I Think the mental trials we all undergo to define ourselves give us a very solid definition of who we are as an individual, and how we wish to be perceived, this coupled with the fact that doubtlessly we will have to be defensive of our identities can lead to this misguided infighting.
We need to understand that who we are as a gay person does not speak for who everyone else is, and getting offended because somebody defines their homosexuality differently than you is just the same as a straight person not accepting a gay person.
