It's mainly due to the state of her relationship with Warner... they're both upset over the end of the marriage. After all, Warner made millions from her and vice versa. When negotiations for a contract broke down, things went sour quickly...

To this day I'm so surprised why her American Life album got trashed so quickly by everyone....critics & fans alike.
It's definitely one of the best albums she's ever made IMO...

American Life was just unlistenable. The lyrics sounded like they were written by Rocco. The music made your ears bleed. It was better than Music, her worst record -- a record that sounded like bad b-sides.
Hard Candy is excellent.
I had this special edition all those years ago. It comes with stamps, and a newspaper poster of the cover. It's really crap. You can get it for next to nothing on eBay, new.

Madonna LOVES Hard Candy!
Albums make no money. She wants to tour, and this tour is the first under her contract. She had to make this the biggest success possible.
She couldn't care less about how the album sells, which has sold 3 million copies worldwide. She did no promotion for it and it still went #1 and broke records.
She and Warner are parting ways, and I think that's quite possibly her having even less interest in the album selling itself. They're not her future company.
She has a Greatest Hits package coming out, the last on contract. I'm sure it'll have new songs, and they'll probably tie the last single off Hard Candy, by putting that single onto the Greatest Hits album.
Madonna made a music video for "Beat Goes On" for the tour. She looks incredible. Madonna always knows what she's doing. This wasn't accident.

Honestly, I think Madonna is one of those people who makes really amazing records and then she makes this strange albums that only appeal to people who "get it."
I find parts of American Life to be fantastic... others just annoying. Music has its moments and it's also got its moments of sheer torture.
Hard Candy is the first album since Bedtime Stories that I thought didn't have a single listenable song on it. I thought Erotica was horrible... a few good songs cluttered up by songs like "Erotica" and "Deeper and Deeper" that just sounded like rip offs of her recent hits and a bunch of boring ballads.
I still think Like A Prayer is by far her best album although I'll give credit to Ray Of Light as the album that came closest to repeating it. I also still think her first album is a lot more fun than most people remember.

I agree about The First Album... Holiday and Physical Attraction still sound great today. I think that her best three albums are Music, American Life and The First Album....
I agree that Hard Candy is probably the worst Madonna album ever. I am a huge Madonna fan and I rarely play it and if I do I skip most of the tracks. Dance Tonight is the only really great song on the album.
I think paying extra money for an album that just basically has extra packaging and no extra songs is stupid.

Well I guess the "hard" since I like the first half of it. 4 minutes, miles away, she's not me, heartbeat, candy shop, beat goes on... love all of them. The other half not so much but its nice I guess. I even like the messy "incredible" (so bad its good).

Personally i thought the album is a snoozer with 2 or 3 good tracks and was her jjust trying to get out of WB as fast as possible Im excited for what she does with her new contract.

Surely she's one of the most over-promoted people in music?
When she has an album out, you cant move for ads and promos. If something doesn't sell well at that point, you have to look at the quality of the product.

The same thing happened to Mariah and Janet. I just think the music industry has really changed. Promotion isn't the same since people get sick of songs quicker since everything is right at your fingertips. Remember the days of waiting by the radio for a song to come on? Than rushing to buy the cd the day it came out? You really were excited to have that cd in your hands and to hear those songs on the radio or even the premiere of the videos on Mtv. Online has changed all that. The old releasing 4 singles thing seems a way of the past. Every single gets out b4 the cd even does. Your over it by the time it's officially released.

She isn't bound by a record label anymore. She doesn't have to produce one more record BUT she signed a 10 year deal with Live Nation meaning shes still going to be touring. I don't know if people want to hear "4 Minutes" in 2017 and she'll be 60 by then!

Maybe I am just a Madonna diehard fan but I liked most of the songs on "Hard Candy" especially "4 Minutes", "Heartbeat", "She's Not Me", "Incredible", and "Dance 2Night". I assume the reason for lack of promotion is because Warner was sour over the end of the marriage. I was actually very surprised at the choice of "Give It 2 Me" as a second single - there are much better songs on the album which in my opinion could have been selected to sustain "Hard Candy"'s momentum. O well - I look forward to her next offering while continuing to enjoy candy.

Foe those of you who don't know, Madonna is currently on a World Tour. This is what an artist does to promote a new CD. She is breaking box office records and landing on the cover of every major newspaper in each city that she performs in. If this is not promotion, I don't know what is.
