On-Topic The politics of eating out & Chick-fil-A

let's just all agree ......

Fresh & Easy is THE BEST GROCERY ......... despite its imminent bankruptcy

and California, is THE BEST STATE ...... despite its imminent bankruptcy

there - it's settled

Trader Joes has great frozen Indian food - I know I know - chicken tikki masala - great for a quick and delicious different frozen dinner

I do want to go to TJ's soon. Do they have a meats, produce, and pre-cooked dinners? Sometimes I like to go to Fresh Market and just buy a meal they've cooked...better than restaurants when I'm lazy.

they have meats and produce - i buy both but more the latter
they have frozen meals but not unfrozen like at whole foods - bit of a bummer but for me, other than buying mini veal meatballs (great with a salad) or a rare veggie or meat lasagna (only once in a blue moon) it's not a loss

TJ has great prices for staples

Can you crank out the Lee Greenwood song right about now.

I love America! ALL of America. Every region has it's positives & negatives, but we're one big country. I have loved every region I've visited. I was convinced I would hate NYC and when I got there, I loved it. That was probably the only place where I had some ill-advised, pre-conceived negative notion. In a perfect world (if I had enough money) I would live in Maine in the fall, Oregon in the summer, St Pete FL in the winter, and E Tennessee in the spring. I would have to mix in a heavy dose of Vermont, Charleston, SC, Monterrey/San Fran and Colorado, too. I like everywhere (although Kansas and Nebraska were kinda boring...and lonely).

That said, I've never heard a company use the excuse, "you lack transparency in govt ethics" as a reason not to come here. All that bidding transparency does come at a cost. Compliance is not free to tax payers. EPA based upcharges alone hurt some states at a much greater price than ethics. Good govt regulations are not bad, but they're not free either. We just had a state election with the non-binding question, "Should GA limit lobbyists gifts to $50?" I voted no....we can't micro-manage everything at the state capitol. Govt officials do operate as a business. I don't expect a lobbyist to take out some DOT officials to dinner at Wendy's.

Chance... spewing nonsense. What imminent bankruptcy? Not happening in California. Asides from that most Southern states are already bankrupt. Just close some of the tax loop holes, and California will be better off. By the way, I actually said Trader Joes is my personal favorite, not Fresh and Easy.... but nice story chance. This is why I got the guy on ignore.

Trader Joe's does great with its Asian selection... great dumplings. And it's really not that expensive. On another note, Asian supermarkets are another big thing here in California...

:: Galleria Market ::

This one is in Northridge... not a place I go to often... but it has a big store, a food court and some other shops... like a mini-mall. Food court serves up amazing Korean food.

They have a few other locations in LA... to serve the large Korean community in Los Angeles.

3 california cities have filed for bankruptcy in the past 2 1/2 months - stockton, mammoth lakes and most recently san bernadino

"unfunded city employee pension and benefits liabilities" appears to be the primary reason

just the tip of the iceberg it appears

not sure "taxing the wealthy" is gonna fix that but good luck

as for trader joes being your fav, i missed that - did anyone else catch that in your california rocks/sammie is a crazy republican rants?

I missed it

trader joes has great cheese too :)

Mini-veal meatballs sounds tasty. I might have to see if Fresh Market has those. The nearest TJ's is 100 miles or so away. Shopping these gourmet stores is not easy on the budget but more fun than Kroger or Publix.

Hey, to change the subject from food, here is a study by 'liberal' NBC regarding ranking the 50 states on Attracting Business. They use alot of criteria (10 factors, I believe) and rank the states on the criteria to get a final average. For example, the top states are VA, NC, CO, TX and GA (#4). Someone may have mentioned California earlier (it's #32). Criteria examples such as:

COST OF BUSINESS -- Ga--#18 (Cali was #47)
BUSINESS FRIENDLINESS-- Ga -- #16 (Cali was #50...Ouch!)
COST OF LIVING -- GA --#9 (Cali was #48). Good thing the cost of living is not important to new industry.

Read up and see how ur state does.

Ur better than Rachel Maddow's fact checker. And ya know, I have been called 'Crazy" alot of times, but rarely have I been called a Republican, much less a crazy Republican. In my neck of the woods, people act like I'm to the left of Al Sharpton. Only on JUB am I to the right of Sarah Palin

CNBC America's Top States for Business 2012 rates all 50 states, California is 40th, Texas is 1st.

CNNMoney: Most, least friendly states for small business California is 4th worst, Texas is 2nd best.

Any Google search on best states for business and/or worst states for business will produce similar results by the hundreds.

Don't believe it! It's a vast right wing internet conspiracy. That's what it is...don't believe a word. Google has an agenda...as does CNBC and CNN.

quit watching The Dukes of Hazzard.
That does it, Sammie, we're finished. I will never, so long as I draw breath, stop watching The Dukes of Hazzard!

I don't know, I think corruption is part of the South's charm. That old corrupt governor in O Brother, Where Art Thou is my favorite character! He actually has my dream job. In real life, I've got a soft spot for anyone who attacked FDR from the left, hence my love for Huey Long.

More chest beating from yet another Log Cabin type... Cost of Living? What about quality of living? That's where Georgia fails miserably. People get paid more in this state on average. Open your eyes a bit.

Got him there quality of living is pretty good in California at 20th (out of 50 states) if you can afford it, cost of living is 46th. ibid CNBC

i think this covers it

Those "studies" are entirely subjective and are not representative of reality. And besides that, Texas... seriously...? Texas has one of the worst educational systems in the entire country... it's a disaster... it's highly polluted too. Makes LA look real clean.

Here is a number for some of you... $1.9 trillion. Repeat that one a few times. Figure out what I am referring to. California is still the economic powerhouse of this country and no southern state even comes close. Not even Texas. Oh and Texas could become a democrat leaning state soon enough.

Look at California 20 years ago... republicans had it under control... and then it changed. Same thing will happen to Texas.

In education California rated in at 33rd, Texas at 26th. California Republicans are rather like Texas Democrats, in any other state they would be considered part of the the other party.

Geez, Zingy, I know it bruised your pride when a certain JUB poster once called you out for being a Republican ("who the hell are you? i've never seen you post on here" LOL), but I'm actually detecting a bit of a Socialist-lean in the folks you mentioned. Boss Hogg and The Kingfish, Huey Long. Socialist! Although, I guess Boss Hogg was more dictatorial since he never re-distributed the wealth. And mechanic Cooter Davenport became a Dem US Rep in GA (he now owns a Dukes musuem in TN). Long...can you believe a Louisianan could out-left a New Yorker? He wanted all the wealthy Americans during the Depression to give up their money to re-distribute among the rest of the people.

All that said, since almost all of The Dukes of Hazzard episodes were filmed in Hollywood, I guess it's appropriate that a fringe socialist like you should watch it (most of the best things in the world come from LA...did u know that?):D

PolitiFact | Democrats say Texas graduation rate fell to 50th under Rick Perry

Texas ranks consistently DEAD LAST in education. The democrats exaggerate Perry's negative effective on education... the system was already a mess!

Sorry stardreamer... you gotta stop relying on erroneous numbers.

It seems to rate dead last in high school graduation rates which while a factor does not paint the whole picture of quality of education. The article goes in pretty good detail on the problems in Texas relating to this factor and they have more to do with the demographics of the population than they do with the education system itself. We could go more into the demographics if you wish but that would just start Benviliio salivating on his favorite subject.

I would certainly hope with a population like California that it would be one of the biggest economies in the world. That's just a sheer result of people...square miles...weather...ocean. In the late '80's, it was the #6 economy in the world...so it's dropped some.

Log Cabin...that is hilarious...knew one once, he bowed to the feet of Dan Quayle...not cool! Another first, being called a LCR.

The CNBC data is major crunching...it's not subjective like the stuff you keep screaming. And I don't disagree with GA's ranking. Our economy at #35 (hello...housing boom/bust), and quality of life (#38)...have you ever spent the summer here...it's hot and humid...I'd rank Ga #50 on QOL. The 'snobs' of Harvard, Yale and other think tanks never grade southern states high on QOL. It's always been that way. We are lacking in the arts and we spend less money on public parks and recreation. It's a fact that I do not dispute. The upside is you get to keep more of your money. You notice places like GA and TX did do well with infra-structure. We love us some asphalt.

It still ranks about the 8th or 9th largest economy, but India and China have been emerging fast. Not so sure about India any more though. California has surpassed Spain... and I think even Mexico.

And yeah, it's alll subjective. Georgia is a horrible place to live. I've visited there. Absolutely horrible place. I'll never go there again. I don't understand how my uncle works there. I guess it's just his job. He might go to Connecticut now. Georgia is not a state I'll ever visit again, and Atlanta is a HORRIBLE city.

you can't make this shit up - it's like a foreign movie being intentionally translated incorrectly ;)

you haven't responded to the 3 CITIES IN CALIFORNIA WENT BANKRUPT in the past 2 1/2 mos.

we'll wait ........ probably forever

Atlanta is called "The City To Busy to Hate...." So, yeah...it wouldn't be a good fit for you.
