It's interesting... in discussions with friends who I would gauge as on being either side of the liberal/conservative scale, a large number of them have said to me, "I don't know why we don't just let them all kill each other". It's an imperfect sentiment that shows how fed up everyone is with the excuses for endless bloodlust and murder in the Middle East....And honest to pete. If Israel is going to be a genocidal butcher state...I am seeing less of a downside of Iran having a Nuclear device to bring Israel to heel on the issue of Palestine.
I heard an interview with Sen Elissa Slotkin [R-MI] that was a good analysis of where a lot of Americans who have lived or served in the Middle East are. Nobody likes the extreme religious leadership of Iran, or the corrupt military that have partnered with the Islamists to line their own pockets with money.
Where I do differ with Slotkin is on America's role in creating the mess. Like so many of these terrible petro-states, the US has tinkered in the politics of Iran, including their support of the Pahlavi Shahs which ultimately fomented the 1979 Revolution which led to development of the current Islamic Republic.
The Iranian people are well educated and have a lot of regrets about the 1979 Revolution. The US has continued to tinker in Iranian politics and allow Israel to manipulate US policy toward Iran. We just don't seem to be able to learn from the history. It never ends well when we get mired down in what is going on there.
