get more exercise and eat properly also. Don’t drink too much beer because you’re still on meds and alcohol will reduce the medication’s effectiveness so you don’t want that to happen as it will just prolong you getting back to work. Now, do you have any questions?” Cooper asked Lucky.
“Yes, an important one. How soon will you be over to check me out at my house?” Lucky asked him. Cooper chuckled.
“I’ll see you in a couple of days. I’ll give you a call first to make sure you’re available as I know you’re such a social animal and in high demand,” Cooper replied.
“You know it would just be easier if you moved in with me and be there for me in your off hours. The rent is damned cheap and I’m sure we could have a lot of fun together. That way Rowen wouldn’t have to suffer through taking care of me,” Lucky commented, disappointing Rowen.
“Cooper has to work during the day, Lucky. Who’s going to take care of you then? Think about it,” Rowen snapped back.
“Thank you for the offer, Lucky. That’s sweet of you, but I have a new place of my own right now, and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. Josh and his friends got me all set up, and I just love the place. You and Rowen will have a great time together. I’m sure he’ll take great care of you, won’t you, Rowen?” Cooper teased. Rowen told him ‘the best’. “I’ll come back in a bit right after you get discharged so I can hug you goodbye. I’m actually going to miss you, but I know you’ll get better faster once you get home,” Cooper assured him.
“I swear, you’re the only thing I’m going to miss at this hospital, that’s for sure,” Lucky told him. Cooper told him he was sweet, then headed out. “Now that is definitely boyfriend material if there ever was one,” Lucky told Rowen and I once Cooper left. Rowen rolled his eyes. I reminded Lucky he didn’t know Cooper all that well and maybe he wouldn’t care for a lot of things that Lucky liked, so who knew.
“For one thing, we have to get your house cleaned up before you have any company over. That house of yours is a mess, Lucky,” Rowen told him. Lucky smiled embarrassingly.
“Hey, I had a lot going on right before I got shot. I didn’t exactly have time for house cleaning with everything going on at the time. I certainly wasn’t expecting guests before returning home. Sorry you had to see it that way, but I’ll get better and clean it up once I get to feeling better,” Lucky replied.
“I’ll clean it up for you as no one that comes to visit you needs to see it like that. I already have a load of laundry in the washer for you. I did that when Josh and I stopped in to bring you some clothes,” Rowen told him. Lucky was amazingly surprised.
“Damn, partner, you might just come in handy after all. Gees, Josh, I got a maid and a nurse. Can’t beat that,” Lucky replied. I told him he was damn lucky to have Rowen commit to helping him out and he should appreciate that. Lucky said he really did appreciate Rowen. That had to make Rowen happy to hear. I kept thinking living with Lucky and listening to him talk would be like riding a rollercoaster as far as emotions were concerned, the ups and downs of listening to him. The things Rowen wanted to hear would be few and far between, yet the things that would discourage him would be plenty. I just hoped he could hold his own living with the man. I told myself I needed to spend considerable time there just to keep Rowen sane.
Eventually the doctor came in and went over all the medications Lucky was to take, and gave us written instructions as to when and how many of each of the three he prescribed. Rowen and I listened carefully as to what to do. He told Lucky the flesh part of the wounds were healed enough, he didn’t need to protect them taking a shower anymore. He did tell him not to do anything strenuous with his right arm, but he could, and should, use it as much as he could tolerate as that would help him get the use of it back faster. Rowen told the doctor about the exercises that Cooper had given us to do for Lucky. The doctor said that was excellent information and we should do it as much as Lucky could tolerate. Lucky asked him about driving. The doctor told him to give it a week or so before he operated a motor vehicle. Lucky promised he would. Lucky asked about going out for dinner. The doctor said he could do whatever he was comfortable doing, just not overdo it. Lucky agreed to behave to a certain extent. Lucky also asked him about going back to work. The doctor rolled his eyes, telling him he’d have to pass the physical competency test for the police department before they would let him go back to work. He did say they might let him do desk work or some type of light duty, but that was up to the department. The doctor told him to try to do some things, but just take it easy and enjoy his paid time off as he’d done his duty for the city of Uni in keeping it safe, and was very lucky to still be with us. Lucky acknowledged he was lucky, hence his name. The doctor chuckled and shook his hand, wishing him good luck, but that he wanted to see him in his office in one week. He said he’d text Lucky the date and time to be there. Lucky thanked him for his great help. The doctor told us someone would be up with a wheel chair to cart him off to the front door in a few minutes. Lucky was very relieved.
“I want to step next door to check on Kenny before we take your ass home,” Rowen told Lucky. Lucky said he should probably tell him goodbye also since he wouldn’t be here to visit with him anymore. The three of us stepped next door. We had to wait a couple of minutes as there was nurse there attending to his wounds. She finally finished up and told us we could go in. Kenny lit up when he saw us.
“Hey, it’s my fan club come to visit. You guys are so great. How’s it going with you, Lucky? I hear you’re going home today,” Kenny told Lucky as Rowen worked his way up beside Kenny’s bed.
“Yep, they finally let me out of this place. Hopefully, you’ll be able to get out of here soon also,” Lucky told him. Kenny said he wasn’t sure, but then didn’t know what all he was going to need to do once he got discharged as Clay worked all the time. He said they’d have to figure something out, maybe a ambulatory rehab center for a while if something else couldn’t be worked out. “Well, I have an extra bedroom. I guess we could stick you in there and have Rowen nurse us both back to health. As long as we have him to send for beer and food, we could have a good time,” Lucky chided.
“I could never ask you to do something like that, Lucky. You’ve been through enough,” Kenny told him. Lucky chuckled.
“I think we kind of went through all that together if I remember right. Seems to me you took extra bullets to keep me from getting killed. I guess that would be the least I could do to help you out. Besides, it’d be nice to have company anyway until you’re back on your feet. Since I can’t get our therapist to move in with me, we might as well make it a party, hang out and commiserate together,” Lucky chided. Kenny told him that was extremely nice of him to offer his help, but he wouldn’t hold him to it. Lucky said he’d be glad to have him as the more company the better if he was housebound anyway. Rowen said that would be no problem for him to take care of them both. In my mind, I thought that would solve Clay’s problem of having a place to fuck Alex anyway. Just then the wheelchair arrived to carry Lucky out of the place.
We quickly said our goodbyes, Rowen squeezing Kenny’s hand, telling Kenny to text him when he was free after Baxter’s meeting, and he’d come back and visit with him some this afternoon. Kenny told him he didn’t have to do that, but it was great that he did. Rowen said we were going to get him through this no matter what. Kenny thanked him profusely for his friendship.
I gathered up all Lucky’s ‘Get Well’ cards, his personal items and laundry, and put them in a bag the hospital provided. Lucky was bound and determined he needed to see Cooper before he left as he wanted his hug. Cooper was waiting at the door as the orderly wheeled Lucky out the door. Lucky had him stop, then stood up to hug Cooper who hugged him properly. “I could almost fall in love with you, I think,” Lucky chided, as he hugged Lucky. Cooper chuckled, telling Lucky he thought Lucky could do much better than him as he was such a character. “Josh, you need to convince this guy I’m a very loving individual and not just a character,” Lucky told me.
