I think "Hero" for sure. "Vision of Love" is a groundbreaking song for sure but if I saw her in concert and she didn't sing "Hero" I would feel cheated. Its Mariah's "I Will Always Love You" or "My Heart Will Go On". The song has a simple beautiful lyric that anyone can relate to this is her signature song.
Re: Mariah Carey's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Official Track List Revealed!
This album is far from her worst effort but this isn't the best of her. Much of the album is hard to sing along with, too many Mariah voice overs. Its beautiful to hear but I don't think its radio friendly. You get lost in the message. She needs let her songs breath a bit more. A remix album is not going to help these songs by adding a rapper. As much as I used to like hip hop, its dead much like disco it has nothing more to offer.
1) Obsessed (even though this is not my fave by far or a fan fave, I think it was the right choice. However, I kind of don't like the fact that it was the first single being that it is not representative of the album's overall sound)
2) Angel's Cry (this has the best chance to top the charts)
3) Up Out My Face (I think this would be similar to Shake it Off being released after We Belong Together)
4) Candy Bling (I think that this song can reach people that aren't typically into her. she's never done a song like this before and it sounds very fresh, even though it sounds a little to much like The-Dream's songs. It may be risky though).
5) Inseparable (double release w/HATEU. I can hear this on radio, and I think a double release with a ballad would be a good idea which isn't something we aren't used to today, even though this wouldn't be realistic at all since I think this is just a Beyonce tactic)
6) HATEU (double release w/Inseparable. Another strong ballad, but I think it would have been better to be released after Angels Cry, the stronger ballad)
7) I Want to Know What Love Is (good to close the album with)
MY PICKS WITH WHAT WE HAVE TO WORK WITH...
1) Obsessed
2) I Want to Know What Love Is (Did alright. I don't think that it would have gone #1 but if the video were released at the right time and had better promotion it would have done well. it did fine for not having much promotion)
3) HATEU (I feel like Angels Cry should have came first, being the "big ballad". I think that if this song doesn't do well quick she should just go straight to the remix)
4) Up Out My Face, Inseparable, OR new/remixed song (I think that Angels Cry should have gotten out there sooner, but we can't have another ballad back to back)
5) Angels Cry (hopefully the album won't lose momentum by the time we get to this song)
6) Candy Bling (I think this would be a great light summer jam next year)
7) Inseparable OR new/remixed song
1. I want to know... should never been a single it should have been on the album to create any buzz and if people were interested in hearing it-BUY THE ALBUM!
2.Obsessed really grows so maybe it should have just been a summer free single that let people know Mariah is coming.
Works as a first single too i guess.
3.H.A.T.E.U Has got to be the best choice as a single/video/remixes- classic Mariah fashion (with the remix version reproduced to a rendition of another song that changes the tempo) which she has done now.
4.Angels Cry.
5.Inseparable (great vocal, fun beat, radio/remix friendly) I see a fun winter time video and feeling overall.
6.Ribbon. I think this could get a lot of play on urban radio (like lady gaga has managed to do this year.) Remix would be nice too- get a couple versions out there.
In other record breaking news, a female artist set a new record by having no fewer than NINE songs on Billboard's Hot 100 chart this week. Who is it? Hint - I seem to recall a few JUBber saying nobody had ever heard of her when she showed up in the news a couple months back...
I saw MiMi on Larry King Wed night..She seems like she's in another world..Maybe that's just who she is as far as "personality" goes...
MiMi's vocal chords declined in the late 90's around the time of the "Fantasy" album...Her "Whistle Notes" are still a force to be reckoned with..Only a couple of R&B singers can take her down whistle note for whistle note...
I think Mariah has 14 #1 Pop hits...Only a Die-Hard fan knows the accurate number...
As a "die-hard" fan, I'll be the first to admit that Mariah's vocals aren't what they were in the early '90s but trust me, all is not lost. I've got all of her cds and the woman still makes great music. Her current cd is a prime example. There are some really great songs on there. She still has chops! Maybe they're not quite as awesome as back in the day but seriously, Mariah can still sing. Check out the new cd if you want proof. And btw MisterMajestic, it's 18 #1's.

I only know 4 of her songs, and one of them isn't even hers alone. Having 6 new songs debut on the chart at once doesn't seem right to me. Something fishy about that, like it's against the rules somehow.

They reissued her last album with bonus tracks, and those bonus tracks are the ones that entered the chart. Against the rules? No, more of just an anomaly. You may have read in that Billboard piece that the Beatles once had 14 songs in the Hot 100. And it was sort of the same idea. Before they hit it big in America with "I Want to Hold Your Hand", there had been a couple other singles that were either licensed to other labels that went nowhere, or that Capitol simply didn't think were good enough to put out in the American market. Once "I Want to Hold Your Hand" became a smash, Capitol rush-released all those singles that they hadn't before...and all those other labels repressed those Beatles singles that had failed before. Suddenly, if a standard person wandered into a local record store, idly wondering if maybe the Beatles have a new single...they instead found twenty.
It just means the rules aren't always fair. Hell, Mariah did plenty of rule bending. The "CD single dump bin" was a Sony records innovation, and Mariah was probably the best beneficiary. Remember those little displays of CD singles they had at the counter of record stores? Sony would send those full of (Mariah) singles to the store, either for free or for 20 cents a single. Stores would price them at $1.99, they'd sell out, and Mariah would get another number one.
Does this "take the shine" off of Mariah's accomplishment? Only if you want it to, I guess.
>>>People are too preoccupied with record sales and winning this and being the best. Does it matter? Why does everything have to be a contest? Shouldn't the music be at the top of the list?
Yes, it matters. Much more than the music, in some ways.
I've discussed this elsewhere, so I'll try to be brief. There comes a spot where one stops being a fan of the music and becomes a fan of the artist. And I don't mean "I like a lot of this artist's music" - everybody does that, I think. Instead, it's like picking a sports team to cheer for. More than cheer for, in fact - think of those people who paint their chests team colors. That sort of fan. They no longer are simply hoping their team does well. They're tying their wagon to that star. The team's victories become their victories, and the team's setbacks become their setbacks. And so it is with certain musical artists. Especially the "Name Brands" - the Mariahs, the Whitneys, the Britneys. Their victories are their fan's victories. "Whitney sold a million copies of her album - in your face, bitch." It's not that different from "touchdown, 49ers - suck on that." For these people, it's NOT just about the music - it's literally tied up with sense of self.
And it's actually safer to do with a musician than a team. If your team gets trounced by the worst team in the league, it's hard to spin that in your favor. Your team sucked, period. You can lamely try to blame it on the refs (a common gambit) or the coach (rare), but basically, you're gonna have to accept it. But if an album doesn't sell well...well, it doesn't have to be the artist's fault. The record company isn't promoting it well. They picked the wrong track as the single. The public is too today-minded, and they can't appreciate the classic sound...or they're too stuck in the past and they can't appreciate the new sound. And with the internet, it's easy as anything to find favorable reviews and glowing testimonials. So, in music terms, it's like that 31-7 drubbing was actually a victory. You just have to squint your eyes and look at it correctly.
I'm trying to think if I ever subscribed to this. I don't think I did. Oh, I've had my favorite artists, and I've wanted them to do well. I've always been a Prince fan. But I remember buying the Lovesexy LP, and driving home in an excited state, ready to fall in love with the latest installment. And I remember listening to it...and coming to the conclusion that it simply wasn't that good. (I've since revised my opinion. I no longer think it's "simply not that good". I think it kinda sucks.) I didn't rush to tell my friends about it, or insist they go buy it, or quote Billboard data. (And I could've - I was quite the chart watcher.) I just put it back in the rack, pulled out Sign o the Times again, and reminded myself why I liked him in the first place.
Nowadays, most of my favorite artists barely make a dent. My favorite album so far this year managed to get to number 51 on the album chart, and one of the singles barely managed to make the top 40 on the modern rock chart, and didn't even make the dance chart (despite the dance-worthy nature of the track).
So...what? Did the album bomb? A failure? No. Yeah, I think the album is amazing, and I think a lot of people would like it who never got a chance to hear it. But that doesn't make the album a failure. These artists operate on a different plane from Mariah and Britney et al. (Not a better one - just a different one.) Their sales are tallied in hundreds and thousands, not millions. The fact that it charted at all is something of a minor miracle, and that means it did well enough that the band will probably stay together and record a second album. And to me and the rest of their fans, that's all that really matters.
I know the statement was not that funny, but I think that my personal experience with fanatics made this funnier. At this point, Rihanna and Beyonce fans are the worst. I've almost gotten lynched for mentioning songs I did not like by them.
As usual Lex, you are correct with your assertions that you made in your post.

I don't know what the rules are or how it works, but it just seems there would be some qualifications for getting on the Hot 100. How do you dump 6 songs at once and all of them get on the chart? Taylor Swift is big right now, but she still has some healthy competition.
Mariah does have impressive stats. I think she needs to rebrand herself. She's done a great job over the years staying current but her formula is starting to get repetative. I would like to see her do something that alot of people wouldn't expect from her. Look at all the good press she's getting for "Precious" for toning down her look. If she would just incorporate that in her music I think she would be a sucess. Stoping making lame videos full of glamour shots in clothes that don't fit her. Make songs that people can sing along with.

It's complicated, but it mainly has to do with sales (both online downloads and physical CDs) and airplay on radio. The biggest hit was helped along by airplay, but the rest were pretty much done via sales.

I feel like that's what she has been doing for the most part. Most of her more recent singles people can sing to, Its Like That, We Belong Together, Shake It Off, Touch My Body, Obsessed. Upbeat, simple & catchy hooks. To me, that seems like a big difference from songs like the One Sweet Day's, Hero's, and My All's.
I don't know of any that are still singing. Shanice and Amel Larrieux are the only two who I can think of, and neither have the same control. Mariah can't sing like she used to, she is older, but she's still a great vocalist. I had my doubts, especially with pretty much all of her E=MC2 performances, but all of her recent ones have been great (except for Obsessed).
Shanice is another Awesome singer and she doesnt have to lip-sync over her own pre-recorded vocals like Mariah does...You ever heard of Rachell Farrell? Rachell is another R&b/Jazz/Pop artist that can sing Baritone, Alto & Soprano and she can hit & sustain powerful Whistle notes...She'd "Murder" MiMi on any stage with a LIVE Mic...
Mariah's been using "whisper-vocals" for well over a decade now...Very rare that an artist loses the "grit" in his vocals at the age of 30...MiMi's not even 40 yet and her "Vocal prime" should be late 40's to early 50's...I wonder what she's gonna sound like when she hits 50?
Patti LaBelle is still throwing down at the age of 65...These young women need to get it together...
