Jay I absolutely agree with you here on all points.
I think Obama's biggest challenge should be convincing all of those "New Democrats;" youth, independents, moderate republicans, and just Americans who were in General tired of Bush and the tired GOP Message back in 2008 to give him a second term in 2012.
Here's the poll that was posted in the link that Ninja108 linked to when he created this thread:
![]()
If anything the poll represents just how apoplectic Americans are to the current State of our Union.
However, I'm pretty confident that if either of the GOP candidates that are currently being bantered about should win the GOP Primaries next year, Obama will still win.
Not anywhere near the margins that he won back in 2008, but he'll still win.
Not because I foresee the Democrats and President Obama finally getting their shit together, but because the only victories that the Republican Party seem to be making is protecting the wealthiest Americans at all costs, and their willingness to put their Party and their ideology over the interests of most of the rest of Americans, and America in principle.
Given that kind of choice, Americans generally continue to "dance with the one who brung 'em."
Back in 2004, with two wars being waged, and the first signs of the economy going into to the toilet with Republican lead deficit spending, that there was no way that Bush could get a second term.
But he did.
The electorate waited until 2006 to end the 12 year Republican Revolution by take the Congressional Majority away from the Republicans, and giving both Houses of Congress back to the Democrats.
And the GOP still didn't learn anything. [strike]They ran McCain/Palin in 2008, and lost the Presidency by one of the biggest landslides since LBJ beat Goldwater in 1964.[/strike]
They ran Bob Dole, and Jack Kemp back in 1996 and got lost in a Landslide! [thanks laikaNYC, see above]
Some would argue that the GOP stole the election in 2000 since Bush didn't win the popular vote, and SCOTUS ultimately decided the winner.
So What did the Republicans do? Bush43 in the White House, both Houses of Congress controlled by the Republicans?
They Ran American like they had a mandate from the Whole of America.
They went even further to the right during the Congressional Races of 2010, and the Democrats pretty much sat on their hands losing Congress, while barely hanging on to the Senate.
Politically the Democrats should be capitalizing on that, but in the "art of compromise" they've only moved further to the Right in an attempt to meet "the crazy" that passes for and to avoid a true political debate in our country.
Those facts alone should be reason for the Democrats to lose.
At least the Republicans are "on message," even if all that that message is "making sure that Obama is a one term president."
Right now I think that poll represents that America is a ship without a rudder, or an effective captain.
My Grandpa use to say, "If you don't stand for something, then you'll fall for anything."
Right now I don't see Democrats standing for much of anything, other than attempting to be a bulwark against the complete dismantling of every progressive issue and item that was hard fought and won during the past century.
That those polled are willing to vote for anyone candidate that they think could either get us out of this mess, or the candidate that most effectively panders to their fears, or against the candidate that most or least panders to their fears, is not the Hope and Change that many Americans voted for 3+ years ago.![]()
