I applaud Katy Perry for continuing to be a chart beast on both iTunes & radio effortlessly, but she is boring me this time around. "Roar" hasn't grown on me like I thought it would, and "Dark Horse" bored me after just 5 listens. I hate the context she's using the term dark horse which makes no sense for one, Juicy J's rap verse makes even less sense, and the song just abruptly ends right when it feels like it's starting to build towards something epic. (I heard "Teenage Dream" on the radio the other day and still makes me bop.)

Well the album leaked and... it's a bit underwhelming for me. She worked with mainly Dr. Luke/Max Martin on this one again yet it feels disjointed. The more uptempo stuff during the first half of the album isn't all that memorable as it intends to be -- I mean WTF is an "International Smile"? -- and the 2nd half just sort of blends into one long, seemingly never-ending song. But Katy Perry is gonna rule the 4th quarter with Prism, no doubt, but she didn't top TD with this one at all. :/

Rarely can an album sell almost 300,000 copies in its opening week and be considered a disappointment.

This is one of those unusual circumstances.

Based on opening day sales data, Hits Daily Double reports that Katy Perry’s heavily hyped, long awaited and aggressively marketed “Prism” is pacing to debut in the 270-290K ballpark.

If the figure holds, it would not only land well below expectations but represent growth of less than 100K over predecessor “Teenage Dream,” which moved 192K debut units in the summer of 2010.

That album–and its deluxe re-release–produced a record-setting six number one singles and two more top three singles. A ubiquitous album that established Katy Perry as the reigning queen of pop, “Teenage Dream” ended up selling more than 2.7M copies to prove the singer-songwriter was not simply the woman behind the latest interchangeable voice on the radio. She was a uniquely recognizable, ardently supported pop star. She was someone who, moving forward, should have the ability to sell serious quantities of albums.

I'm really surprised, sales shouldn't be everything and all that, but coming off a huge era that was "Teenage Dream" those numbers are really lackluster. "Prism" really does cement her status as a single's artist. The only songs I've kept on my iPod: "Birthday," "Love Me," "Ghost," & "Choose Your Battles." I'm sure I'll have a few others after she's done milking this one, "Dark Horse" is starting to grow on me now.
