Re: Madonna - American Life

^^^Must be because you do yoga AND pilates...ok, i'll stop now.

My overall favorite on that cd is probably Love Profusion

Re: Madonna - American Life

Easily her most underrated album, and, unlike her previous album -- the mediocre "Music", this album is actually about something.

As to why it was so unpopular: well, start with the artwork. This is the only Madonna album cover where she's not being promoted as a sex pot. For most peeps, Madonna's only about sex, glamor, superficiality and nothing else. Here the only flesh we see is her face and hands. And posing in a commie guerrilla jumpsuit, no less, doing yoga poses. Not exactly what people expected.

And while the album is not overtly political, the sub textural criticism of American Life about, well, American life is pretty clear throughout. And this was at at time close enough to 9/11 when dissent was still considered uncool and unpatriotic. (It wouldn't be until another year before Greenday would come out with the similarly titled and themed "American Idiot", only they got praise instead of scorn for their efforts).

No doubt this was Madonna's riskiest album, both artistically and career-wise, and it's possible she withdrew her "American Life" video (which, btw, can be viewed in its original form on YouTube) because she feared for her own personal safety and that of her family's. The risk might not have paid off at the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if some day it will be considered her masterpiece.

Of course, if you're a prejudiced Madonna hater you're gonna see only what you want to see.

Thank you, all. I now see it as the work of genius it obviously is.

Re: Madonna - American Life

I like the album but it's not my favourite... mother and father, xstatic process and love profusion are all wonderful.

Music is my favourite Madonna album.

Re: Madonna - American Life

i like the album but is not like blow me away or something.

i feel that the album is missing something. feels like it has a hole. the sound is like very high. the voice, or the guitar riffs, sometimes annoys me.

mirwais over use the beeps and electronic sounds..i feel that. but there are tracks that i love, like "i'm so stupid", "mother and father" (live is WOW), and the singles.

Re: Madonna - American Life

confessions is really good...

but American life the song charted at #2 in the uk and #1 in Japan.. so yes they did chart.. as well as hollywood.

Listen, I love Madonna 110% but here in her home country, the album was NOT a hit factory: "Love Profusion," "Nothing Fails," and "Hollywood" didn't even come close to making the Hot 100.

Only the title song, "American Life" charted (if you can call it that). It made it to No. 37 in late April of 2003. Follow-up "Hollywood" didn't even make Billboard's Bubbling-Under.

Re: Madonna - American Life

American Life is my favorite Madonna album and the only one I listen to on any regular basis.
I'm Breathless is my second favorite and second most played album by Madonna

Re: Madonna - American Life

i do like how she made her statement our there and how she was one of the first people to PUBLICLY speak out against the president and the way hes running it.

at that time ,2003 ,not that many people were speaking out to the president.

but i dont think this is her best album . but she does have some really amazing songs .. american life , love profusion , hollywood , and nothing fails

Re: Madonna - American Life

music and ray of light wasnt sex themed... neither was the debut and like a pryer

They may not be as sexy as how Madonna usually portrays herself, but even on the cover of the relatively prim "Ray of Light" she's sporting a see-through blouse. (On how many albums do we actually get to see her tits?) And in the "Like a Prayer" vid she's making out with the Christ figure.

Anyways, if you check out the reader reviews of American Life on Amazon.com you'll see that it's a more highly regarded album than the music/culture critics would have us believe. And Mirwais' production was experimental as opposed to popular, so of course it went over the heads of most listeners who expected a Mariah Carey styled pop album. It always happens when a pop artist makes un-pop music: a critical bashing is sure to ensue.

Re: Madonna - American Life

A true Madonna fan looks at "American Life" like at spilled milk.

Were any of you guys grown ups when the "Like A Prayer"/ Pepsi commercial came on on that fateful Thursday night in 1989?

Then MTV premeired the music video a day later.

And all hell broke lose.

500 years from now people will be talk about us and how we were so upset (well, hello not me) at this injustic.

I certainly do. As a mess that I hope was accidental, and that I hope won't be repeated. :)

Maybe DarkEmoBoi was in diapers or something (wow, now I feel old).

In March of 2003 the U.S. invaded Afghanistan unnessarily.

"We" (not me) killed ceveral civialians.

Madonna withdrew her video (because should have).

I hate threads on "American Life." Any grown up knows it was a bad time.

Can not wait until the Bushes are out of offices and these wars are ove.

Re: Madonna GHV2 HORRIBLE

yeah, its just like the immaculate collection, so many songs were absent from that, such as: Angel, Dress You Up, True Blue, Keep it Together, Whos that Girl, Causing A commotion, Gambler, she has just simply too many good songs to feature all on one disc, i actually like Every Song On Immaculate, And GHV2, i would of liked to see Rain and This Used To be My Playground, but overall there both solid Collections!

Re: Madonna GHV2 HORRIBLE

"GHV2" is one of Madonna's biggest missteps.

Unlike "The Immaculate Collection," "GHV2" didn't even include one -- let alone two -- new songs.

I hate poorly executed greatest hits packages. And aside from the "GHV2 Video Megamix" and dance single of the same name, there was nary a bit of publicity for it.

Re: Madonna GHV2 HORRIBLE

I own that album too, and the first thing I thought after listening to it for the first time was "where the hell are Nothing Really Matters and Rain?" and then, of course, all the other songs you've already mentioned. Anyway, I miss the 90's Madonna... he last album... hummm... not for me.
