It's a shame that there are so many "artists" out there who can't get the promotion they need because they're not some "big name"...yet they're the ones who have something new to bring to the table when it comes to music.
^THIS, and the rest of your post.

Therehave been times when it has been otherwise, but that's been the exception. I'm old enough to remember more times than most people will remember.

Pre-recorded radio music was EXTREMELY homogenized until about 1956. When rock and roll took off - a good part of it coming from "low budget" recording artists and record companies - the upstart companies piled on and, by 1958, the competition was fierce and, because of so much non-formula rock and roll coming to the forefront, I consider that probably the best "pre-Beatles" year for radio. Elvis Presley was probably the biggest influence bringing rock and roll to nearly every corner of the United States and Canada, but he couldn't have pulled the entire load alone without Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, etc. (Actually 1957 was probably the very best of all rock and roll years ever, but it took radio a year to catch up...)

By 1959, big money was getting into rock and roll...and the really fast and hard stuff was somewhat pushed back. Big-money interests have always tended to be conservative (going back much farther than my lifetime), and it showed in the music that was trending. By the end of 1960, ballads and slower stuff were back to near-dominance, though the traditional adult pop standards, often with big band overtones, no longer dominated. But, often, the most popular songs became ballads or, sometimes, lush pop instrumentals. (think "Theme From a Summer Place" the #1 song of 1960.) Even with radio music again somewhat homogenized, other rock and roll and independent stuff wasn't kept entirely at bay, because hard-and-fast "formatting" still barely existed. The homogenous music period on radio didn't involve much more than 1960 and parts of 1959, because new styles were coming out at a lightning pace once 1961 arrived, and some juggernauts (such as Phil Spector, "The Twist," and Motown) were soon to break wide open, or already had. Rock and roll had a very bright and lively feeling to it, with the teenage ballads, the girl groups, the first soul music, oodles of rockin' instrumentals slongside the juggernauts. Generally the music was all about having fun...

Then came The Beatles.

Independent music had a good chance being heard on the radio around 1958 and first-half of 1959, then a lot more independent stuff started showing up around 1961 (after that "valley" in 1960), and the period 1964 to 1968 was just "crazy" with it. (A good indicator is that there were more songs that reached the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966, than in any other year ever. More successful titles = more churn.) Music started to homogenize again bvy 1969 and 1970, and stayed thus for a decade, though the last half of that was a change in the dominant music when disco became huge.

The last time I'm aware of when alternate types of music had a chance on the radio was around 1981 to 1983, when New Wave and other alternative forms became successful. But, now, it is thirty years since I've noticed much independent music on the radio. Of course it's hard to know when, nowadays, it seems that absolutely no current song ever played on any American radio station will ever be announced or identified.

I have not enjoyed radio in thirty years, because of that.

sometimes i really wish we could all have a big jub meet so i can see how some of the people here would interact in person. It would also be fun to see who splits up into little cliques, groups, and fan clubs like i see here sometimes.

yes, yes,yes

The fact that I still live with my parents, depresses the shit out of me. Its been so hard to keep a steady job. Im lucky that I have a place to stay but sometimes I just want my own space. Bleh.

Yesterday morning, after I ate the buffalo chicken wings from the 7-Eleven across the street from my apartment, I had that wonderfully annoying moment we've all had, where you get a piece of something stuck off in your teeth. Since I was at home, when this happened, I simply went to my bathroom and tried to floss out whatever piece of chicken meat was lodged in there.

While I brush and floss everyday, I still couldn't get this damn piece of chicken out of my teeth.

It was lodged on the lower-back teeth, in between the last two in the back - an already very stubborn place to get something out of, in the human mouth. I tried to brush again, flossing, mouthwash... I'm not kidding you - my mouth was so clean, it probably could have passed a restaurant health inspection.

And then the pressure started to set in - the prelude to a toothache. I took two Tylenol, and while there was a little soreness, thankfully, it wasn't much more than that. I played some Twilight Princess, went to bed, then woke up at Midnight, thankfully with no pain at all.

Buffalo chicken wings are going to be the bane of my existence.

OMG...I just totally flushed 20 bucks down the toilet. I'm not going to say what I did--but I can't believe the stupidity. :dead:

Gentleheart...put the debit card doooooowwwwnnnnn...:dead:

Was in Buffalo last night and had 'authentic' Buffalo wings. They sucked.

"People Can't Give You What They Dont Have"...I forget who said that either Maya Angelou, Oprah or Iylana Vanzant LOL

I wanted to say this to someone this morning, but I dont think that they are ready to hear it.

Sometimes we drive ourselves crazy, getting frustrated with folks because they can't be who we want them to be. We can only change ourselves.

I just read some VILE shit in the comments section at yahoo on an article about a gay man in Cameroon who has died. I am used to people being complete assholes when it comes to the treatment of gays, but some of the stuff was incredible. It's really hard not to have hatred for bigots and homophobes. The thing that bugs me the most is when straight people try to speak FOR gays when many of them have no fucking IDEA what we go through on a daily basis because of dicks like them. I found myself thinking things I am ashamed of while reading those comments. I don't care...I hate people sometimes. I really do.

I don't know if I feel more sad or more angry about this. All he did was tell someone he loved him. How vile his own family was to him and they let him die. I suspect he really suffered, too.

It has always been my opinion that if someone felt that being gay was wrong, that was their right to believe it. But when you go beyond that belief to actually hating and harming someone, that makes you reprehensible. I suspect a lot of these haters have a bigger problem with a man loving another man more than they do the sex part because love means something deeper, something powerful. Looking into his eyes in that picture made me so sad. Sometimes I despair for humanity.

I know this should go in jdcnow's other thread but that thread depresses me LOL. A customer came in today to get information transferred from their old phone to their new phone. I thought she meant phone numbers because transferring pictures won't always work 100%. I let the customer know and she freaked out. She wanted me to do it because they told her over the phone that we could and I explained the situation. I told her that the 100% surefire way to do it was to plug the old phone into her computer, copy them to her desktop, plug in the new one, and drag them over. She just wanted me to do it since they had done it for her daughter in the past. Generally when someone isn't trying to hear our advice and on top of it is being extra bossy, it's because they don't know what they're doing or talking about and don't want to appear stupid.

She leaves and I get a call from probably the biggest asshole I've ever talked to on the phone. He starts off with asking for the name of the person who won't help one of our customers because he wants it escalated to corporate. I actually have to interrupt him to explain the situation. He says some other horseshit and then after I explain to him what actually happened, he talks about how it most likely won't adversely affect me. Fuck you buddy. How about you call center fucks make some more appointments for customers to come in after the store is closed, or hang up on us when you can't figure out the issue we're having, or tell the customer we'll switch out their device when they tell you they lost it? Weird case of white knight syndrome from some guy with a headset. The funniest part was her saying that if she was younger and pretty that I would have helped her. Oh ok. I can guarantee my bf doesn't have a vagina.

Only thing that annoys me is that they were QUICK to come at my neck and she's the type of spoiled white bitch to push the issue because how dare a peon not lay down for her. I really hope this is the last of it. If someone else at a different store tries it and they succeed, I'll never hear the end of how I didn't want to help a customer, how I'm rude, etc.

Which brings me to the fact that everyone thinks I'm an asshole at work because I hold people accountable for the stupid shit they do. I work with a good amount of lazy bastards who are all about passing the buck, pawning work off on someone else, and stepping on me regardless of whatever help I give them. I laugh at some of the people who act as if they're responsible for me having a job. What I do and how I do things is the reason that a lot of goods get sold at full price, when the modus operandi is to ask for discounts on stuff that's already cheap.

does anyone know if there are some kind of "workshops" or something out there for late 20-somethings who are experiencing that quarter-life career crisis-uncertainty issue? :dead:

 you rock. I need that laugh.

Maybe you're trying too hard. Life is a journey, not a destination.

Turn off the cruise control, kick back a little and enjoy the ride, and the views.

It's the unexpected things you don't plan on that lead to the best things you will look back on.
