Re: Mariah "I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time" FLOP?!

Considering the state of her voice nowadays, what would be wise for her to do would be heading towards blues, jazz, slow rock, soul...things that wouldn't require belting because she's uncapable of it as of these days. If she's smart, she'll do that...but since she's an attention whore who needs to sell millions to get her self-esteem a boost up...I doubt she'll do that.

Re: Mariah "I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time" FLOP?!

Is it just me?
or does this remind anyone of Danugh?

I know what you mean, i wish i was inn charge of promotion and single choices of my favorite acts too.

I don't know who Danugh is, but I was mostly just joking. I do like Mariah, though, tons. But in large part because of how fascinating of a cultural object she is. I mean, the woman is a DIVA. She's so profoundly oblivious to anything outside her divadom that it's a marvel to behold. How can one not worship such beautiful insanity?

I say we all go out and buy Mariah albums.

Yeah i could tell you were being tongue in cheek
Danugh is a Britney and Rihanna freak that lurks the corners of this website. He is soooooo delusional, not because he likes them, i can deal with people who like britney, but Danugh just doesn't listen to anyone except the voices in her head that tell her to post total nonsense.

Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

I bought the 17 track UK version and the sound quality sucks like i have to struggle to hear what she is saying. I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT should've been included on the USA version.. it would've helped sales but whatever.

I bought the Japanese version thinking the quality would be better... am I the only one who thinks that BOY I NEED YOU sounds very muffled and sounds like shes singing on a sore throat or she just got done crying after someone dumped her. Usually this would make a person sing with more emotion but it makes her sound ungodly. I am really trying hard to like this cd cuz i bought two copies. Its her best looking album cover... i give it that much.. Someone please give ur feedback on this cd.. I do like the first track though but its just not suited for American radio.

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

Her best looking cover is, by far, the Butterfly album cover.

Anyway, this album, although not her worst (that prize goes to E=MC2) is not a good album either. It only has 3 songs (counting a bonus track) that are actually solid good songs...Sunflowers For Alfred Roy, Subtle Invitation (the best song) and There Goes My Heart. The rest is just mediocrity.

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

When the best song on your CD is the Def Leppard cover done as an adult-contemporary ballad, you're in trouble. And her voice sounds (to be charitable) ragged. No wonder they brought in the heavy production for the next two discs...

E=MC2 Is what got me to become a Mariah Fan. I was hoping the first LP from this record label would be good too. I am considering buying charmbracelet on Vinyl.

My most sincere condolences. :(

J/k...well, not really but if you like it, you like it. It's a completely shitty album but if you enjoy then enjoy it. ;)

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

The problem isn't the format.
It's what's on the format.

The sad fact is - Mariah was in really poor voice on Charmbracelet. After the Glitter fiasco, they attempted to recast her as an adult contemporary artist. Not a bad idea, really, except 1. her voice was in rough shape (whether that was a temporary or permanent thing is an open question), and 2. the production is rather sparse. Sparse production worked great on her very first album, since she was in fantastic voice, and it let you enjoy it uncluttered. On Charmbracelet, it's a curse rather than a blessing.

Solution? Clutter up the mix. Boost the bass, boost the treble, boost the midrange, add heavier beats, bottoms, keyboard fills, special guest stars, whatever...until Mariah is just a small component of the song. Which is why Mimi and MC "work". I don't necessarily LIKE them better than Charmbracelet, but they're certainly more superficially enjoyable.

I bought it on vinyl record too! It caused me to go out and buy ALL her albums on cd. Now my goal is to get them all on vinyl record i have E=MC2 on record so far

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

IMO, Butterfly is her most solid and coeherent work to date. It's one of the only 2 or 3 albums of hers I'd still keep.

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

I like her debut album and i like Emotions! I bought them all the same day on amazon (Debut to Emancipation) after I picked up E=MC2 at Target a week before for the third single.. I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time. Her best song ever in my opinion

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

I'd keep the debut for the voice alone...it's the best thing about it. In terms of songs I only like Vanishing, Vision Of Love and You Need Me (it was nice hearing her rockin' out a little).

I'd also keep her Mtv Unplugged cd. And Butterfly.
Yep, these are the three cd's I'd keep.

The rest...meh.

The Emotions album might be a keeper as well, come to think of it. Her voice sounded more mature on that album...probably a better album vocally than the debut, in certain aspects. And I liked the jazz number she did there.

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

I actually Charmbracelet is her most underrated album, it's better than half of her album catalogue.

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

Which one?

"The Wind".

Yes, "If It's Over" it's also jazz-esque but it has a lot of gospel built into it as well. Her live version of this song on SNL in 1991 was INCREDIBLE...she changed the arrangements of the song, made it not only a fusion of jazz and gospel but also incorporated a rock sound...plus her voice in that performance was motherfucking powerful! It was like "Whitney who?".

Btw, I still LOVE "Make It Happen". What a funky beat and that bass...yummy!

Re: Mariah Carey Charmbracelet

'Charmbracelet' was too rushed. She didn't care what she sounded like, she recorded the entire thing in Capri, and therefore the studio production was terrible. I notice that the worst songs from her last few albums were recorded in Capri. Some words to Mariah: STOP RECORDING IN CAPRI.

The Emancipation was only overproduced when it came to J.D.
The ones that weren't JD produced were fine. What I appreciate from him is that he forced her to not just sing, but SANG. And that's what she did. And that's why it's her best record singe Butterfly.

I disagree with everything you just said.

Personally, I think her best looking cover is The Emancipation of Mimi, with Rainbow & E=MC2 close behind.

Her worst album is definitely Glitter. I love E=MC2! I really think if you gave it an honest chance, you would like it!

Oh, & the three songs you mentioned from Charmbracelet are sooooo not the best ones. Bringin' on the Heartbreak, My Saving Grace, & Through the Rain are the best songs on that album.
