Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

The album is mediocre at best.

....and that's ok that you feel that way. But the same can be said for just about every other album that WAS nominated. Mostly mediocre material. Nothing "special" Regardless of your opinion, at the very least Whitney's album had more SUCCESS than many of the albums which the voter's nominated. WORLDWIDE SUCCESS, at that. Not just success in the U.S. And regardless of what YOU think of the album, it was still critically acclaimed by most critics/reviews. It got MOSTLY solid/positive reviews and great high ratings all across the board. MOST reviews were hailing it as a great comeback effort for Whitney, with solid contemporary songs on it. The album was critically acclaimed. More so than some of the albums CHOSEN to be nominated. Simply ridiculous. And like what the guy from Billboard said, it was a shocking UNEXPECTED misstep. Hence the "shock" from so many people....

Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

We get that you are a Whitney stan, but the album, particularly for the major comeback that we had been hearing about for years, just wasn't as good as it could have been. Most reviews for the album were decent, but there are very few flat out raves for it. Again, there were no hits from it at all, and while the nominated albums certainly are nothing to write home to mother about, at least they somehow made an impact on the music scene this year.

It's great that Whitney has enjoyed some success with this album (that is where the marketing campaign did pay off), but the truth is, she just isn't as relevant to the music scene as she once was.

Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

but the truth is, she just isn't as relevant to the music scene as she once was.

Sales of her new album prove otherwise, frankly. Still relevant when she can STILL move units in large numbers like she has with her latest album and manage to be in the top 3 albums by a female -- U.S. and worldwide. Trumping most of the young "hot" and "relevant" artists.

....and of course she isn't "as" relevant to the music scene as she ONCE was. What artist who has been in the game 20+ years is??? She's past her peak, that's a no-brainer. But how many artists have yet to pass HER peak? Right. ..|

And just for the record, "Million Dollar Bill" was a #1 club hit. And is on its way to #1 on the R&B charts (currently sitting pretty at #2, behind Maxwell). A hit. ..|

Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

whitney should not have been snubbed like that. DIRTY! She had sooo much positive HYPE for her comeback, great reviews and great sales but still NO nominations? At all?? The hailed comeback of the year and NO nominations?? OUTRAGEOUS!!

Agree agree AGREE! Her album debuted at number1 and was the biggest debut by a female all year at the time. It sold very very well and Million dollar bill may not have been a HUGE instant hit but it was definately a minor hit but a hit nonetheless and its still doing well on the charts and rising and gaining audience impressions!!

Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

and people were predicting whitney would FLOP before her album even came out and now she has the number 3rd highest album by a female WORLDWIDE. Proved the haters wrong. her album definitely deserved to be nominated with some awards. But it just proves how screwed up the awards are!!

Hey...you wanted excuses as to why Whitney didn't get any Grammy nominations, and I am giving some to you. You don't have to agree with them, but to keep repeating the thing about her album sales isn't changing any minds.

Bottom line is: Obviously NARAS wasn't feeling her new material and didn't buy into her comeback.

Whitney Houston's Grammy Snub Irks Producers, Friends

by Mariel Concepcion, N.Y. | December 04, 2009 12:57 EST

Whitney Houston's comeback album, "I Look To You," may have debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, but it wasn't enough of a feat to garner a single Grammy nod this year. In a surprising omission, Houston received no nominations at this week's Grammy Nominations Concert Live! for the highly-rated album, her fourth No. 1 set that has already sold more than 305,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Producer Danja, who helmed two tracks for "I Look to You" -- "For The Lovers" and "Nothin' But Love" -- feels let down by the Grammy snub. "I'm a little disappointed because she put together a classic album. Her overall comeback is something to be noted but I'm a believer that great people and great music will always show its head," he told Billboard.com.

In spite of the Houston disappointment, Danja, who worked on Pink and Keri Hilson's albums -- both multiple nominees -- is excited about being acknowledged for those projects this year. "It's always a pleasant surprise to receive a nomination. Of course we want to win, but being recognized is plenty after all the hard work we put into producing great music," he says. "Both Keri and Pink are two very special projects to me and I'm excited for them both."

Pink is in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album categories for her "Sober" single and "Funhouse" album, respectively. Hilson got voted for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("Knock You Down" featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo) and Best New Artist alongside Zac Brown Band, MGMT, Silversun Pickups and The Ting Tings.

Previous Grammy nominee Ledisi, who is up for "Best R&B Vocal Performance" for her latest single "Goin' Through Changes" and "Best R&B Album" for her 2009 album "Turn Me Loose," says she isn't surprised by Houston's lack of recognition. "I have learned after watching the Grammys for years and now being a participant to always expect the unexpected," the Bay-area singer told Billboard. "Just when you think you know who will be nominated or win, it turns out to be something else. I am just grateful Ms. Houston is back and singing. I have enjoyed her artistry for years."

As for her own nominations, Ledisi says it feels "Extraordinary! I made a lot of changes for 'Turn Me Loose,' my third major label release, and to be nominated for two Grammys is amazing. I am eternally grateful to NARAS for this acknowledgement once again, especially for 'Turn Me loose,' because it validates my choice to stretch out."

"I Look To You" marks Houston's best opening sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991 (her previous best opening week since that year came when 2002's "Just Whitney" bowed at No. 9 in the thick of the Christmas holiday shopping season with 205,000.) Singles "I Look To You" and "Million Dollar Bill" both reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Im glad people in the industry are SPEAKING OUT about this little stunt that the grammy voters pulled with whitney. Utterly rediculous....

Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

Grammy Reactions:

Following Whitney Houston’s omission from nominations for this year's Grammy Awards, the following are reactions from both Whitney's record label and industry news leader Billboard Magazine --

From The New York Times...

… "There are always some prominent names shut out. One of the more conspicuous this year was Whitney Houston, whose comeback album, "I Look to You" (Arista), was released on the last day of Grammy eligibility, Aug. 31. "Considering the level of critical acclaim the album received and the sales to date, one million in the U.S. and two million worldwide, we’re surprised," said Mika El-Baz, a spokeswoman for the label.

From The Christian Science Monitor...

"Despite the love directed at the industry's divas, there were some unexpected omissions, points out Billboard editorial director Bill Werde, who says he was surprised that Whitney Houston was overlooked. "The Grammy voters usually pay attention to the whole trajectory of a career," he says, adding that in this case, Houston's comeback album was not just good, but had a couple of what he considers great songs, as well as being a remarkable return for a major artist."

Billboard Grammy Poll Results:

Billboard.com also commented about Whitney Houston's missing Grammy nominations when it reported the results of its Grammy nominations reader poll. In the poll, Whitney received 865 votes for Album of The Year, making the top 5 list of those eligible to be nominated, even though her album had to be written in as a suggestion to even be included in the poll. When it reported the poll results, Billboard wrote: "Just like Billboard.com readers, we thought Whitney Houston was a shoe-in for multiple Grammy nominations for her much-heralded -- and much-loved -- return to music 'I Look To You.' Instead, the Grammy voters delivered what may be the greatest snub of all."

pumkin,

did we have a relapse last night. are you in crisis? someone call the state of maryland department of social services.

take a deep breath, step away from the keyboard you'll be ok. whitney will be fine. she pays people for that.

the christian science monitor? really? really?

of course her label and billboard will support her by those statements. you forget the music industry as a whole has a vested interest for ms. houston to sell and succeed. not for ms. houston's sake but for the business of selling, making $$$.
i'll scratch your back kinda thing if you scratch mine.

Re: Excuses why Whitney Houston didn't get Grammy nominations?

Totally AGREE with what the producer said about Whitney and the snub. Its a sad shame, really. Even billboard said it was SURPRISING. Everyone just knew Whitney was going to get some noms. Them snubbing her is crazy and wrong.

Glad to see the bandages aren't preventing you from typing.

DUH!!! Of course her producers, friends and Billboard are going to come to her defense. Don't you always come to Whitney's defense and you're a nobody in her life?
Don't you always come to SexyKev's defense and you're just a "friend" on jub.

pumkin,

the christian science monitor? really? really?

They simply RE-HASHED an article that was already published by another source. Like all media outlets do. The quote/story didn't originate from them, though. The words come from the people at Billboard. They're heavyweights in the industry and I'm glad they're speaking out for Whitney. Sharing the same sentiments as all the people who have some good sense about the situation. ..|

Re: New Whitney Album On Sale Today!

^ Me too. I've read a number of articles that stated it was a "shocking" unexpected thing that Whitney didn't get any nominations after her VERY SUCCESSFUL, critically acclaimed, highly rated album and return to music. But Whitney is still proving the haters wrong. She already DEBUTED at #1 with a great strong number, has one of the top 3 best selling albums of the year worldwide, MDB was a #1 club hit and is still doing well on the R&B chart, and her tour is selling out quickly. All WITHOUT the need of a damn Grammy nomination. ;)
