It's a tragic story in a way. Camilla was the only woman he ever wanted to marry, but when it was marrying time for him, neither the rest of the family nor the Church of England (ironically) could accept him marrying a divorced woman.
That's a bit mixed up. The family maybe but not the church was against Charles marrying Camilla in the first place. Second time around, after they were both divorced (and Diana was dead), the church was against (in a bland Church of England sort of way) Charles marrying a divorcee , but the family (particularly following the death of the Queen Mother in 2002) was generally accepting of it.
