since no one in our house watches TV, we don't have cable, so I have to watch this by itself. I used to watch it on the 24-hour Xmas showing.

Pitch Perfect was an awful movie. I think Rebel Wilson is overhyped and so is this movie when it came out. Her TV series, Super Fun Night is also awful. I personally can't see what is so great about Rebel Wilson. She's not funny. just my opinion.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

It was okay, but nowhere near as good as the LOTR movies.

I have to disagree. I thought the First Hobbit movie and the second one, The Desolation of Smaug were good. I'm looking forward to the third and final movie, which comes out next year.

Entertainingly good but not great. Could've been shaved by 20-30 mins, IMHO.

I will probably like The Hobbit more when I can watch all three back to back. They are after all one movie.

I never realized how hateful everyone, including Santa, is in this special!! They all hate Rudolph because he is "different"!!!

What if they made a sequel where they accept his red nose but then find out he's also a homo??

"Rudolph the Flaming Reindeer"...??

I hated American Hustle. Just came back from seeing it with my hubby and two lady friends and neither of us liked it but Jennifer Lawrence is terrific. I thought it would never end.

Gosford Park
again
Love this film
There's so much going on and so many characters interacting and I do mean acting, not a special effect in sight or obnoxious loud rap music track. That has its place too but I can't take too much of it.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

I loved it more than the first one although I enjoyed that first one from a year ago when I saw it in theatres.
I never read the books so my enjoyment of it is not tethered to any previous exposure to the book series.
So I never feel that something is dragged out over three films or anything... although I have to say, I thought that I would hate the Evangeline Lily character but she was awesome.
She beats the heck out of Liv Tyler whose sole purpose in the LOTR films is to roll around seductively on that bed thingy for three movies, okay two movies she did have something to do in the first one but her line delivery of "come claim him" or something to that effect is still cringe-worthy.
Ooh, that dragon was amazing and I'm starting to warm up to Benedict Cumberbatch's voice.
One thing does bug me though, Gandalf now has pre-knowledge of Sauron on the rise so it does not mesh with the Gandalf in the LOTR movies, hopefully the final Hobbit movie will address that somehow, although probably unlikely.

Anyway, happy holidays everyone!

According to Tolkien's LotR appendices, Gandalf spent many years before LotR discovering Sauron coming back to power. At the beginning of Fellowship, Gandalf was already aware of Sauron's threat. He had already suspected Bilbo's ring was linked to Sauron. Jackson is addressing this in his movies from the appendices material.

I must have a LOTR marathon this week to check this out but if Jackson is following those appendices then that is awesome. I stand corrected! :D

I finally watched Star Trek - Into Darkness. It was OK, parts of it seem rather deja vu. Felt like I have seen the plot before - especially the entering the dangerous chamber to save everyone (I am trying not to give the plot away).

I found the previous movie more interesting. Chris Pine is cute though.

I saw American Hustle last night and I liked it. I thought Jennifer Lawrence did a great job as did Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper.

Indeed. At first they thought that the Necromancer might be a Nagul, probably the Witch King of Angmar whom Eowyn fought in the Return of the King during the seigh of Minus Tirith. Gandalf wanted to attack sooner, but Saruman voted against it. Saruman by that time was already wanting the One Ring for himself.

What NO one knew then, was that between the time of Isildurs death, and Sauron going to Dol Guldur, Gollum, then Smeagol murdered his cousin Deagol who had found the Ring in the mud of the Anduin River beside which Mirkwood grew, took it and eventually ended up in the caves of Misty Mountains where Bilbo found him and the Ring.

Later during the Battle of Five Armies, which occurs in the latter part of the Hobbit, the White Council attack Dol Guldor as Saruman by that time, thought it prudent that they oust Sauron from Dol Guldur lest Sauron find the One Ring, for Suaron knew it was around there that Isildur was slain and the ring lost. However, Sauron, (whom the council now knows with certainty, was the Necromancer) aware that there were going to attack, flees back to Mordor where he officially reveals himself and begins the rebuilding of Barad Dur, the dark tower and prepares to make war on Middle Earth, hoping that at some point the Ring will turn up... and finds it does when Gollum, now tracking Bilbo, gets caught by Mordor and interrogated by Sauron who of course finds out about Bilbo and the Shire and sends forth the Nazgul to fetch it.

... whew, I do go on hey? :)

All THAT said, the last movie I (re)watched was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
