I read that this charted so high partly at the time because its CD single price was lower than usual. It tracks because this song is heard literally heard nowhere like Mariah's other big hits from the age.

But the thing this is actually a jammer :p. It deserved to live on a bit more than it did.


And yes I read the story about how Tommy Mottola stole the original intended sample for J-Lo :p.
 
I was there when the song jumped sharply upward after the physical single was released at a discounted price. Virgin Records slashed the price of the “Loverboy” CD single to around $0.99. Sometimes even cheaper at major retail chains. That mattered a lot in 2001 because physical single sales were still heavily weighted on the Billboard charts and cheaper singles encouraged impulse buys. Fans could also easily purchase multiple copies. That’s basically why the song peaked at number 2.
